Obama Lunch

President Barack Obama was greeted with cheers last week when he stopped by Capitol Hill burger joint Five Guys.

The president was joined by NBC anchor Brian Williams and a crew that was filming a behind-the-scenes "Inside The White House" special.

The NBC footage shows Obama and Williams en route to the eatery, Obama with his feet up on the opposite-facing limo seat. When Williams asks whether Obama watches debates about his presidency on cable TV, Obama says, "I have to say, I generally don't... It feels like WWF."

When they arrive at the eatery, Obama -- impatiently knocking on the locked door of the car -- is told that he must wait for the press. He responds by saying, "Why do we have to wait for the press?" Personal aide Reggie Love then opens the car door and says, "Hold on one second, Mr. President," to which Obama responds "I don't want to hold on." And out the door he walks to a crowd of cheering customers.

The clip offers a glimpse of one of the most frustrating elements of the president's job: the demanding group of handlers and security officials who constantly surround him.

Once inside, President Obama orders "one cheeseburger and one fries for me" and pays for the food with money from his own pocket.

Go Obama! The presidency is not a television show. Go greet the people!

Quit making the guy with The Football wait for his burger!

Most interesting his remarks comparing cable news to wrestling -- meaning all the "debates" between pundits are completely scripted just as WWE matches are. It's all entertainment with pundits. I agree.

I totally get this story.

Without getting into too much details here ... I have had the pleasure and privilege of being first hand around the realities of VIP and diplomatic circles. I understand his frustration. There is a lot of waiting around in limos and planes while the media checks sound equipment, lighting, angles, crowds, etc. Being told to constantly "wait" is reality of this chosen life that can try your patients every hour.

When President Obama said "I don't want to wait." I get it. Why not leave the limo and greet the crowd of supporters rather than waiting because Joe-Media can't get his s**t together.

Reminds me of the video of Dick Cheney visiting Mississippi after Katrina hit. As he's talking to som locals, you can hear someone giving back to Cheney what Cheney gave to Sen Leahy on the Senate floor. If you don't know, its: "Go @#$% yourself Mr Cheney, go @$#% yourself."

While Obama is not immune to such criticism, it reminds me of the general feeling over the past 8 years.

As a Brit, I'm frequently bemused at the level of mundane detail you Americans are fascinated in when it comes to your politicians/Presidents. Where each minute action is oohed and aahed over. Gee, the President carries coins in his pockets - wow! Seriously, you guys need to get lives.

Are you saying you Brits weren't exactly like that when it came to Princess Diana (bless her)? Maybe you weren't, but I think a lot of your countrymen were.

I am a black American. I've been here all of my life. My mother has some stories to tell about what she went through. I don't think you understand what this president means to people like me. Given our past, most of us are still a bit awed that he's even in the White House.

Also, things are so bad over here. I personally can't find a job. For Sale signs are popping up in front of my neighbors' houses. We need hope right now, and this guy represents it.

How about this. I won't point out how you Brits go wild over your princes and princesses, if you don't point out how we go wild over our elected officials.

Right on the nose!! Go JaneQ.

I lived in London for over a year and was exposed to the lack of individuality amongst the people, their keen interest in rag journalism, and their obviously envy of our great success as a "New World"! After all they are the GB and all the world is nothing but her colonies!!

I get your point, but alot of Americans don't understand British fascination with royals. It would frustrate the bejeezus out of me to know that my tax dollars were going to "royalty" living high off the hog at their people's expense. Yes, I know our senators,e tc tend to be wealthy, but the majority of it doesn't come from tax dollars.

The contrast could not be greater between now and the previous 8 years. Bush would not be caught dead, every night reading letters from everyday Americans, as Obama regularly does. Bush would never go outside his bubble of screened audiences for fear of being confronted by real Americans. Obama wades into America, stays connected to real America, draws his strength from real Americans so he does not lose his focus and grounding in reality. BTW the White House physician must be cringing on the menu choices and Obama's continued smoking, but nobody is perfect. And all of this also highlights the need for the Secret Service to do a herculean job of protecting this man.

Politifact's Truth-o-Meter has the entire list of Obama's 40+ campaign promises. They are tracking them to see if he's broken or fulfilled them.

So far, he has fulfilled 30 and broken 6. See here:

http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/promises/

He is working on more of them. It is just his first year. He never promised to have 400 campaign promises done after just 6 months of being in office.

How do you think our other presidents did on their campaign promises? I am willing to bet not nearly so well as this one.

actually if you look at the list of top 25 promises he has kept 2 and broken one.

He had better listen to his handlers, because HATE RADIO AND TELEVISION is igniting the fires under the many nutcases that want to harm him in the worst way. The world for him outside of his security bubble IS SIMPLY NOT A SAFE PLACE and will become far less safe after this Muslim trip.

DELIGHTFUL video. What a POTUS!! He is doing his best to stay normal and not let the magnitude of his office change the way he likes his life to be. GREAT!!

...which is exactly what they want you to think. He's so NORMAL. He gets BURGERS. *I* get burgers! He's, therefore, JUST LIKE ME! I love the 'bama...!

PAY ATTENTION. You're losing more liberties than you know by letting the likes of FISA slide. We're quickly becoming a surveillance society, and people like you are fawning, letting it happen.

I voted for Obama. I knew that McCain would be a far worse and more dangerous choice. We've got some very, very wealthy people in this country steering policy, and the President, though he has much power to affect change, WON'T DO IT as long as he has fawning little fanboys/girls running around lapping up every photo op.

Well he voted for FISA before the election and made no bones about it. FISA isn't really knew though, in fact it originated with FDR of all people. As long as there is a judge that has to sign off on the wiretaps then I don't see any change from what the liberal hero Roosevelt did and this country has been doing for some time.

Could it possibly be that the President had a hankering for a burger and fries...spur of the moment...and decided...spur of the moment ...to take some time from his busy day to scoot out for same...and being the gentleman that he so obviously is...he asked around the office if anyone else would like some of the same.

He then paid for the lot and carried it to the car...just like a regular guy...besides being POTUS ..he is just that also, a regular guy.

I think he is well aware that everything he does is scrutinized...and he chooses to act with manners in all his observable moments....sets a great example for all of us.

I watched both nights of the Special....LOVED IT.

I have recently discovered...via re runs the telly series "The West Wing".
Amazing how close that show came to the reality of the real deal.
I am a Senior and recently began a Bucket List for myself.

For sure visiting the White House is now on my list:) V.

This was a very normal thing to do. The man has lived his life with regular people and now his life is totally altered. One of the things he said just before the inauguration was that both he and Michelle were a little concerned that they wouldn't be able to do the normal things they enjoyed doing, such as walking, going to restaurants together and generally in public. Watching this video reminded me of what he had said and how he was managing to stay connected to every day people. I've never seen a president do that kind of thing before, I'm sure the secret service people were going nuts.
I am concerned that he may not be able to get done many of the things he said he wanted to do, but I've also come to the realization, that I don't think any president can because it has finally hit home as to the real power in this country and the world; the bankers, corporations and the industrial war complex. President Obama can do very
little over any of that, ITS THE PEOPLE THAT HAVE TO MAKE HIM AND SUPPORT HIM.

Wow! It's like something out of a movie, but it's actually happening. Can you imagine just sitting there next to a President Obama, feet up, legs crossed, jacket off, chilling out in the back of a limo? Then the impromptu visit to a Five Guys (they're good burgers) and Obama just blowing everybody's minds there. It's just marvelous.

I wonder what Brian Williams was thinking at a quiet moment while he's sitting there: "I'm sitting next to the president of the United States, the POTUS, the leader of the free world. How did I get here!?"

How can you not love the 'bama?

Would have been great if like Spicolli driving to the drive in, or Harold and Kumar driving to White Castle, that when the Prez and Brian drove up in a limo and the doors opened, a huge plume of smoke flew out, and they both stumbled out, laughing and mumbling something about jonesing for them burgers. I think that's why the Prez was so anxious to get to the burger joint.

Now that's the kind of president that I want!

LOL
