FILE- This is a May 24, 2009 file photo of Britain's Got Talent star Susan Boyle It's always a bad hair day for Susan Boyle until she starts to sing. The Scottish songbird with the frizzed-out hair doesn't look like a star. She is a bit chubby, with plain features, and no thousand watt show biz smile. But her golden voice has made her the overwhelming favorite in Britain's Got Talent finals on Saturday May 30. 2009. (AP Photo/Andrew Milligan/PA)

LONDON — Singer Susan Boyle was being treated for exhaustion at a mental health clinic Monday after taking second place in a TV talent competition that turned the humble church volunteer into a global star, the show's producers and a newspaper said.

Boyle was admitted to London's Priory Clinic on Sunday, a day after she finished behind a male dance group on the show "Britain's Got Talent," the Sun newspaper reported.

"Nobody has had to put up with the kind of attention Susan has had. Nobody could have predicted it," one of the show's judges, Piers Morgan, told breakfast TV show GMTV. "It has been crazy, she has gone from anonymity to being the most downloaded woman in history."

Boyle was favored to win the show's finals _ watched by more than 19 million people _ after a clip from her first appearance became the fifth most-watched in YouTube history, viewed more than 220 million times.

The discovery that a woman from a small Scottish town was capable of singing very well on a national stage turned Boyle into a modern-day Cinderella. On Oprah Winfrey's U.S. television show, the singer had said she was "loving every second" of her unexpected stardom.

But much of the media storm surrounding her debut was laced with snide commentary about her looks, her social awkwardness and her remark that she had never been kissed.

Scotland's First Minister Alex Salmond was scathing about the media pressure, saying there were "elements of a press who like nothing better than to build people up and then drag them down."

By Friday, the pressure appeared to be building on the shy singer, who reportedly went into seclusion after exploding at journalists from Britain's notoriously aggressive tabloids.

Television company TalkbackThames on Monday said Boyle was "exhausted and emotionally drained" and was taking a few days off.

"She has been seen by her private GP (doctor), who supports her decision to take a few days out for rest and recovery," the company said.

London police would not confirm the report that Boyle was admitted to a clinic, but said doctors were called to assist a woman under the Mental Health Act, and the woman went voluntarily to a clinic.

The Priory _ one of a chain of clinics known for treating celebrities including fashion model Kate Moss and musician Pete Doherty _ offers treatment for a range of psychiatric problems as well as drug and alcohol addiction.

Boyle had looked tense and uncomfortable after giving a strong final performance Saturday night with "I Dreamed a Dream" from Les Miserables _ the same song she chose for her April debut.

When Diversity was announced as the winner, she looked relieved and relaxed. Smiling broadly, she said the best act had won and wished the dance group all the best.

Boyle drew 20.2 percent of the 4 million votes cast in the final, behind Diversity's 24.9 percent.

Susan Boyle not winning was an outrage! Imagine, finishing second to a non-singing dance troupe but hang in there Susan! I predict in 6 months no one will even remember the name of that dance group ( I wish them well, but I'm just saying.) Susan Boyle, on the other hand, will take her place among the truly great singing superstars! Come to America, we know how to treat a lady such as yourself. Move over Diana Ross and Barbra Streisand, there's a new Diva in the house!

It is NOT an outrage.
It was a 'variety' show competition and the PUBLIC picked the winner.
Boyle is a 'one song wonder' and not in the same league with superstars like Ross and Streisand.

Sorry, it was not picked by the public. Whoever can buy the most calls picks the winner. The biggest winners were the bookmakers. If Boyle had won, it's estimated they would have lost 5 million pounds (around $8 million)as her odds were almost even.. As it was, they made hundreds of thousands on Diversity, whose odds were only 16 to 1. People in both Scotland and England said they couldn't vote for Susan because the lines were busy for all or part of the entire hour. A weak contestant's votes can be increased by autodialing; a strong one's reduced by jamming the lines.

This year's contest is not an isolated example; a similar "upset" happened last year, and has happened on other talent shows as well. The loser here is not Susan Boyle, who has already has many contract oppotunities, but rather all the folks who bet on her and lost.

wow...talk about DELUSIONAL...

and you seem to take it so personally...hence the problem....it's not an outrage...and what do you mean 'finishing second to a non-singing dance troupe'??...it's not a SINGING contest...it's for ALL talent...Diversity was SENSATIONAL...

move over Diana and Barbra??...what a sad statement...

"Diva"!? No. No. No. Susan Boyle may be a nice lady, but she's not a "diva".

Cher is a diva. Madonna is a diva. Barbra is a diva. Even Dalida (was) a diva.

I am hoping Piers Morgan or the show itself is paying for Ms. Boyle's stay at the Priory Clinic. It's a beautiful place and perfect for her well-deserved rest but it's unbelievably expensive. I just wish her well and hope she finds peace in whatever she decides to do. She gave us all a great performance and a glimpse into her life. The shame of it all is that she dedicated her life to her parents and, only when they were gone, did she dare to carve out a career. She was very courageous and can be again, if she accepts the advice of her doctors. Peace to her!

Susan, I know how you feel. I just went through something similar. It's like you're a wrestler and you get lifted high off the mat and then thrown down on it. I used to be able to pick myself up and dust myself off. But every time you get thrown down it gets harder to get back up. I pray for you, know how you feel, and please know you are still a huge inspiration to fans across the globe everywhere.

No. No. No. Bush wasn't that capable. He still hasn't translated the question "Is our children learning?" accordingly.

Having to check into a clinic BEFORE you release your first album is the mark of a future star.

Am I the only one who wonders at the statistical probability of any one group over coming the fan base of Susan Boyle?

Unless there was a backlash against Boyle in Britain, perhaps the rumored Crabs in a Bucket working class mentality that resents anyone getting 'outside their station,' I would think the large fan base would have given her an edge.

Given that there were nine other very strong groups, what are the odds from a mathematical approach, of any one group rising about her?

Am I the only one to wonder that the bookies were the ones who had a stake in her failure?
Am I the only one that wonders about the interested that bookies had in her failure? If bookies, including organized crime backing illegal gambling, stood to loose millions, they would have the motive to fix the results, to hack the voting.

If the pentagon can be hacked, one has to think BGT's voting could have been hacked.

I don't see what all the complaining is about. This woman went from an absolute nobody to finishing second in one of the most popular shows in Britain. Sure, she made the show a hit worldwide, but I don't see how that guarantees her victory. The voting wasn't even close, really. I think she's a fantastic singer, but she's got some work ahead of her if she really wants a career in the business. I'm proud of her. She certainly brought tears to my eyes with her opening performance.

People: Entertainment is about distracting the masses. Personalities, performances and circumstances are staged (fake) for your entertainment pleasure.

You have no ability to discern whether Susan Boyle, Brad Pitt, or anyone else is lovely, nice or anything else that takes a personal relationship to discern. Take it for what it is, entertainment designed to motivate you to give your money to them, nothing more, nothing less.

Often, the "losers" go on to better careers than the "winners" do on these contrivances.

All Brits hearing this news will take it as conclusive proof that Susan Boyle has MADE IT BIG TIME. You are NOBODY in the UK unless you've been 'admitted to the Ivy'. Past celebrity xxxxups include Kate Moss and Amy Winehouse no less!!! She may have come second to a bunch of Dickensian street urchins and their amusing gyrations but todays news shows that she, SUSAN is the being destined for the celebrity stratosphere!!!

I think history has shown that those who come in second on these things do exceptionally well. The "winner" has extensive contractual obligations - which might not have fit Ms. Boyle's temperament or experience - but now, with this wind at her back, she is free to explore whatever suits her.

I see the possibility of a career like Marnie Nixon's.

Good Luck to Ms. Boyle. Ms. Boyle could not have stood up under the pressure of fame. Her talent will still keep her in demand, I hope.
