LOS ANGELES — A judge placed former "Columbo" star's Peter Falk in a conservatorship Monday to ensure his daughter could occasionally visit the ailing 81-year-old actor.

Falk's wife of more than 30 years, Shera, will remain in control of his personal care and affairs. Falk has advanced dementia, likely from Alzheimer's disease, one of his doctors testified Monday.

Catherine Falk petitioned in December to take over her father's affairs despite a sometimes contentious relationship with Falk and his wife. By court order, she will be allowed a 30-minute visit with her father every other month.

Falk's condition virtually ensures he will not remember the meetings, his doctor said.

The Emmy-winning actor slipped rapidly into dementia since a series of dental operations in late 2007, Dr. Stephen Read testified Monday, the final day of a two-day conservatorship hearing.

Read said it was unclear whether Falk's condition worsened as a result of anesthesia or some other reaction to the operation.

Read first evaluated Falk in June 2008 before the actor was scheduled to undergo hip surgery. His dementia and apparent Alzheimer's disease worsened after that procedure, and Read said the actor no longer remembers his signature role in the series "Columbo."

Falk won four Emmys for his starring role in "Columbo." He also received Academy Award nominations for movies in 1959 and 1960.

For months, he has lived in a guesthouse at his Beverly Hills home that has been converted into an art studio and living quarters. He has around-the-clock care, and Shera Falk testified that she cooks dinner for her husband nightly.

Falk in 2005 designated Shera Falk to be his caregiver and the keeper of his estate.

Catherine Falk, 38, withdrew a petition to take over control of the actor's finances, saying she was only concerned about visiting her father.

The hearing placed a spotlight on a series of slights within the family that led to the court action. Catherine Falk alleged Shera Falk ridiculed her father, slammed the door in her face and cut off contact with him when he grew ill.

Shera Falk testified that her husband thought his daughter was troublesome and that they were never close. Her attorney used the actor's personal diary to show how he regarded their relationship in the last decade.

Catherine Falk acknowledged during the hearing that a lawsuit she filed against her father drove a wedge between them, but that they had reconciled. She had sued her father to force him to pay her tuition and expenses while attending Syracuse University.

Her attorney used postcards and telegrams Falk sent to his daughter when she was a child to illustrate a closer relationship than the actor's wife was willing to admit.

As testimony bogged down Monday in a final series of accusations and rebuttals, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Aviva K. Bobb ordered attorneys for both sides into her chambers.

The attorneys then brokered a compromise in a courthouse hallway that would allow Catherine Falk visitations, but not entry into his inner sanctum. The visits will take place at the home of a friend who lives down the street from Peter and Shera Falk.

Shera Falk will not be allowed in the gatherings.

"We're thrilled with the result," said Troy Martin, Catherine Falk's attorney.

Shera Falk's attorney, Marshal Oldman, also claimed victory, saying the hearing proved that Falk's wife had provided top-notch care and should be allowed to continue that role. He said Falk's physical health is good.

"Essentially, this is a family matter," Oldman said, noting that Falk was a private man. "It's important that families can figure out how to get along. It's a good outcome for everybody."

I am so sorry for Peter Falk. He has always been one of my favorite actors, ever since he played Joy Boy in Pocketful of Miracles in the early 1960s. In the 1980s, when I studied art at New York City's Art Students League, Falk used to come to the members' life classes sometimes. I had the good fortune of setting up my easel next to what turned out to be his once; he was a pretty darn good artist, and pleasant to chat with during the breaks. Of course, I was also just a bit thrilled. I'm very, very glad that the article mentioned he was living in a combination lodging/art studio. I hope he can still enjoy drawing and painting as he once did, and I wish him well and even hope he can recover from his dementia. Anything is possible.

None of this is any of our business.

Just because some guy had a TV show doesn't mean we have any right to invade his privacy at this time in his life.

This matter belongs in and to his family.

Did I read that right - "she will be allowed a 30-minute visit with her father every other month."

No joke here - if he has dimentia, how would that amount of time register with him?
He would see the person that cleans the carpets more often than her!

One thing a lot of people don't realize about dementia is that it can make the people who suffer from it very angry and depressed or even violent. It can also change your personality not to mention tear families apart. Dementias are very ugly disorders.

A lot of people have made a lot of assumptions about the wife or the daughter being greedy or whatever but try to reserve judgement. It sounds like he has a loving family and the problem is stemming from disagreement over care. I am presently going through this in my own family and it shocks me how easy it is for things to quickly get ugly because too many people who care can't disagree. It's hard to bow to someone else's wishes when it's your spouse or parent's care that is on the line.

If he didn't have all that money he'd certainly not be in as good a situation as he is now, whatever other evils you wish to impart to his wealth.

Enjoy.

His family troubles aside, I sure do appreciate Mr. Faulk's talent and the entertainment he has provided over the years. Thanks, Peter.

My wife says my comment was too obscure. Watch "The Great Race" Jack Lemmon and Peter Falk steal the movie!

This is a such a tragic story. Peter Falk was a family favourite. Columbo was the one tv series we all gathered around as a family to watch. I recently watched 8 seasons worth of DVDs of this great detective creation. Falk is such a wonderful actor. I liked him Princess Bride too as the grandfather reading the story to his sick grandson. Alzeimer's is a dreadful disease and I agree with many here that it also has an impact on family and yes, even friends. It's consoling at least that he may not remember his greatness and grace but many millions will in years to come.

This is tragic on so many levels. Sad that his family is not together for him at this horrible time, sad that we will no longer see anything new from this amazingly talented man, and sad that he doesn't remember how loved he is by all of us. To this day, Columbo is a favorite of my family. I have a grandchild who came along years after Columbo was off the air and it is her favorite show of alltime! Our prayers go out to Mr. Falk and his family.

Yes, it makes me wonder about my 85 year old mother's (who has demensia) dental appointment. She won't be having general anesthesia; I wonder if Falk had it though.

It's pretty common. If a person has dementia already, general anesthetic can really accelerate things a lot. A lot of time, people with dementias are able to function and cover for a long time...especially if they are good actors...but the anesthetic probably uncovered a lot of problems.

I wouldn't worry too much about a regular dental appointment with your grandmother if she isn't getting a general. My mom has dementia and her docs etc mostly stress the importance of avoiding GENERAL anesthetic.

robXdion, thanks for pointing that out........... "the medical procedure's involvement in this are interesting - interesting indeed.

It would seem that we do not know as much about the harm of anesthesia as we should.

I feel such a sadness for what has happened to Mr.. Falk................. he was a great performer. My wish for him is that he find some peace and contentment in whatever state of mine he's in. Bless him...................... he's help me to laugh many, many times.

Oh yes, and keep an eye on the greedy daughter.

My grandmother also lost ground fast after two surgeries. After the second one she was never the same mentally. The first surgery was necessary and the second was to reverse the colostomy she had. We were told at that time that anesthesia was the most likely culprit for her sudden very significant dementia after the second operation.

Sorry to hear that. Not everyone can undergo anesthesia. Especially the elderly.

Dentistry is a culprit for so many ailments effecting the entire organism. The over prescribing of antibiotics after dental surgery leads to angina and demtentia through the decrease of oxygen available for the rest of the body by the removal of probiotic elements in the lower intestines. Bad digestion requires 95% of the available oxygen in the body to be used solely for digestion.

Decreased oxygen available in the blood means the brain gets less than it needs bringing ailments such as this. In Mr. Falks' case, his smoking also was a factor in limiting the amount of oxygen available for his brain cells. The oxygen problem obviously was not serious enough to notice until the dental surgery and the follow-up antibiotics impacted his digestion reducing blood oxygen killing brain cells.

Best cure? Stop smoking. Stop eating heavy meats altogether after the age of 50. Eat a large variety of fresh vegetables and fruits and cold water fish to provide your body with omega 3's and antioxidants. Don't over eat at large meals but rather eat healthy snacks to reduce the strain on digestion system to make more oxygen available to the brain.

I truly love this man having met him in San Francisco while he was working at the Geary Theater and hope that he can pull through by changing his eating and getting more oxygen to help his brain build new neural material. It is possible he can pull through this.

I think it has to do with bacteria in the gums being released in the bloodstream. They just found out that herpes simplex-1 leads to Alzheimer's too. Interesting though.
