UPDATE: A Saudi government spokesman tells Ben Smith that the White House warning about journalist restrictions in Saudi Arabia is "inaccurate."

"Journalists are free to go wherever and report on whatever they want," emails Karen Hanretty of Qorvis Communications, the American PR firm that the Saudi government uses.

TIME's Michael Scherer, who will be accompanying President Obama on his trip to Saudi Arabia Tuesday, reports that he has been warned by the U.S. State Department that, while in Saudi Arabia, he is not to report on anything except the President's visit lest he "risk arrest and detention by Saudi authorities."

Scherer writes that "by agreement between the Obama Administration and the Saudi government, the White House press corps will be severely restricted while in the country," and he shared with readers the instructions sent to him by the State Department:

The Saudi government is permitting journalists accompanying President Obama entry into the country without a visa or the usual customs procedures. While in Saudi Arabia, therefore, journalists are expressly prohibited from leaving the hotel or engaging in any journalistic activities outside of coverage of the POTUS visit. Those who do so risk arrest and detention by Saudi authorities.

In February, the State Department's 2008 Human Rights Report on Saudi Arabia discussed at length limitations on freedom of the press in that country:

The Basic Law does not provide for freedom of speech or the press, and the government generally did not respect these rights in practice. Several major media outlets were owned by members of the royal family, and individuals were not permitted to criticize the royal family publicly. The government actively impeded criticism and monitored citizens' political activity. In rare cases, individuals criticized specific government bodies or actions publicly without repercussions.

According to the Basic Law, the media's role is to educate the masses and promote national unity. Media outlets can legally be banned or publication temporarily halted if they are deemed to promote "mischief and discord, compromise the security of the state and its public image," or if it "offends a man's dignity and rights." The government continued to restrict freedom of speech and press by interrupting publication and dissemination of news sources critical of the royal family or of Islam. Authorities prevented or delayed distribution of foreign print media, effectively censoring these media and publications. During the year media discussions took place that tested the boundaries of permissible topics for media coverage, including political and social reforms, actions of government ministries, domestic and child abuse, rights of women and human rights, corruption, drug and alcohol abuse, crime rates and violence, trafficking in persons, HIV/AIDS, and the religious police.

I lived in Sudan for a year. People who worked at the embassy in Saudi Arabia were not happy that the Saudis wanted to control what the women were doing, even within embassy grounds, such as swimming in a bathing suit. When we stop being obesiant to the Saudis we will have regained our respect. The fact of how women are treated there is alone reason to suspend relations with them. Please, let us become energy-efficient.

How can we become energy effeicient when our govmnt stops businesses from pulling resources from the ground, taxes energy producers out of business and changes regulations so quickly that no business wants to build plants/refineries because the millions they pay to meet regulations will have to be paid again before the construction is done. Write your representatives and tell them you want your energy from local sources. Otherwise, you are part of the problem.

Perfect, Obama is going to Saudi Arabia to discuss whether they are an ally, and the Saudis restrict our journalists. Granted, calling some of them journalists is giving them way too much respect, but they do have press credentials, and Saudis press are permitted to roam the U. S. and ask questions of anyone and everyone. We may be losing freedoms and need to slug it out with the top one percent to get back a functioning Republic, but we are still way ahead of the Saudis.

Time's reporter, Michael Scherer should do research before he travels abroad without a VISA and
ends up in jail.

Many countries require Visas.
Press credentials are not Visas.
Before traveling to Russia, my husband and I did the necessary paperwork to get our
Visas. And yes, you can be stopped at anytime and be asked to
show both your passport and Visa. If you have only your passport, you are detained
and immediately sent out of the country.

While we may not like or agree with such restrictions, we are required to
honor them.

Perhaps, Mr. Scherer should only cover our POTUS here in the USA.
I imagine his Time magazine article has now put him on a Watch List.
Silly man.

"Tell that to the African-Americans on this blog.....They think Arab muslims are wonderful."

I can't speak for all black people but I can say that some black people don't think all Arabs are wonderful. Some of us know that Arabs were the first slavers of Afrikan people. They were as brutal as the European were slavers. Black people were also enslaved by Joos too. Some black people aren't fooled by Jooish propaganda and are not falling for all the drama. However, some blacks move with caution dealing with Arabs. Not because of US policy, but because of our own historical references. The white man's friend or e-n-e-m-y is not always black peoples friend or e-n-e-m-y.

Your probably right. Look at Sudan. The exploiters are the Pseudo-Arabs that feel that they can rape and kill with impunity the black population in the country.

Jooos never dealt with African's slavery. You might find one or two Jews in that chain of business but it is rather show that Jooos didn't take part in that machinery. The main slavery dealers were Arabs and South America Spaniards.

Hopefully the U.S. Journalists will get some "class" and stop "the misspeak" done by most of them - not all of course. Other countries certainly notice a difference and are fast learning which network speaks truth and which are just gossip mongers. The Saudis are not barring them.

So, if they can't live by their rules, then stay home. we don't want our journalists arrested and held in Saudi prisons. They are not a free nation, never have been and never will be.

I concur. Definitely not a free nation.

The inhuman, medieval treatment of their women disgusts me. Such a primitive way of life they live there. Every time I turn around there is another news article on some human rights admonition there. It's a shame they have oil we want because I wish we would shun them. I cringe every time we kiss their feet.

Saudi Arabia isn't a nation. it's Arabian property that is owned by the Saudi family. They own it like Marlon Brando owns that island. They stole it fair and square

What we have here is a case of diplomatic doubletalk, where journalists are free to do whatever they want as long as they don't actually do anything.

Well isn't that nice, from a country that didn't make slavery illegal until 1962. Many of the slaves were kidnapped African Muslims who had made their pilgrimage to mecca.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The cultural setting is A rab and Mu slim. To preserve the country’s purist religious position, many proscriptions of behaviour and dress are enforced. Alcoholic beverages are prohibited, for example, and there is no theatre or public exhibition of films. Educated Saudis are well informed on issues of the Arab world, the M uslim world, and the world at large, but public expression of opinion about domestic matters is not encouraged.

Saudi Arabia is a right-wing theocracy. Bush, Palin, Huckabee would be right at home. It's what they want for the USA.
Obama? Not so much. He'll do us proud though, as always.

Exactly. The journalists can abide by the rules, or not go. It is a choice. Maybe not a choice they like, or they may even feel entitled to know all and report all............But it still is a choice.
