Susan Collins: Fellow Republican Senator Backstabbed Me

A pivotal figure in negotiations on the stimulus, Collins was bombarded with about 100,000 E-mails in the days leading up to the vote: about 13,000 from Mainers, who were split on the issue, and the rest from mostly angry out-of-staters who condemned her "in very personal terms," Collins says. National politics can be as much a contact sport as ice hockey, something Mainers know a thing or two about. But what's curious about the anti-Collins campaign is who she thinks was behind it. Though she won't name him publicly, she blames a fellow GOP senator for unleashing it.

Why are these people so nostalgic about how the GOP used to be? It has not been a nice bunch of people for a long, long time. How about Nixon and what he did to George McGovern? Illegaly breaking into his campaign office. Does anyone remember Barry Goldwater and George Wallace? The horrifying pictures on T.V. of people being hosed down and mauled by dogs because of the color of their skin. I am glad people are finally getting more accepting, educated and that they realize we are all humans. Especially young people. They are the ones that are going to change the world as our President Obama has stated many times. People of all ages helped Martin Luther King during the Civil Rights movement, but many young people were involved and helped with the change as well. Unfortunately, the GOP and some states are still dominated by racist.

Their prophetic proscriptions and austere solutions are only suited for those who don't intend to be here once they're disappeared in the twinkling of an eye---right before the bombs drop.

I read the article and couldn't find the word backstabbed anywhere. HuffPo gets looser and looser with the headlines since most of the readers don't bother to read the entire story or do any research on their own. David Simon is correct; web sites like this one are no substitute for newspapers.
