Obama Lunch

President Barack Obama was greeted with cheers last week when he stopped by Capitol Hill burger joint Five Guys.

The president was joined by NBC anchor Brian Williams and a crew that was filming a behind-the-scenes "Inside The White House" special.

The NBC footage shows Obama and Williams en route to the eatery, Obama with his feet up on the opposite-facing limo seat. When Williams asks whether Obama watches debates about his presidency on cable TV, Obama says, "I have to say, I generally don't... It feels like WWF."

When they arrive at the eatery, Obama -- impatiently knocking on the locked door of the car -- is told that he must wait for the press. He responds by saying, "Why do we have to wait for the press?" Personal aide Reggie Love then opens the car door and says, "Hold on one second, Mr. President," to which Obama responds "I don't want to hold on." And out the door he walks to a crowd of cheering customers.

The clip offers a glimpse of one of the most frustrating elements of the president's job: the demanding group of handlers and security officials who constantly surround him.

Once inside, President Obama orders "one cheeseburger and one fries for me" and pays for the food with money from his own pocket.

I wish the press and all of Obama's adoring fans would pay a little more attention to the expanding war/occupation in Afghanistan and Pakistan and the fact that Obama just gave GM $50 billion to GM to ship our car industry over to China and further kill middle class jobs -- but the bankers will make tons of $.

I wish you had complained over the past 8 years while our country and the world crumbled under the weight of Cheney/Bush. Uh, this mess did not develop in the past 5 months. What did you do or say bo--that would be Before Obama.

I don't know what press you're watching, but they are. You sound like Lou Dobbs in fact.

I wished for eight years that GW's adoring and illinformed fans would have paid a little attention to his numerous blunders, disasters and outright lies. The corporations made billions over that timespan and the average American family took it in the shorts. So where have you been??

Obama is a big deal. He is POTUS.

But why does the “press” need this access or this set-up? Why don’t they go research some NEWS.
Flash, live at 5 - - - - man eats burger!! EXCLUSIVE Spicy mustard controversy at 11

That traveling press BS reminds me of flies at a picnic. They want it easy and whenever they want it.

Someday a POTUS is going to put a stop to this gaggle of gawkers.
This man just might be the one.

I found the NBC special very interesting, actually. You rarely see this kind of behind-the-scenes footage.

SORRY if that bothers you.

I'm not sorry if it bothers them at all. It fills me with delight to know that the most powerful boss in the world has enough humility to run an errand for his staff. Even if was only to get himself out of the office for an hour. And even if the press tagged along.
I am also delighted to learn that he knows the difference between cable news and real news. Millions of Americans take the soap opera with stuntmen that is professional wrestling seriously, but that does not mean that everyone else has to respond to their gyrations. The same is true of these clowns on cable news and talk radio spouting their bilious rhetoric and cheapening political discourse. If we ignore them they won't necessarily go away, but maybe they would become less of a factor in the national debate..

I saw no frustration, but I can understand how anyone could be frustrated by ... let's wait for the press... Come on? He's the president -- he wasn't given a nation address, he was just going out for a burger. He needs to let the press get into position for that? Obama should have fired that guy on the spot.

Not Reggie. He wasn't that upset, really. He just made a decision and never thought anything of the situation after he did. Only we dwell on it.

The headline on this piece is silly. I saw no frustration - Obama was very matter of fact, and why indeed should he wait for the press to catch up on a burger run?!

Not sure I agree. It was subtle, but the frustration was there.

Why should he wait for the press? Because the WDC reporters do their jobs with diligence and fairness, and deserve to be treated with respect--

Who am I kidding?

It's not looking good.

It's looking like they're going to actually set the cause back a decade by enacting a "public option" that will only kick in at economic triggers that will never happen, like the public option in Medicare Part D.

That's right, Medicare Part D has a public option. Which has never been made available to the public in the 6 years since it passed.

I got embarrassed just watching this video. Do they think the American people are stupid? We see this guy EVERY SINGLE DAY! How cheesey...him taking orders for hamburgers and then going and getting them. So scripted. As far as his getting testy, he acts like a spoiled child. Can't take his Blackberry away from him.... I don't want to.....Why do we have to wait?.....sounds like a whiney child to me. So silly......

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:05 AM on 06/04/2009

Why are you embarassed? so, he didn't want to wait for the press, he wanted to go in and order his hamburger and fries. I guess for some people it is a little different to see the President out amongst regular people, eating at local restaurants, then giving those restaurants a boost in business in these tough times. Who would of thought a President would go that route for the American people in these dire straights. I can think of many things to be embarassed about in a President (especially the last one who sat in office) but this is not one of them.

I gotta admit, I have high hopes for President Obama and America in general. Our country has a long way to go, but if we counter the spin of the right, we can right the wrongs of the past 8 years. George W. never did anything for me, except instill fear and anger. At least with President Obama, I feel less fear in my day to day life and less anger. Kudos to President Obama.
