PARIS — Not since the Kennedy era has an American first lady _ and in tow, her presidential husband _ been so eagerly awaited in Paris.

Will they hobnob with their French counterparts _ President Nicolas Sarkozy and his wife, former model Carla Bruni-Sarkozy _ as the Kennedys did with the de Gaulles during their mythic 1961 visit? Or will they cut loose, Clinton-style, for a spontaneous sightseeing session?

Officials on both sides of the Atlantic were short on specifics about the American first couple's upcoming weekend in the City of Light.

The White House has only spoken openly about the D-Day commemorations in Normandy.

But French newspapers have speculated the Obamas _ and possibly their daughters, Sasha and Malia _ will dine atop the Eiffel Tower.

Located on the second level of the 1,024-foot-tall tower, the Jules Verne restaurant boasts commanding views over Paris and a menu by one of the world's most celebrated chefs, Alain Ducasse. A restaurant spokeswoman declined to comment on the possibility the Obamas would dine there, citing client privacy.

The French press is also atwitter over whether there will be a rematch of the "duel of charm" that pitted Michelle Obama in a glamor contest against Bruni-Sarkozy during the Obamas' first official visit to France in April.

That fashion face-off, on the sidelines of a NATO summit in the French border city of Strasbourg, was widely considered a tie, with both first ladies' wardrobes garnering praise by international observers.

Story continues below

It's still not clear whether Mrs. Obama and Bruni-Sarkozy, an Italian-born supermodel-turned-singer, will meet up this time around, but observers were already speculating about what each might wear for such an occasion.

Paris-based author and fashion critic Dana Thomas said Michelle-watchers can rest assured the first lady has packed just the right looks for the trip.

"Michelle scored big points with the French last week when she wore an Azzedeine Alaia dress," said Thomas, referring to the Tunisian-born, Paris-based designer known for his slinky dresses. "She's really clever in embracing French designers," as well as the young American designers she champions.

Michelle Obama's elegant personal style and natural charm have won her comparisons with Jackie Kennedy, who captured France's heart when she and President John F. Kennedy made a celebrated official visit to France in 1961.

Then, people lined the streets to catch a glimpse of Jackie Kennedy _ who had French roots and a Sorbonne education and spoke the language of Moliere, albeit with an American accent _ as she and her husband were whisked to luncheons and gala dinners hosted by France's leader, Charles de Gaulle.

The French public was so enamored that the president referred to himself as "the man who accompanied Jackie Kennedy to Paris."

Like Jackie Kennedy, "Mrs. Obama is exactly the kind of American woman the French adore: a woman who never lost her femininity, who's smart and dynamic and fabulous in her own right," Thomas said.

More than 30 years after the Kennedys, Bill and Hillary Clinton also left their mark on Paris.

During their 1994 visit, the pair slipped out of the U.S. ambassador's residence for an unannounced visit to the Notre Dame, where Bill posed for a snapshot with schoolchildren, and then took a midnight stroll along the River Seine.

After their walk on the Pont des Arts, the Clintons rode in their 20-car motorcade to the Louvre for a private visit to France's showcase museum. Their guides for the midnight tour? Then-President Francois Mitterrand and world-famous architect I.M. Pei.

In an interview ahead of the Paris trip, Obama praised France, saying the American people love all things Gallic.

Asked what he liked about the country, Obama responded, "Let's see, we have the food, we have Paris, we got the south of France, Provence, the wine."

Obama said he had traveled through France during his college days and that a return trip to the southeastern region of Provence was long overdue, though he acknowledged his French was rusty.

"I studied it in high school and I just forgot it," he said, adding "Michelle, I think she speaks a little French."

"Merci beaucoup," he said, concluding Tuesday's 10-minute-long interview on I-Tele and Canal Plus television channels.

MSNBC reported a few minutes ago that the Obamas will reimburse the costs of the girls travel. Do presidents usually reimburse the government when their children travel with them?

It seems every politician with poor popularity want to be next to Obama...

What we will see next?
Obama with Gordon Brown?
Obama with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad?

It seems to me that Obama wanted to come to France. No one invited him strictly speaking.

He was invited - by Sarkozy. They are scheduled to take part in D-Day Anniversary ceremonies tomorrow, with Prince Charles. Obama's great-uncle will also be present.

Come on, we all know that for some people there is just no winning. If the Obamas didn't make these traditional visits to other nations, they would be 'ignoring important foreign policy'. If they went and didn't dress up or go out ( let's face it, that is fairly impossible for the leader of any country) they would be 'tacky and bad mannered' for wearing jeans.

They are our FIRST FAMILY. Have some pride in your country, trolls! I want them to look great and made good relationships with other nations AND have a great time. There is no reason they can't do all those things!!

Whatever they'll be wearing, it won't be hijabs. Speaking of which, Obama has some splaining to do for his speech: "That is why the U.S. government has gone to court to protect the right of women and girls to wear the hijab, and to punish those who would deny it." Did he mean France? And if not, who? France does deny the "right" to wear a hijab to school - to the relief of tens of thousands of Muslim girls who would otherwise be forced by their families to cover their hair and perhaps also their faces. Who's side was Obama on when he said that? Saudi Arabia's?

Last I heard, it was organizations like Al Qaeda which promised to punish France for denying Muslim families the "right" to force the hijab on their unwilling daughters.

Whatever to you but not to the French - the muslim forums are quite exited against tonight about the issue of the veil and French posters are not complimentng Obama on his interference. He was also quite unpopular when he declared during his trip to Turkey that the EU should integrate them - which is like telling the US that they should integrate Mexico, shore up itseconomy, open all borders and let them vote your laws...
Funny how the American press doesn't report on that

You heard wrong, sparky. France would not allow Muslim girls to wear headscarves to school. IMO, that's wrong.

President Obama correctly pointed out that lack of an education was more demeaning to women than wearing or not wearing hijab. What you don't seem to realize is that it should be a woman's choice whether to wear a hijab or not.

We're talking school-age muslims here, teenagers, who have no choice but to follow the increasingly extremist behaviours in their communities. If the veil was allowed at school in some place they would have to wear it, not because their families would force them but the thugs in their neighbourhoods who brand them as sl*ts if they don't obey.

Education is obligatory in France so if the kids want to wear the hijab they still have to learn, be homeschooled or go to muslim schools, but the public school system stays free of religion (even crucifix are not allowed)

I worry that a fabulous trip to Paris may not send the right message during these tough times. Much needs attending to right here at home. This sort of trip is way out of reach for most Americans right now.

PSSSSSST: The First Family is not "most Americans." That's why they get to live in the WH, fly on Air Force One and travel in a presidential motorcade.

Silly Wabbit.

A fabulous trip to Paris is way out of reach for many regardless of the time. Most Americans will never fly on AF1 and most will never have the responsibilities and duties of President and 1st Lady.

How can diplomacy send the wrong message? How can honoring the American dead from WWII send the wrong message.

Obama is not the only worker bee in his administration. People are still working while he is gone and HE is still working as well. Did you notice the new ambassadors appointed today? Foreign policy is also part of his job.

Get a grip.

Sadly............a fabulous trip to Paris, was well with in the reach of average American Citizens, when I was growing up.
Anyone who is still blaming the Unions, or Welfare Mothers, for our present economic insufficiency or believes if you work hard you too can be rich, .....would do well to study it a bit, and learn what is REALLY going on.
American School teachers, used to go to Europe regularly, armed with Fedor's Europe on $5.00 a Day! It also expanded their knowledge, making them better teachers.
Nowadays they can't afford it so they stay home and start affairs with their 13 year old students instead!

It would be nice if the AP did a little more fact checking, especially about a quotation that is so widely known. It was the crowds in Paris who referred to the First Lady by her nickname, screaming, "Jacqui!" everywhere she went.

What President Kennedy actually said was, "I am the man who accompanied Jacqueline Kennedy to Paris -- and I have enjoyed it."

I certainly could not have foretold the popularity of our first family on the international stage. Remember in the early days of Mr. Obama's election when detractors doubted his acceptance internationally because of his skin color? I suppose his detractors have to scrap that theory along with Michelle's "angry black woman persona" The virtual barrier that prevents the conservative extremists from unleashing their race-inspired hate must rival that of the Boulder Dam.

Amazingly, we so often find style immaterial compared to competence, yet the world at large appears to want its leaders to posess some glamour in addition to their abilities. A little charisma and some good taste appear to be making great strides in restoring our nation's image abroad. Could this mean that this vibrant family accurately represent most of us in America? I certainly find I have more in common with the Obamas than their predecessors.

I could remember back in the fifties, it was the Europeans who welcome the blacks, while America $ hit on them, and today President Obama is going through the same mess.

I'm so excited for the Obama's and America right now...countries around the world actually WANT the American President to visit them and are eager to be SEEN with them. This is a great accomplishment in and of itself as the U.S. has been something akin to an albatross and basically shunned if only behind closed doors, the sentiment was there.
