LOS ANGELES — A judge placed former "Columbo" star's Peter Falk in a conservatorship Monday to ensure his daughter could occasionally visit the ailing 81-year-old actor.

Falk's wife of more than 30 years, Shera, will remain in control of his personal care and affairs. Falk has advanced dementia, likely from Alzheimer's disease, one of his doctors testified Monday.

Catherine Falk petitioned in December to take over her father's affairs despite a sometimes contentious relationship with Falk and his wife. By court order, she will be allowed a 30-minute visit with her father every other month.

Falk's condition virtually ensures he will not remember the meetings, his doctor said.

The Emmy-winning actor slipped rapidly into dementia since a series of dental operations in late 2007, Dr. Stephen Read testified Monday, the final day of a two-day conservatorship hearing.

Read said it was unclear whether Falk's condition worsened as a result of anesthesia or some other reaction to the operation.

Read first evaluated Falk in June 2008 before the actor was scheduled to undergo hip surgery. His dementia and apparent Alzheimer's disease worsened after that procedure, and Read said the actor no longer remembers his signature role in the series "Columbo."

Falk won four Emmys for his starring role in "Columbo." He also received Academy Award nominations for movies in 1959 and 1960.

For months, he has lived in a guesthouse at his Beverly Hills home that has been converted into an art studio and living quarters. He has around-the-clock care, and Shera Falk testified that she cooks dinner for her husband nightly.

Falk in 2005 designated Shera Falk to be his caregiver and the keeper of his estate.

Catherine Falk, 38, withdrew a petition to take over control of the actor's finances, saying she was only concerned about visiting her father.

The hearing placed a spotlight on a series of slights within the family that led to the court action. Catherine Falk alleged Shera Falk ridiculed her father, slammed the door in her face and cut off contact with him when he grew ill.

Shera Falk testified that her husband thought his daughter was troublesome and that they were never close. Her attorney used the actor's personal diary to show how he regarded their relationship in the last decade.

Catherine Falk acknowledged during the hearing that a lawsuit she filed against her father drove a wedge between them, but that they had reconciled. She had sued her father to force him to pay her tuition and expenses while attending Syracuse University.

Her attorney used postcards and telegrams Falk sent to his daughter when she was a child to illustrate a closer relationship than the actor's wife was willing to admit.

As testimony bogged down Monday in a final series of accusations and rebuttals, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Aviva K. Bobb ordered attorneys for both sides into her chambers.

The attorneys then brokered a compromise in a courthouse hallway that would allow Catherine Falk visitations, but not entry into his inner sanctum. The visits will take place at the home of a friend who lives down the street from Peter and Shera Falk.

Shera Falk will not be allowed in the gatherings.

"We're thrilled with the result," said Troy Martin, Catherine Falk's attorney.

Shera Falk's attorney, Marshal Oldman, also claimed victory, saying the hearing proved that Falk's wife had provided top-notch care and should be allowed to continue that role. He said Falk's physical health is good.

"Essentially, this is a family matter," Oldman said, noting that Falk was a private man. "It's important that families can figure out how to get along. It's a good outcome for everybody."

The reason I am here is to make this one comment:

Peter Falk's portrayal of Columbo was nothing short of brilliant, and I wish the media would pay him the respect he deserves by leaving this alone.

So why are you grandstanding for the press, counselor?

As everyone knows, Mr Falk is a superb actor. Never more so than in Wings of Desire, in which he played a version of himself. He did the hardest thing an actor could do -- he always made it long so easy.

When dental work is done, even cleaning, bacteria is released into the blood system. that is the reason anyone with a hip replacement must take antibiotics prior to any dental work. This might be a clue to dementia.

What a body of work Peter built. He's one of the old guards of a Hollywood past. As I was reading the story, I thought of my best friend who is taking care of his Mon and Aunt who are both suffering from this illness. It is a strain on the entire family. It is a numbing experience to watch someone to go through life's joys and sorrow, only to end in a non-cognitive state,

These situations reveal the problems families have in dealing with an ailing family members. Communication, anger, resentment.

I am in this situation right now. I care for my Mother who has mild Dementia/Alzheimers. It is very tough for me each day watching her go downhill. My mother's 2 other children (I refuse to call them family) have seen her only 10 ten times since my father's death in 2001. We have not had good relations (them and I and them sometimes with my Mother) since then.

Last night, against all I hold dear, I called the daughter of one of them, told her about my Mother's illness, told her that I wanted to improve my Mother's quality of life and that I wanted them to visit, even if it meant I had to leave when they came over.

This was HUGE for me. I was vomitting in my mouth with each semi-plea I made to her to visit her grandmother. I got the blandest response possible. I won't go into details but I felt crappy after. I know that there is going to be a fight at the funeral...my sister punched me in the face at my Father's funeral so I am aware of what can and might happen.

But 8 years later I am over what they did to me then and all I want is my Mother to be happy for however long she has left. I doubt they feel the same way.

My Great Aunt had Alzheimers and was failing, but slipped very quickly after dental work.
Had not thought to relate the two.

I experienced severe life-threatening angina symptoms after a dental surgery followed by strong antibiotics which wiped my intestines out and destroyed all the important probiotics which aid in digestion. I immediately suffered angina symptoms which are an indication of severe lack of oxygen in the blood. As I researched it, I found that 95% of the fresh oxygen in the bloodstream is used up in digestion and the longer it takes to digest the more severe in degree and duration the angina attacks became. When I stopped eating heavy pork, chicken, and beef dinners with all those difficult to digest long chain fat molecules and went to vegetables the symptoms immediately went away. If I brought fatty food back into my diet they came back immediately.

Mr. Falk is much heavier than he was when in his prime evidencing an omnivore diet. And there is the trademark cigar of his character. Cigars make you dizzy from lack of oxygen. If you continue you get pains in your arms and as you continue to puff the pains move up your arms to your chest and finally you get a tightness and a pain over your heart. That is angina. The dizziness is the robbing of oxygen to your brain. If you continue you would pass out. When you pass out you lose brain cells. When you lose brain cells you get demented. "De" as in reduce; "mentia" as in mental. Lack of oxygen causes permanent damage to the braincells.

This had nothing to do with the anesthesia. It was the follow-up antibiotics which destroyed his digestive tract efficiency reducing oxygen available to the brain leading to chronic oxygen depletion in the bloodstream which impacts the brains' ability to maintain brain cells. If he eats lightly, stops big meaty meals, and stops smoking he will get better.

I met him in San Francisco while working at the Geary Theater and he is a wonderful person. I wish and hope for his speedy recovery. Please don't cruelly moderate this out, I want him to recover.

Thirty minte visits once the month? That's it? On the other hand, my father had Alzheimer. That is one disease I would not wish on anyone. I could not afford 24 hr care. After a few years, I placed him in a nursing home

Every OTHER month! What a drag. If he's likely not to remember them, why so few? Drag for both he and his daughter at this point.

I have NO telegrams or postcards sent to me by my later father because he was almost always home or working nearby to help support the family. I feel sorry for the daughter if that is all she has to prove a close relationship. I have memories, lots of them.

Because like Lucille Ball and James Garner, Peter Falk is one of the most beloved, admired and enduring TV stars of the last 50 years.

COLUMBO was the first hit TV series to feature the Science based crime solving that CSI and Law & Order and all the others depend on.

The Idiosyncratic Hero of LT. COLUMBO wrote the outline for today's most popular misfit characters like HOUSE, MONK & THE CLOSER and all the others decades before they debuted on TV.

A better question to ask is why don't you know it's news?
