I Like ItI Don’t Like It

PARIS — President Barack Obama said Tuesday the American people love all things French and acknowledged his own penchant for Gallic food and wines.

In his first interview with a French television channel, Obama heaped praise on the country in an apparent attempted to stamp out any lingering tensions sparked by France's opposition to the United State's 2003 invasion of Iraq.

"France is one of the most important countries in the world," the president told I-Tele and Canal Plus, days ahead of a trip that will take him to Normandy and Paris for D-Day commemorations. He said French collaboration was crucial to solving the world's problems, from climate change to the global recession.

Obama also spoke enthusiastically about French President Nicolas Sarkozy, with whom he said he had a "wonderful relationship."

"He has been very courageous in some of the decisions he has made," Obama said, referring to Sarkozy's strong stance on Afghanistan and Iran's nuclear program.

Sarkozy's predecessor, Jacques Chirac, sparked widespread hostility toward France and French people and products among Americans with his staunch opposition to the Iraq war.

But Obama strove to prove that the days of "freedom fries" and U.S. boycotts of French wines and cheeses _ which have come to symbolize the worst of the recent bout of French-American tension _ are a thing of the past.

"I think the American people continue to love all French things," he said. Relations between France and the U.S. have steadily improved in recent years, particularly since the 2007 election of Sarkozy, who is widely seen as pro-American, and that of Obama, who is wildly popular in France.

Asked what about France he himself loved, Obama responded, "Let's see, we have the food, we have Paris, we got the south of France, Provence, the wine."

Obama said he had traveled through France during his college days and that a return trip to the southeastern region of Provence was long overdue, though he acknowledged his French was rusty.

"I studied it in high school and I just forgot it," he said, adding "Michelle, I think she speaks a little French."

"Merci beaucoup," he said, concluding the 10-minute-long interview.

As a speaker of atrocious French, I have a tip for others in a similar position visiting France. If your few words of French aren't getting a friendly response, it's because you've got your initial greeting wrong.

When the French greet each other - customers speaking to shop assistants, waiters, ticket-sellers, etc., they do it by saying 'bonjour, monsieur/bonjour madam', and they do it with a rising and quite emphatic intonation. They do _not_ just say 'bonjour', in a flat tone of voice. Listen to the French people around you, and you'll notice it immediately, once you pay attention.

I can't think why my French teacher at school never mentioned this, but eventually I realised that just saying 'bonjour' in a flat tone is the French equivalent of our sulky-teenager grunt instead of speech. And the French are in fact _very_ polite, so when they hear foreigners do this, it has the same irritating effect on them as the sulky-teenager grunt has on us: and they respond accordingly, with an icy tone.

Once you learn to greet people correctly, you'll get a very different response. Faces light up, and big smiles appear, because you've shown yourself to be a friendly and polite person. Most foreigners who think the French are rude think that simply because they are unwittingly being rude to the French.

Seriously, this revelation has totally changed my experiences of France: try it!

It's true.

Try saying Bonjour in a more sing-song voice with the Jour a note higher

I remember being in a shop on the Ille. St. Louis having a thoroughly fabulous Paris afternoon when an American tourist burst into the shop and literally yelled " where is the subway ". I was the only non-French person in the shop - everyone turned and started in horror at this barbarian.
Your advice is totally correct. I find the French to be delightful, friendly and very helpful - because they realize I am not one of the barbarians. I took the time to understand how to say a few key phrases correctly - always announce yourself when you enter a shop and speak as you leave, whether or not you have a visual fix on a clerk. It really is quite civilized. Viva la France !

I only spent about 4 days in Paris (in February--bad timing, it was freezing!), so I definetly need to go back and experience the summer. Also, about Obama stating that he has a great relationship w/ Sarkozy, didn't Sarkozy diss our President after the summit in Europe in March. I distincly remember reading an article here on HuffPo in which Sarkozy was quite rude. As a consequence of that article I no longer think highly of Sarkozy, because he was so petty, and his remarks were not befittting that of a world leader.

I am so pleased Obama is working to mend our differences with France. The idiocy displayed during the Bush years made me embarrassed to be an American at times. Remember Freedom Fries? All the surrender-monkey crap?

France loves you back Mr. President! For exemple, my parents who live in the middle of nowhere in Britanny often say that you are the best thing that's happened to the world in some time. My Mom thinks that you have the most beautiful smile, but she has a crush, so do my sister, nieces, and girlfriends... Ooh la la!

This is the reason why the Obama tees sell like "petits pains*" in France !

*petits pains: bread - it means that these tees sell "like crazy".

Bonjour, Corine. I'm glad our President is so well loved in France. We have a lot of stupid stuff we have to heal.

You have got to love President Obama; and, getting rid of all the foolishness related to France from the previous administration.

President Sarkozy and Nuclear Disarmament:

Did you read it too? French President Sarkozy in his private talk with Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki on Wednesday, the official Israeli reporter said Sarkozy delivered a message to Iran. It said, France would start dismantling her nuclear bombs and remove them from their submarines if Iran would agree not making nuclear bombs in the future.

This is great news. France has stepped up to the plate, President Sarkozy said, and would set herself as an example for international nuclear disarmament.

This may be a dream, but you never know.

I love all things French too, except for Parisians. The minute I left Paris, I found everyone outgoing, friendly and helpful. The Parisians treat you like dirt the minute they hear you're American - and I speak French! If you can get out of Paris, you will fall in love with the people of France and the French countryside. Magnfique!

I just spent ten days in France, three of which were in Paris, and the Parisians were just as friendly and helpful as those in the smaller towns. From the workers in our hotel to waiters and people on the street who helped me with directions, they were ALL very nice and helpful. Vive la France!!!!

Yeah, me too. Love Paris. Didn't speak French but that didn't stop people from wanting to talk to me.

When I went, the Parisians were incredibly nice to me. I was eating at "Relais de l'Entrecote" which is a couple of blocks from the Champs-Elysees and a couple of French university students gave me some recommendations about the menu choices. They told me this is the steak that all of France wants to get the recipe (and it was quite good!)

I went to "Le Boeuf sur le Toit": and when I was done, ALL of the waiters made a point to thank me and wish me well. They knew I was a tourist

Don't you just love Paris? I wish our society was more like it. I too was treated nicely, but I represented myself as Canadian as I'm so incredibly embarrassed of my country. Thank God for the wonderful President Obama...I can now go to Paris and say I'm a proud American...and I voted for him too!!!
