LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A Kentucky pastor is inviting his flock to bring guns to church to celebrate the Fourth of July and the Second Amendment.

New Bethel Church is welcoming "responsible handgun owners" to wear their firearms inside the church June 27, a Saturday. An ad says there will be a handgun raffle, patriotic music and information on gun safety.

"We're just going to celebrate the upcoming theme of the birth of our nation," said pastor Ken Pagano. "And we're not ashamed to say that there was a strong belief in God and firearms _ without that this country wouldn't be here."

The guns must be unloaded and private security will check visitors at the door, Pagano said.

He said recent church shootings, including the killing Sunday of a late-term abortion provider in Kansas, which he condemned, highlight the need to promote safe gun ownership. The New Bethel Church event was planned months before Dr. George Tiller was shot to death in a Wichita church.

Kentucky allows residents to openly carry guns in public with some restrictions. Gun owners carrying concealed weapons must have state-issued permits and can't take them to schools, jails or bars, among other exceptions.

Pagano's Protestant church, which attracts up to 150 people to Sunday services, is a member of the Assemblies of God. The former Marine and handgun instructor said he expected some backlash, but has heard only a "little bit" of criticism of the gun event.

John Phillips, an Arkansas pastor who was shot twice while leading a service at his former church in 1986, said a house of worship is no place for firearms.

"A church is designated as a safe haven, it's a place of worship," said Phillips, who was shot by a church member's relative for an unknown reason and still has a bullet lodged in his spine. "It is unconscionable to me to think that a church would be a place that you would even want to bring a weapon."

Phillips spoke out against a bill before the Arkansas General Assembly that would have permitted the carrying of guns in that state's churches. The bill failed in February.

Pagano, 50, said some members of his church were concerned that President Obama's administration could restrict gun ownership, and they supported the plan for the event when Pagano asked their opinion.

Marian McClure Taylor, executive director of the Kentucky Council of Churches, an umbrella organization for 11 Christian denominations in Kentucky, said Christian churches are promoters of peace, but "most allow for arms to be taken up under certain conditions."

Taylor said Pagano assured her the event would focus on promoting responsible gun ownership and any proceeds would go to charity.

"Those two commitments are consistent with the high value the Assemblies of God churches place on human life," she said in an e-mail message.

Pagano is encouraging church members to bring a canned good and a friend to the event. He said guns must be unloaded for insurance purposes and safety reasons.

He said the point was not to mix worship with guns, though he may reference some passages from the Bible.

"Firearms can be evil and they can be useful," he said. "We're just trying to promote responsible gun ownership and gun safety."

First of all, critics of the event have been quick to point out that Jesus would probably not be down with bringing weapons to a place of worship. Sure, his entreaties to turn the other cheek don’t quite jibe with the spirit of this event, but what is often forgotten is that Jesus is also supposed to have said, in Matthew 10:

"Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword. For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law. And a man’s foes shall be they of his own household. He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me. He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it."

Personally, I give no credence to either statement. One demands that believers should not stand up for themselves and instead acquiesce to authority. The other requires that followers make their families lower priorities than the demands of the deity...

It's kinda stupid to carry an unloaded handgun. There are better clubs available.

What I am not sure about is the continued attempt in particular by the NRA to
broaden to definition of the 2nd amendment.
Is it population control? Profit for gun manufacturers or just plain insanity on
the part of the religious right. I am guessing it is mostly insanity based fear. For some
reason these people want an excuse to kill people. I guess that is the definition if extremism.

Hide behind the 2nd amendment for any excuse to get off
on the idea of killing someone..

After all the right to bear arms is for the purpose of a state formed militia not for gun nuts to get off...

The abuse of this amendment by violent gun lovin Christians is astounding..

I guess if everyday you live in fear of Armageddon...Sad and pathetic..

I don't know why my post got scrubbed, so I'll try again.

Does "Lock and Load" come before "Our Father" or after "Who art in Heaven?"

If someone reaches in and takes something OUT of the collection plate, who's gonna stop 'em?

I have a nice Bible cover. I guess I need a kevlar one now.

Bringing guns to THIS church is no big deal. They've been performing shotgun weddings for 40+ years.

Who's gonna have the stones to walk out of one of THIS guys sermons?

Yea though I walk through the valley of darkness I fear no evil for I am the most heavily armed sonvavich in the valley

You don't have to worry about fire and brimstone in this church. Worry about grenades and RPG's.

I can't wait till some joker explodes a paper back in the last aisle to see how many parishoners draw down.

New Church Motto: "Pack no heat, get no seat!"

Does the choir (wearing robes) need "concealed carry" permits?

The 6th commandment of the big 10 is: "You shall not kill."

They are 4 simple words. They are not difficult to understand. They mean YOU CAN NOT KILL. Most importantly - at the end of those 4 words is a period, not a comma, not a semi-colon - a PERIOD.

There are not the words: "except" or "unless" or "but" ... there is a full stop PERIOD there, your god made it very simple, it's not rocket science. Guns are not about "turning the other cheek", they are about: revenge, threat, killing and murder. So please explain how the christian finds any type of excuse or exception with bringing an instrument or tool of death to church.

"Religion is based, I think, primarily and mainly upon fear. It is partly the terror of the unknown and partly, as I have said, the wish to feel that you have a kind of elder brother who will stand by you in all your troubles and disputes. Fear is the basis of the whole thing - fear of the mysterious, fear of defeat, fear of death. Fear is the parent of cruelty, and therefore it is no wonder if cruelty and religion have gone hand in hand.” -- Bertrand Russell (Why I Am Not a Christian)

Most modern bibles translate this text as: "You shall not commit murder."
Obviously there are multiple instances in Scripture where God ordered his people to kill their enemies.

Why are they armed? Hmmm...Are they worried that annoying Jesus might come by talking more of that turn the other cheek stuff and more of that sermon on the mount mushiness? I guess they want to be ready if He wants to pull any of that clearing the temple stuff again!

if people don't want to attend the service they don't have to. The pastor wants to have lessons on weapons safety and this is best done with... weapons!

Next he'd ask you to bring your mistress along with your wife or the "pet" goat, so long as he could get his attendance up! Organized religion is taking its last breath, and for the better!
