Rush And Newt

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich backed down on Wednesday from his earlier remarks calling Judge Sonia Sotomayor a racist -- in large part, it seems, out of concern about the political implications of attacking the first Latina Supreme Court nominee on those lines.

His counterpart in that effort, however, is staying true to his words. Rush Limbaugh led his show on Wednesday by insisting that his words on Sotomayor "have not been too strong," adding later, "I'm not retracting it."

At one point, remarkably, the brash radio host said he could see himself supporting Sotomayor's nomination, provided that she had the right position on social issues.

"I can see a possibility of supporting this nomination if I can be convinced that she does have a sensibility toward life in a legal sense," said Limbaugh, who added that if Obama's nominee would overturn Roe v. Wade, it would be "huge" and enough for him to rethink his opposition. "I don't know if it will ever happen," he concluded.

That said, Limbaugh did not back away from some of the more controversial remarks he has made about Sotomayor to this point. Saying that he had "just heard [about Gingrich's remarks] before the program started," he claimed to have his "own theory about what Newt's doing."

"But since I'm not doing it," he said, "I'm not going to comment. I'm not retracting it. Nobody's refuted it. You know, they're out there saying 'It's too harsh. It's distracting, Rush. You're calling -- don't want to use the word.' Why? If the word means something and if it fits, I use it. Now they may say 'Don't say it, Rush. Dial it back a little bit' but nobody's saying I'm wrong. Nobody's saying I'm making it up. I mean, when she says that she'd do a better job than a white guy, what is it? It's racism. It's reverse racism, whatever but it's still racism. She would bring a form of racism, bigotry to the court."

Later in the program, he was even more definitive. "I have not retracted my charge that she's a racist and a bigot," he said. "I have not eaten my words. You're missing the fundamental part of this. Gosh, this is -- she's a pro-life racist."

Media Matters has the video:

The remarks from Limbaugh come just hours after Gingrich published an op-ed for the conservative site Human Events in which he acknowledged that his "initial reaction" to Sotomayor "was strong and direct -- perhaps too strong and too direct. The sentiment struck me as racist and I said so. Since then, some who want to have an open and honest consideration of Judge Sotomayor's fitness to serve on the nation's highest court have been critical of my word choice."

Clearly, elected officials in the Republican Party are acutely aware that the early, heated, rhetoric on Sotomayor had a danger of seriously alienating Hispanic voters. It's not a surprise, therefore, that Gingirch, who has ties to the GOP political establishment, backed away from his remarks while Limbaugh, whose connections to elected Republicans is much more limited, has not.

A couple of xenophobic bigots not worth the time it take to decide if they ought to be taken seriously or not.

RL cannot vote on the nominee. Therefore, his opinion counts for nothing.

Next rant Rush, this one is tired and old.

Yes he is.
Which is a pity as he used to make my day.
Now it's back to waterboarding butterflies.

The way i see it.
Either Rush's comments will drive all the moderates, and minorities out the republican party or they will drive him out of existence. Either way it's a Win / Win for the Dems.

No one seems to be answering the charge. Was it a racist comment or not? Would you consider it racist if a white man had said something similar (white mens background allowing them to make better decisions than latino females). If yes, then why does she get a pass for saying the same tihng?

to put this "tempest in a teapot" in perspective, if the liberals had made a similar observation about a similar comment made by anybody on the right, they'd currently be being accused of overreacting, and people like Lush and BillO would be bending over backwards to accuse them of being overly sensitive (and unable to take a joke).

why is it that the right didn't seem to find all the snarfy comments about Obama's middle name, or Palin's blatantly inflammatory comments about terrorism to be at all racist?

it's called a double-standard, that's why.

The question is whether she can stick to legal interpretations of the law, her words were from a legal opinion at a commencement. of college graduates, not a court ruling. To be fair, everyone from every walk of life should have their next job application dependent on their personal statements they might have made 7-8 years ago in a unrelated setting... That is what she is being held to. Besides, the context of what she actually said has been distorted... if you read the entire statement... she's saying that in given scenario a Latina women might make a better decision than a white man Example, the task is to feed your family from the best taco stand in your neighborhood. Chances are, a Latino woman with 4 kids and a husband may know more than the white guy who doesn't even live in any barrio... That doesn't make her a racist; it was a practical observation given the circumstances. Two things are often present when reckless knee-jerk reactions fly. Projectionism and manipulation of the word to make an accusation seem more true.... like when Hitler blamed the Jews for burning the German Parliment building; his thugs actually did it ... helped him take Germany into war.. Words can be used to sway the weak... 7 years later, 4300 dead kids, and thousandsof injured troops - Cheney admits no Hussein tie to Al Qaeda... drink the kool-aid; it'll make you feel better.

To be fair to sotomayor, part of the reason I'm so concerned about the statement she made is because it appears to confirm that obama picked a candidate who would make legal decisions based on empathy. In one of his interviews, Obama stated that he would like to see judges and justices to allow empathy to factor into their legal rulings. And that is completely wrong headed. Judges have no busines being empathetic to either side in a complaint. Their job is to IMPARTIALLY interpret the law according to the constitution.

I'm afraid she will turn out to be just the kind of candidate Obama sais he wants.

Well, I'd like to see the folks here consider the question seriously. Was it a racist comment or not? Yes or NO? Would you folks consider it acceptable if a white man had said he thought being a white male would allow him to make better decisions than a latino female? If its not ok for a white male to make a comment like that, then why are you giving her a pass for saying something similar?

Psychopaths never back down from any of their opinions because their opinions are always on the mark. They can't ever be wrong regarding anything that might be judged as right or wrong. The true problem with the culture of the US is that so many of its inhabitants are of the ilk that they can take this man seriously. They could be led by the nose by any other jingoist, nationalist, macho psychopath that comes along, and there are many of them out there. Therein lies the greatest danger to the nation.

I take objection to your phrase "of the ilk that they can take this man seriously"
I've also seen it as "and their ilk" It seems to be used always in a negative sense.
this is a shame because, before they driven out of their homeland and into the jungle, the Ilk were a good people, but time and usage has imbued their name with a negative connotation, sort of like what was done tto the Bode family, or John Crapper.
