Senate Stimulus

US News and World Report:

When Maine's two U.S. senators, Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins, broke ranks with all but one other Republican and voted "Yes" on President Barack Obama's $787 billion stimulus, they handed the White House an early, critical win. As some Republicans seethed, the two were celebrated as the most powerful women in Washington. [...]

A pivotal figure in negotiations on the stimulus, Collins was bombarded with about 100,000 E-mails in the days leading up to the vote: about 13,000 from Mainers, who were split on the issue, and the rest from mostly angry out-of-staters who condemned her "in very personal terms," Collins says. National politics can be as much a contact sport as ice hockey, something Mainers know a thing or two about. But what's curious about the anti-Collins campaign is who she thinks was behind it. Though she won't name him publicly, she blames a fellow GOP senator for unleashing it.

How a woman can still be in the Republican party with all their misogyny and bigotry is beyond me. Of course, then there's Sarah Palin who fits right in.

Even Susan isn't so stupid that she can't see what these criiminals are up to.
Maybe one day she'll actually leave the party.

I would have thought that all reasoned women would have hightailed it outta there after the mis0gynist, r@cist, theo-hypocrit leadership coup. Once Limblah, blah, blah began to be the spokesperson for the party, you all should of known.

And since when has the current brand of Republicans shown themselves to be loyal? Their brand is w@r profits, outsourcing profits, iIIegal immigrant hiring profit, banking usury profit, corporate welfare profit.....

Don't you get it they are the quintessential false profits.

Whether it's a turtle, fox or frog, I'll bet everyone here is familiar with the story of the scorpion's betraying its benefactor "because it's my nature."

Why anyone finds it remarkable that a Republican betrayed them is beyond me.

I take issue with the theory that the "extreme left" has taken over the Democratic party. Get real: the party nominated Bill Clinton, a moderate southerner in 1992 and 1996; and Al Gore, a moderate southerner in 2000 (both were leaders of the DLC). It nominated John Kerry, a liberal senator, in 2004, but mostly because he was a war hero. It nominated Barack Obama, a moderately liberal senator, in 2008. Moderates play a huge role in the Democratic party: Jim Webb (who's pretty conservative, really); Harry Reid; Steny Hoyer; Hillary Clinton; Diane Feinstein; etc. etc. It is a moderate-liberal coalition. It's left liberals like Dennis Kucinich who are marginalized. They have a voice, the party throws them some crumbs. But the Dems learned about the political wilderness during the Reagan years and shifted toward the center. It's only the Republicans who are led by the ideological extreme of their party.

The Republican party is on it's death bead, they have no new blood that's worth their salt, and haven't had a good idea ever.

All they have left is hate, and hate wont win them any elections.

The premise that issues are secondary to a political party's position of power is archaic.

Forget the historical review, Teddy Roosevelt wouldn't be a modern day Republican. Abe Lincoln would have nothing to do with the misanthropic pap that Lush Limp Paw spews.

Neither the Republican Party or the Democratic Party are more important than the issues that this country faces. Philosophical differences are one thing, but when a group, or political party, votes against what is obviously best for the country, they become entirely irrelevant.

The GOP can pass away and the country will not suffer that loss. Those who reside within that structure can call themselves anything they want, but they obviously don't support democracy, but believe in racial and economic stratification.

Collins and Snowe can remain Republicans, if that somehow makes them feel better, but they need to focus on programs that meet the needs of their constituents, no matter who proposes those programs.

What's little remembered is that Lincoln changed parties in his first term to run again as a National Unionist.

She complains about being stuck in the back?

Her party did so to the entire country-planet and she wants to complain about the pain in her back.

I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Snow and Collins lose their seats the next time they are up for re-election. I know that they are both "moderate", but in the end they mostly vote with the Republics.

Collins just won reelection in 2008, so she’s in no danger anytime soon.
