ew.com:

James Franco will no longer deliver the commencement speech at the UCLA College of Letters and Science graduation ceremony on June 12, the university announced today. "I deeply regret not being able to keep my commitment to giving the commencement speech at UCLA's graduation this year," Franco said in statement. "Unfortunately the date conflicts with me needing to be on location to begin pre-production on my next film. I wish everyone in the 2009 class the best of luck in all of their future endeavors."

They don't want Franco because he's not a role model, but they elect to go with a druggie rock star instead? There's someone to really look up to and aspire to be. They can use all their years of college to get use there.

You all don't know what you are talking about! He graduated from UCLA and set a record for taking the most units during a quarter so no one would think he was some Hollywood actor who thought they could slide by. I wish he hadn't bailed on giving the commencement speech.

They could get, like, you know, Tori Spelling. I'm sure she'd be happy to do it.

Does this mean they will once again call on Arianna to bail them out? Doesn't Bill Clinton owe them from last year's cancellation?

Universities often look for high profile individuals or alumni to give commencement speeches at graduation ceremonies. Being a popular actor, James Franco probably fits that criteria. My bet is he's probably didn't really want to give the speech at his alma mater, but perhaps felt obligated, and is relieved to have a conflict as an excuse.

UCLA is one of the world's premiere universities. Why on earth would they want James Franco? to give the graduation speech anyway? I know, from the article that Franco went to UCLA, but who is he? I've never heard of him.
