What's Your Reaction?
Hal Turner

Things don't appear to be going to well for New Jersey internet radio host and white supremacy-enthusiast Hal Turner. The onetime candidate for Congress and inveterate threatener of public officials has run afoul of the law, and will face charges in Connecticut. The Hartford Courant has the news:

Turner, who has been identified as a white supremacist and anti-Semite by several anti-racism groups, hosts an Internet radio program with an associated blog. On Tuesday, the blog included a post that promised to release the home addresses of state Rep. Michael Lawlor, state Sen. Andrew McDonald and Thomas Jones of the State Ethics Office.

"Mr. Turner's comments are above and beyond the threshold of free speech," Capitol Police Chief Michael J. Fallon said in an e-mail announcing the warrant. "He is inciting others through his website to commit acts of violence and has created fear and alarm. He should be held accountable for his conduct."

The remarks on the blog were a reaction to the recent controversy over a bill that would have changed the way the Roman Catholic Church is governed, taking power away from church officials and turning it over to lay members. It was pulled in mid-March following an outcry from Catholics across the state and questions about its constitutionality.

The comments in question included, "It is our intent to foment direct action against these individuals personally. These beastly government officials should be made an example of as a warning to others in government: Obey the Constitution or die," and "If any state attorney, police department or court thinks they're going to get uppity with us about this, I suspect we have enough bullets to put them down, too."

These sorts of threats of impending violence are nothing new to Turner.

In December of 2006, Turner called for political assassinations:

"We may have to ASSASSINATE some of the people you elect on Nov. 7! This could be your LAST ELECTION CHANCE, to save this Republic... Sorry to have to be so blunt, but the country is in mortal danger from our present government and our liberty is already near dead because of this government. If you are too stupid to turn things around with your vote, there are people out here like me who are willing to turn things around with guns, force and violence. We hope our method does not become necessary."

In March of 2008, when Sean Hannity was confronted with having been previously associated with Turner, Hannity's forceful denials seemed to anger a betrayed Turner:

I was quite disappointed when Sean Hannity at first tried to say he didn't know me and then went on to say that I ran some senate campaign in New Jersey. In fact, Sean Hannity does know me and we were quite friendly a number of years ago.

Turner went on to threaten: "Another big difference is that I am perfectly willing to use force and violence against my enemies while Sean Hannity and others are not. Those using me as a prop to attack Sean Hannity would do well to remember this fact."

A month later, Turner was inciting violence against Paul B. Ash, the Lexington, Massachusetts superintendent of schools:

"I advocate parents using FORCE AND VIOLENCE against Superintendent Paul B. Ash as a method of defending the health and safety of school children presently being endangered through his politically-correct indoctrination into deadly, disease-ridden sodomite lifestyles."

The Courant reports that Turner will be in a New Jersey court today for extradition proceedings.

Ones hope is for the next time the the FBI is on the neighborhood, that they will remember to go knocking doors at Limbaugh, Beck, O'Reilly, Hannity, and the entire cast of FOX News Cartoon Network!

It seems to me that this guy actually is what so many around here accuse Limbaugh, Hannity and Beck of being.

Wingnuts like Hal Turner need guns, otherwise they'd get their asses kicked.

Why isn't the radio station that employs this guy taking a little heat, or his advertisers? I don't mean raiding the place, arresting management and shutting the place down, but enforcing FCC rules, scrutinizing their license agreements, and applying consumer pressure on the organizations that foot the bill for this bile.

So Hannity denies knowing this guy? Reminds me of when, during the 2008 campaign, the McCain camp had that nut job right wing talk show host from Cincinnati precede McCain on stage to whip up the crowd. When he went too far McCain himself said it was wrong. The guy went on his show the next day and called McCain a liar, claiming he was told specifically by the McCain camp to use the type of language that he did.

It's in their genes.

Is there any legal recourse against someone like him if it can be proven that his speech incited someone to carry out one of his directives? The radio station that allows this ought to be held accountable as an accessory as well.

I trluy despise what this man advocates and says. But I can't find an instance where he actuallty violated federal law... not even under the Smith Act...

"Only speech explicitly inciting the forcible overthrow of the government remains punishable under the Smith Act", a Supremem Court Ruling under the !st Amendment.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smith_Act

I don't know yet if there are state laws in NJ making his speech illegal, at this point in my brief search, I think the Capitol Police Chief Michael J. Fallon may have been a bit hasty, it's hard to know until I dig more deeply into NJ's constitution.

He didn't directly threaten the Presidents life, as sorry as I may feel that his words aren't illegal, I am not at all sure this man actually violated any laws. If I am incorrect, I would LOVE to see any and all constitutional statutes siting such.

Could this fall under some of the new hate speech laws?

Gotta do some more digging.

In the mean time, I'm not too sorry the guy was arrested, but I am also unsure if it's constitutional.

I despise hate mongering and violence, I so wish that peeps like him, Hannity, Limp-paw and all would just learn to agree to disagree and provide something worthwhile to the radio waves, hate is never a good thing. In all it's form hate may not be illegal, but it certainly brings nothing good to anyone.

Turner said and I quote:

"If any state attorney, police department or court thinks they're going to get uppity with us about this, I suspect we have enough bullets to put them down, too."

I'm no legal expert but I'm pretty d@mn certain threatening to shoot state attorneys, police officers and court officials is ILLEGAL in ALL 50 states!

Lock him up and throw away the key. And then go after Bill O'Reilly for inciting to violence the man who murdered George Tiller. They've gone too far, mostly because they've never really been challenged by the proper authorities.

One infamous shock jock with really big ratings calls liberalism a mental disorder. Based on this and the daily onslaught of intellectual dishonesty, hate and fear-mongering promulgated by these disreptuable people, just who is really wearing the mental disorder hat? I don't hear any liberals, no matter how radical, advocating assassinations or violence. I truly believe that people like this are sick and suffer from some form of extreme paranoia and delusional form of psychosis. Many say they're just looking for big ratings but at what cost? How can they face themselves in the mirror each morning?

As an aside to the crimes of Hal Turner: Why would any government agency imagine that it had the right to tell the Roman Catholic Church how to manage or mismanage itself? The RCC has been an authoritarian organization for almost 2000 years. Last time I checked, membership in the Church was voluntary. What f foolish legislation would dare cross that line of separation between Church and State? Why would anyone who had ever read the constitution, introduce such legislation?

If you don't like the RCC, it's OK to leave. It is not OK, to pervert the state with delusions that it has the authority to control the internal workings of any church. Hal Turner is a terrible advocate for this cause. He is so disgustingly bigoted that it makes me feel dirty agreeing with him... even when he's right.

It is in direct violation of separation of Church and State, and the mere act of introducing such legislation seems to indicate that there are people making laws that have no knowledge of the Constitution or Bill of Rights.

This guy reminds me of the boss character in movies, where he says "Get 'em, boys!!" as he backs away to safety.

errmmm... because they lobby the government, but pretend that they don't...

all religions try to influence our state and federal laws and governments...

so who ended the so-called separation of church and state?

was it the churches when they started trying to influence law??? Methinks SO...

Roe V Wade comes to mind...

And then we have Focus on the Family and it's strong political lobby... and... the list goes on...

When you asked "why would anyone who ever read the constitution introduce such legislation?", you failed to understand the 1st Amendment...

try reading THIS...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Amendment_to_the_United_States_Constitution

and then THIS:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Establishment_Clause_of_the_First_Amendment

If the Catholics and other churches want to impose influence on our legislators, then they by law need to apply for a lobbyists license... and so would YOU... google it...

and SO, if the Catholic church wants to get in bed with our government, our government can and will impose parameters on how the Church is "organized" ie: board of directors... yakkity yak... Bill 1098

That does not suggest or imply in any way that the government is advocating one religion over another or advocating religion over non-religion, non-religion over religion, which is ALL that is implied or may be inferred from the 1st Amendment.

I am a free speech absolutist. As far as I'm concerned, free speech means being able to say anything no matter who likes it or doesn't, short of yelling "FIRE," in a theater. This creep crosses that line. There is a line of demarcation between stating a political opinion and making terrorist threats. This punk probably doesn't have the guts to back up these threats but he does have the ability to inspire some mentally-marginal assassin to do the horrible things that he can only fantasize. I believe that it a crime. If it isn't it's close enough to the line where he should be forced into court and defend his right to threaten peoples lives.

I suspect that after that trial he will end up in a place where this neighbors will know how to handle a wimp who makes empty threats. His fellow inmates would probably complete Mr. Turner's education on the subject of writing checks with your mouth that your a@@ can't cash. Mischief managed...

I hope charges against Turner are the first in a series of long-deserved legal challenges to the cancer that is radical-Right commentary. Freedom of speech does not include yelling "Fire!" in a theater or inciting violence against others. Limbaugh, like many other Rightwing bloviators, is treading the legal line. Calling Obama the equivalent of Al Qaeda and a President deliberately trying to destroy America is, to my mind, treasonous but apparently still falls under Constitutional protection. My hunch is that Limbaugh's ego is going to send him across that line eventually (like Turner.) I'd love to see the day he is arrested, handcuffed and charged.

Technically it is FALSELY crying "fire" in a crowded theater. You are free to yell "fire" if there actually is one.
