Dick Cheney's recent and ongoing media blitz has been defined not just by the fervor with which he has defended his approach to national security affairs but also the extent to which he is willing to pin blame on others.

On Monday, the former vice president took to the National Press Club to discuss, once more, the policies he helped push and oversee while in office. Insisting that the Bush White House did everything it could to keep the American public safe, he placed responsibility for their most glaring failure on the counter-terrorism czar.

"Richard Clarke was the head of the counter-terrorism program in the run up to 9/11," Cheney declared. "He obviously missed it."

It was about as harsh an attack as the former vice president could muster -- blaming the death of 3,000 Americans on a single person. It is also deeply debatable. There is, of course, the August memo, handed to the president, which declared that al Qaeda was determined to attack the United States. Clarke himself wrote in his book that in the run-up to 9/11 he expressed deep concern over such an attack, but to no avail.

Reminded of this, Cheney replied, "That is not my recollection. But I haven't read his book."

There was the slightest of laughs from the audience.

It was not the only time Cheney threw a former colleague under the bus. Earlier in the event, the former vice president argued that the administration's suggestion of an operational link between al-Qaeda and Iraq was not driven by a neo-conservative fantasy, but by the CIA chief at the time.

"The prime source of information on the relationship between Iraq and al-Qaeda was George Tenet, who was the director of the Central Intelligence Agency and who testified, if you go back check the record, in the fall of '02 before the Senate Intelligence Committee in open session that there was a relationship, a collaborative relationship, an operational relationship," said Cheney, "that there was a relationship between al-Qaeda and Iraq that stretched back ten years. That is not something I made up, that is not something I thought of. That is what the director of central intelligence was telling us."

Cheney and others in the Bush administration have accused the former CIA director of producing the war's faulty rationales before. But by Tenet's own account, Cheney was running with intelligence that everyone knew to be far from concrete. Most contemporary reporting, moreover, suggests that it was the vice president's office who was applying pressure on the CIA to find a tie between al-Qaeda and Iraq.

In the end, the press club performance, like those that preceded it, showed Cheney at his most defensive and combative. There were, by his estimation, few if any mistakes made under his watch. And if there were mistakes, they were the responsibility of others. As for the current debate over the efficacy his national security policies, the critics, Cheney reasons, are either forgetful or ungrateful for the security with which they live.

"I don't have much tolerance or patience for those who suggest now with the benefit of hindsight eight years later, who have forgotten what in fact happened on 9/11," Cheney said. "It was the right thing to do. The threat is still out there."

Clarke did not return a request for comment.

Richard Clarke was shrieking as loud as he could about this the moment Condi walked in the door, and that is well documented. Cheney is at a new low especially when he brushed off Clarke's going public after 9/11 as sour grapes for having eventually fired the guy.

Dick Cheney knows that he is at the root of the Bush Administration's failures and the person who pushed policies that undermined the Constitution and broke US and international law. But he also knows that the best defense is a good offense. So he has made the decision to deflect from his own actions and blame others for his mistakes. The American people would be best served if the Obama Administration allowed an independent Justice investigation and prosecution of his crimes.

Cheyney would balme his OWN MOTHER for 9/11 if he was put on the spot.

I am waiting for the spontaneous combustion of Cheney's pants.

I'm also waiting to see him or Dubya leave the sanctuary of the USA and be charged with assorted war crimes by those who don't need to worry about getting bi-partisan support on bills in Congress. At this point, bi-partisanship has about the same credibility as Manny Ramirez or Alex Rodriguez.

Tell it to President Obama. If he become any more "bipartisan" he will turn into a Republican.

Unfortunately, I believe our constitution provides the Vice President with the same "absolute immunity" from criminal prosecution for official acts as it provides the President. That means the only constitutional means of prosecuting Bush or Cheney would have been to impeach them and remove them from office (they still would not have gone to jail) and it's now too late for that.

Fortunately, shooting Harry Whittington in the face was not an "official act," and is not immune from prosecution, even though the DA declined to prosecute at the time. When Mr. Wittington dies--be it tomorrow or ten years from now--if the doctors find that his demise was hastened by the buckshot that lodged in his heart (he already suffered a heart attack because of it), the cause of death will be homocide and a grand jury investigation will be automatically convened. That, sadly, is the best chance we have to see Mr. Cheney behind bars.

P.S. I am not a lawyer, so feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

This man (Cheney) knows no low . Sorry, but you, Bush and Condi are the real owners of 9-11. The largest attack on our soil happened on your watch and that Dick is your LEGACY.(oh and all the dead soldiers and civilians in Iraq----a war based on a LIE).

what does it matter they were both complicit in the cover-up. There was more money spent investigating Monica Lewinsky than for the 9/11 Commission. Everyone needs to read The 9/11 Commission Report: Omissions and Distortions which talks about how Philip D. Zelikow (co-author of book with Condoleezza Rice) was instrumental in creating the 9/11 Commission Report. How is it that he can be the non-bias executive director of the 9/11 Commission but be good friends with people in the government he is supposed to be investigating?

Richard Clarke was NOT complicit in that attack.

Phillip Zelikow cannot be trusted. He is a word and idea smith. He plants doubt and confusion.

Interesting. So often over the past 8 years or so we have heard C heney referred to as B ush's Puppeteer, the guy who pulled the strings, the "real" p resident.

Now, the "puppet" has cut the strings and gone off to quiet retirement and zipped his lip, and the puppeteer is all over the lot, waving the severed puppet strings in the air and, discovering that he can't make the puppet do what he wants (his dirty work) any more, he's simply shooting from the lip in nearly incoherent desperation.

Geppetto's puppet wanted to be a real boy, and he told lies and his nose grew long. Now Geppetto has has no puppet. How does a puppeteer put on a show without his puppet?

This could be rather entertaining in the short term.

Cheney is like any other republican, repeat the lie often enough and folks will believe you. Also, the media loves conflict and repubs know how to say things that's off the wall, stupid, mean spirited, etc. as long as it's controversial. The media goes with it 24/7 until the repubs say some else that stupid.
Cheney knows his reckoning day is coming, because he is knee deep in it. He's trying to get his story out, blame others, muddle the waters, etc.
