LOS ANGELES — A judge placed former "Columbo" star's Peter Falk in a conservatorship Monday to ensure his daughter could occasionally visit the ailing 81-year-old actor.

Falk's wife of more than 30 years, Shera, will remain in control of his personal care and affairs. Falk has advanced dementia, likely from Alzheimer's disease, one of his doctors testified Monday.

Catherine Falk petitioned in December to take over her father's affairs despite a sometimes contentious relationship with Falk and his wife. By court order, she will be allowed a 30-minute visit with her father every other month.

Falk's condition virtually ensures he will not remember the meetings, his doctor said.

The Emmy-winning actor slipped rapidly into dementia since a series of dental operations in late 2007, Dr. Stephen Read testified Monday, the final day of a two-day conservatorship hearing.

Read said it was unclear whether Falk's condition worsened as a result of anesthesia or some other reaction to the operation.

Read first evaluated Falk in June 2008 before the actor was scheduled to undergo hip surgery. His dementia and apparent Alzheimer's disease worsened after that procedure, and Read said the actor no longer remembers his signature role in the series "Columbo."

Falk won four Emmys for his starring role in "Columbo." He also received Academy Award nominations for movies in 1959 and 1960.

For months, he has lived in a guesthouse at his Beverly Hills home that has been converted into an art studio and living quarters. He has around-the-clock care, and Shera Falk testified that she cooks dinner for her husband nightly.

Falk in 2005 designated Shera Falk to be his caregiver and the keeper of his estate.

Catherine Falk, 38, withdrew a petition to take over control of the actor's finances, saying she was only concerned about visiting her father.

The hearing placed a spotlight on a series of slights within the family that led to the court action. Catherine Falk alleged Shera Falk ridiculed her father, slammed the door in her face and cut off contact with him when he grew ill.

Shera Falk testified that her husband thought his daughter was troublesome and that they were never close. Her attorney used the actor's personal diary to show how he regarded their relationship in the last decade.

Catherine Falk acknowledged during the hearing that a lawsuit she filed against her father drove a wedge between them, but that they had reconciled. She had sued her father to force him to pay her tuition and expenses while attending Syracuse University.

Her attorney used postcards and telegrams Falk sent to his daughter when she was a child to illustrate a closer relationship than the actor's wife was willing to admit.

As testimony bogged down Monday in a final series of accusations and rebuttals, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Aviva K. Bobb ordered attorneys for both sides into her chambers.

The attorneys then brokered a compromise in a courthouse hallway that would allow Catherine Falk visitations, but not entry into his inner sanctum. The visits will take place at the home of a friend who lives down the street from Peter and Shera Falk.

Shera Falk will not be allowed in the gatherings.

"We're thrilled with the result," said Troy Martin, Catherine Falk's attorney.

Shera Falk's attorney, Marshal Oldman, also claimed victory, saying the hearing proved that Falk's wife had provided top-notch care and should be allowed to continue that role. He said Falk's physical health is good.

"Essentially, this is a family matter," Oldman said, noting that Falk was a private man. "It's important that families can figure out how to get along. It's a good outcome for everybody."

Alzhemier's is so much common than people believe. My mom died of it. Falk has always been a terrific actor with no scandals in his life and seemed to be a good person too. According to what I know about the disease, a child of someone who's had Alzheimer's doesn't get it. The genetics or DNA of it hits further down the line. If that's not so, someone tell me ok.

My father endured much of the same affliction. It's so hard to see the person who was so strong their entire life reduced to needing to be fed and wiped. This is how we return the love they gave us, and is our responsibility. I sincerely hope Catherine realizes that.

This man achieved so much in his life, and deserved all the accolades he was given. One of those actors who is so natural you don't realize how talented they are.

Don't miss the medical story here: anesthesia is causing memory loss and a lot of dementia these days, especially among other people. The effect is almost immediate, within 24 hours of their waking up from anesthesia, and it continues to get worse with time.

My Dad had cataract surgery a couple of years ago, and is now showing very troubling signs of dementia which started right after his surgery. Although he still knows who is, he has serious trouble remembering anything, including the names of his grown children. I saw the same almost immediate effect of anesthesia on the mother of a co-worker after her surgery.

Check out the very disturbing effects of anesthesia on the brain following surgery before members of your family undergo any procedures. It's not talked about in the media, but you can find info on the internet about it.

I meant to say "especially among older people" -- not other people.

One more question before I go, .....It just hit me, and keeps rolling around in my head like a marble....

Falk is quite a character. I read that he worked on the Yugoslavian railroad in his youth.

Sad to hear about his dementia. I enjoyed his Colombo series.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if his wife would just let his daughter see him whenever she wanted. How difficult would that be? What harm? The past is the past. All we have is now, and Peter Falk apparently has precious little of that.

We humans have such a capacity to harm ourselves by harming others.

even though there is no cure for this condition, a stable routine does have a bennificial effect. And by stable, I mean a routine that falls in to a regemental, daily rountine. This has work'd for our family. Before, people would vist my uncle when ever they felt like it (it seemed to me out of guilt). It was with these visits that we found the bigger incidents. Now that every one is scheduled, he occasionally has times of being lucid. But not very often. Still, the incidents of being completely lost are not happening as often. This is what has worked for my family and it was suggested by our doctor. Could be the same thing for their family.

this reminds me of Dudley Moore. I may be wrong but I believe when he became ill he ended up alone with only a caregiver in the end. all that money and fame and no one around at the end. methinks the daughter smells the money.

I think my favorite movie role of his is still "Murder by Death"

"Locked, from the inside. That can only mean one thing. And I don't know what it is. "

"Now, if one of you gentlemen would be so kind as to give my lady friend here a glass of cheap white wine, I'm going down the hall to find the can. I talk so much sometimes, I forget to go. "

"That was then, this is now, and nobody knows what tomorrow will be. That's the way things are, whether we like it or not. "

If you haven't already seen it, rent The In-Laws (the 1979 version, not the lame re-make) starring Falk and Alan Arkin and directed by the great Arthur Hiller. It's a comedy gem. Falk truly was an amazing actor with great range. I loved Columbo, too, but it's a pity most people only know Falk's work from that show. He is also an accomplished artist and often people with raging Alzheimers are still able to paint and draw (e.g. Willem de Kooning). I hope that's true for him.

The In-Laws - the real one, not the remake - is the funniest movie ever made. I've seen it a dozen times and laugh myself sick each time.

Very sad... Columbo was a great show, possibly ahead of its time, compared to some of the really bad detective/crime shows on TV today. Plus, I loved his relatively small role in "The Princess Bride" where he played the grandfather reading the story to his grandson (Fred Willard),

My bad! Willard, of course, is the comedian who played, among other things, Raymond's brother Robert's wife Amy's fundamentalist Christian father on Everybody Loves Raymond (along with the inimitable Georgia Engels as his wife).

Huffpost hits new lows every day with their "reporting". This is one of the lowest. We didn't need to know this. It is personal. Well, it was personal until this,

""Essentially, this is a family matter," Oldman said, noting that Falk was a private man. "It's important that families can figure out how to get along. It's a good outcome for everybody."

Yes, Falk's character waas thinking man's detective, such as the kind Angela Landsbury played in "Murder She Wrote" but much better and better than all of the TV detective shows. Faulk was also a very funny actor. He got rave reviews and upstaged lead actor Glenn Ford in "Pocketful of Miracles"--the Apple Annie remake of that 30's film "Queen For A Day".

After reading this article that my heart went out to his family and him. My mother had early-onset Alzheimer's, and this brought back all the heartache we experienced during that time. I didn't particularly find this to be sensationalistic, and the public should be reminded about these age-related diseases so we can push for more research. There is nothing more heartbreaking than having your once-vibrant mother not recognize her husband, daughter, or granddaughter, and we should do as much as possible to find help for it.

This is an important story to those who admired Falk's career, as well as those who may be dealing with similar family issues. It shows the issues involved with dementia, and how those issues might be resolved. This story was done in a tasteful manner and I appreciate it. Best wishes to Peter Falk and his family.

What a shame that a man that valued his privacy as he did has his wife and daughter in court fighting over what should be a private matter. That judge was very wise in bringing the two sides together before any more mud is slung. If the person that really matters is Peter Falk then they should act accordingly and make sure he's at peace and stop all this drama. While both claimed "victory" the only one I'm worried about is Peter Falk and hope he receives the care he deserves. It's a darn shame that people like him that bought joy to the viewing public is now being fought over as if he's a piece of meat..give him the dignity he deserves..

Aw, this is too sad! I loved Falk in the Columbo series and a few years ago, my hubby and I watched all the reruns of "Columbo" it was so awesome watching the frumpy but genius detective at work. I'll always remember him as one of my favorite actors of all time. I am sure we'll once again watch the whole Columbo series in honor of that wonderful actor.
My thoughts and prayers are with you Peter Falk.
