Obama Lunch

President Barack Obama was greeted with cheers last week when he stopped by Capitol Hill burger joint Five Guys.

The president was joined by NBC anchor Brian Williams and a crew that was filming a behind-the-scenes "Inside The White House" special.

The NBC footage shows Obama and Williams en route to the eatery, Obama with his feet up on the opposite-facing limo seat. When Williams asks whether Obama watches debates about his presidency on cable TV, Obama says, "I have to say, I generally don't... It feels like WWF."

When they arrive at the eatery, Obama -- impatiently knocking on the locked door of the car -- is told that he must wait for the press. He responds by saying, "Why do we have to wait for the press?" Personal aide Reggie Love then opens the car door and says, "Hold on one second, Mr. President," to which Obama responds "I don't want to hold on." And out the door he walks to a crowd of cheering customers.

The clip offers a glimpse of one of the most frustrating elements of the president's job: the demanding group of handlers and security officials who constantly surround him.

Once inside, President Obama orders "one cheeseburger and one fries for me" and pays for the food with money from his own pocket.

What a plug for Five Guys. Personally, I like their hot dogs better, nicely grilled, tasty, hmmm, I'm getting hungry...

This reminded me of the movie scene in which President Michael Douglas 'hops out' to buy flowers for Annette Bening while head speechwriter Michael J. Fox says, 'no hopping, sir!' (Except nobody fainted.)

Ha! I saw that on TV yesterday. I love that movie, and that's a favorite scene. I also loved the moment when the girl behind the counter at the flower shop falls over in a dead faint. "She remembers me," Douglas cracks. LOL

I enjoyed watching this, but Obama should check out In N Out Burger next time he's in California. That place is the jam as far as burgers go.

Agreed!

I thought jam was for toast. Or music as in "jamming." Maybe "in a jam" or "I'll have jam with that peanut butter." Hmmm, that sounds kinda good. Gonna go make myself a sandwich...later.

Nothing wrong with good old PR, those customers and staff at Five Guys will remember that day for rest of their lives.

Love Obama, love Five Guys! He's a rock star because everyone likes him and he's smart and awesome. That's all.

Someone needs to tighten the reign on this celebrity , Obama . He is getting too big for his breeches. At the moment he sees others especially the media, who help to put him in the White House, as dispensable. O' the extent of vanity! "Pride goes before a fall".

maybe we can teach him to speak in broken english and start illegal and unnecessary wars.

would that bring him back to earth?

Well, he's certainly too big for your breeches.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 07:52 PM on 06/04/2009

No he's not. My take on it was he didn't want to make it into a publicity stunt and therefore did not need the media to go in and get his burgers!

****LOL I loved that, it must be tough being President though, with so many people surrounding you even though it is for his safety, it has to be frustrating afterwhile*****

I gotta say this rockstar presidency doesn't sit well with me. I'm glad he's well liked. But why is he going to get food? And always doing press. I'm glad things look transparent but does a president ever really work or just get briefed, make some speeches, get lunch, and do interviews? While making the occasional decision when a justice retires or to rescind a Bush policy.

Why is he going to get food ? Um maybe cause he is tired of being waited on sometimes and wants to pay an actual business putting money in, helping keeping their jobs and taking care of his staff with lunch like bosses do. He also needs to eat in order to LIVE ! There is no such thing as any human who can make their life work 24/7 and survive. Sleep, eating, fresh air, relaxation are all required to be able to maintain and remain focused when it comes to work. Unlike the last admin Obama actually does work as we see on a daily basis unlike Bush who took many vacations to Texas and ran this country into the ground.

You could not have seen the NBC documentary the last two evenings and have come to conclusions like the ones you stated. He is one of the most hard working presidents ever. For instance, he has been trying to read the same book since mid April. Bush read two books a week!

Besides, going out for a burger is a bit of a normal moment. Remember Eddie Murphy's routine about "home burgers" in the 80's. Everybody likes a burger out as opposed to a "home burger."

Bush read 2 books a week. I didn't know he could read. I thought he used pictures. I think someone lied to you to account for all the time he spent figuring out what lie he was going to tell next.

As opposed to the guy who didn't think we needed to know squat because he and his cohorts knew the best for the dumb peoples. Wage war, lie, tank the economy, leave hurricane victims on the lurch, let 9/11 happen while clearing brush. Guy couldn't string two sentences together without some misspoken sentence, word, or mispronunciation. We need transparency after what we had for the last 8 years. He knows that and he means to prove that government can work with transparency and constant information flow, imagine this, both ways.

Are u nuts??

We finally have a non-puppet, non-cloned, non-crony real MAN as the leader of the richest and most influential power of the world and you call him a rock star?? How dim can you be??? And what on earth would make you so suspicious? Could it be years of BUSHISM and the resulting global disaster of his incompetence, and the pure and unadulterated avarice of his cronies??

Americans finally have something to be proud of, after years of indecent exposures, and a convoluted and corrupted reign of self serving, mentally stunted, and morally retarded "Good Old Boy Royalty" GOP.

Let the man enjoy his burgers!! Let his staff enjoy working for a people's man. Long live democracy, screw the GOP royalty for good!!

Way to Go Mr. President!!

This family put their lives on the line for us, and I'm so a shame how the Republicants behave about taking his wife out on a date. But I certainly liked the way the President hit back, for he said that he would like to take a shuttle but, because of this status, he cannot do that. Well, of course not! Nobody asked any President and family to take the local bus, train, taxi, shuttle, commercial flight or drive himself to his destination. Shame on us American to have sat back and allow the Media to go after this man and his wife. God please keep the Obama family safe from these vultures.

I hate to say it, but this makes me feel more emotional and proud of my country than anything I've seen in a long time. Our president is a genuinely decent, normal dude. Finally!

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:23 PM on 06/04/2009

Don't hate that emotion. Like you said, "finally" we have a president that can ellicit that kind of emotion. Instead of the negative feelings so many of us had for so many years, we now can be proud of our president and his family. That kind of emotional feeling will help spark the desire to jump in and help clean up the mess of the last 8 years. That emotion will make it easier to accept some of the hard changes that will have to happen to get America back on track. That emotion is something we all should feel. I am happy to say that I was moved by the NBC program. I recorded it and will make sure my children see what our president is doing for our country. I am proud of President Obama and his family. Keep up the great work. We are ready for change. We are ready to accept responsibility and help turn our country around.

Our president is a mensch, a guy, the real thing, a folk, a member of the community he represents, however great the position of power that he holds, he will insist on being himself, nothing has changed, he represents, but is still one of, the folk, the great majority that make America what id is and what it hopes to be. No other man, or woman, on this earth, is capable of being and doing such as he, May God bless him and watch over him, and may the body of persons assigned to keep him safe, do well their jobs, i t is no great secret that his every day presents it's dangers. He, and his wife, are courageous and good folk, we are fortunate to have him as our leader at this very critical point in history.

Amen! I just said a prayer for him and his family. He is trying to be as "normal" as possible but he has a huge bullseye on his back. I pray that his security detail will keep him safe from the nut jobs out there that want to harm him.
