When General Motors filed for bankruptcy earlier this week, the century-old automaker announced that it would quickly cut a number of brands. The new GM's ad campaign promised that a smaller, more profitable company would emerge from bankruptcy. This could mean, of course, that some of GM's most beloved brands could be downsized, or eliminated altogether. The Detroit manufacturing stalwart has already sold the Hummer and Opel brands, and announced plants to eliminate Pontiac.

But which GM brands will be around in 10 years? Which cars could help save the venerable GM? Check out our slideshow, and vote for which brand you think will last:

om your lips to Congress' ear! A comprehensive plan for a sustainable America. I would add two more items to the agenda: eliminate paid lobbyists in Washington and level-fund all campaigns for election to public office. In the age of the internet, there

GM - so poorly managed they succeeded in killing off some of the most historic badges in their history:

GTO
LeMans
Firebird
Bonneville
Tempest
Camaro
Cutlass
442 and Hurst Olds
Skylark (GS)
Impala
Belair

The problem was created when the General Motors corporate brand was imposed on different combinations of dealership brands that once stood alone. Proctor and Gamble does it right, people will buy competing detergents from P&G because promotes the product brand name over the corporate brand name. If you did not look at the side of the box you would never know it was a P&G product. As a result its brands stood the test of time.

GM has to either get back to having clear cut separate brand dealerships represented by income levels, or have a consistant GM multi-tiered dealership network offering all the established Chevy, Buick and GMC model brands in every GM dealership.

Caddy dealerships should be separated from the GM brand and stand onits own like the Lexus is separated from Toyota.

It will also mean separating the cars from the trucks. A truck is a truck and a good part of the market is a professional who uses the vehicle for business. A truck made by a truck manufacturer should be better than one than made by a car manufacturer. I suggest moving all the Chevy trucks to GMC. The model brands are strong enough to stand the change.

As for the SUVs, if its more like a car than truck like than it belongs to Chevy, Buick or Caddy. If its more truck like than car, it belongs with GMC.

For a while GM was using plastic parts inside their doors, to open the windows and doors. Naturally they had loads of problems. I hope they learned their lesson. I do hope they do better the 2nd time around.

If they take the Pontiac G8 plaform and used it for a Chevrolet Impala (which they do in the Middle East) and expand it to their other brands, I'd be more inclined to buy a GM car.

I really like the new Buick Lacrosse, it has a better interior and exterior than the Lexus and is much cheaper.

I have had no trouble with me GMC truck and will buy another one to replace it after the economy recovers (and I land a new job - I'm one of the millions that have been laid-off this year).

The Buick LaCrosse in the first picture looks pretty good. It resembles the Lexus GS Sedan. Finally, GM is realizing the key to beating the competition is matching what they have, not coming up with "original" designs like the Pontiac Aztek.

Toyota Camry's - trust me. I'm surrounded by old people driving Camry's in Florida. And they are usually white or silver (I'm talking about the color of the cars).

No GM model will last. I drove GM for 30 years (a new car every 3 years) until 2006 when I finally woke up and bought Toyota. A much better car at a much better price. Why did I hang on to the junk for 30 years? We swapped out all our cars to foreign models and I was stunned at the improved value and reliability across the board. GM broke a 30 year loyalty and expects they can do anything to get me back, NEVER. Now, GM has me paying via taxes for a broken company that I defended for 30 years too long. Let the junk heap die.

What on earth are you doing with those cars, demolition derby? BTY, you are about to hit the 3 year mark on the TOYota, I can't see it making it to 4.

Well we can hope the the $40,000 Volt with its $9000 every four years battery replacement will catch fire and save GM. Just like born again GTO which fell on its transmission and low mpg

What was one of GM's genius quotes, "We don't make cars, we make money"? Any wonder they are where they are today. People were predicting this back in the '90s, I think Frontline even had a documentary on this.

Sweden refused to give Saab any government money or guarantees. They said it was inappropriate use off public funds. And they're the socialists.
