Two male Humboldt penguins cautiously guards the entrence to their cave in the "Zoo am Meer" zoological park in Bremerhaven, northern Germany, on Wednesday, June 3, 2009, where they are fostering a six weeks old penguin chick. After a penguin egg had been abandoned by its biological parents, it was placed in the male penguins' nest, who then adopted and hatched it. The gender of the penguin chick has not yet been determined. Bremerhaven zoo veterinarian Schoene said the male birds, named Z and Vielpunkt, are one of three same-sex pairs among the zoo's 20 Humboldt penguins that have attempted to mate. BERLIN — A German zoo says a pair of gay male penguins are raising a chick from an egg abandoned by its parents.

Bremerhaven zoo veterinarian Joachim Schoene says the egg was placed in the male penguins' nest after its parents rejected it in late April. The males incubated it for some 30 days before it hatched and have continued to care for it. The chick's gender is not yet known.

Schoene said the male birds, named Z and Vielpunkt, are one of three same-sex pairs among the zoo's 20 Humboldt penguins that have attempted to mate.

Homosexual behavior has been documented in many animal species.

The zoo said in a statement on its Web site Thursday that "sex and coupling in our world don't always have something to do with reproduction."

Don't tell HRC they will find a way to sell away the poor penguins rights for some political pandering.

This is so sweet. And it speaks volumes about how homosexuality is not only "normal" in animals, but that it's also normal for gay couples to adopt and raise children.

It almost makes me think penguins are smarter than people.

Penguins must be smarter than some people, I don't think there are any right wing extremist penguins who bash gay penguins and deny them their rights.

Homosexuality in animals is a contrived myth. Many, if not all male animals, attempt to mount other animals, whether for practice, or because of the impulse from being in heat. To separate homosexuality from that reality, there must be consciousness involved. Animals lack such consciousness. Lastly, it serves homosexuals interest to condition animals to perform such acts that are mindless acts to animals. Everyone knows that is how animals are trained to perform. That insistence on brainwashing the masses by devious rationalizations and trickery is what is more objectionable than the fact of homosexuality itself. It is a fact that one does what one is. Animals are one thing and homosexuals are another and ne'er the twain shall meet without added conniving.

Your tin foil hat is picking up weird signals today...methinks you dost protest too much. And animals don't have consciousness?? Where on earth did you dream that fiction up?

"Homosexuality in animals is a contrived myth."

Actually, your statement is a "contrived myth" (as well as redundant). My God, you people are bad writers.

from article on Wikipedia:

"Homosexual behavior in animals refers to the documented evidence of homosexual, bisexual and transgender behavior in non-human animals. Such behaviors include sex, courtship, affection, pair bonding, and parenting. Homosexual and bisexual behavior are widespread in the animal kingdom: a 1999 review by researcher Bruce Bagemihl shows that homosexual behavior, has been observed in close to 1500 species, ranging from primates to gut worms, and is well documented for 500 of them."

You can have your own opinion, Missy, but you can't have your own science.

Incorrect. Homosexual behavior (and couplings) exist in hundreds of species in nature, from butterflies to apes. FYI, homosexuals, aka humans, are animals. Enjoy.

So let me get this straight (no pun intended). The hetero couple abandons their child, and the gay couple accept it and raise it. Speaks volumes.

The same thing happened with those two penguins in a same-sex coupling in the States... they were given an egg and raised it. The penguin they raised is now like... two and mating with some guy! Let's hope she has kids soon... baby penguins are awesome.

"How do you know penguins lack "sentient reasoning to choose a lifestyle"?"

Because they are penguins, and like most other animals, they rely mainly on instinct.

"They are penguins, and like most other animals, they rely maily on instinct"

Frankly, this makes no sense to me. They have brains, like humans do. Human brains motivate behavior by using emotions. We care for our children becuase we "love them". That is, our brains encourage evolutionarily successful behavior (like caring for children) with the use of emotion. WHAT BASIS do we have to assume that any other animals are different?

We don't know what animals think or why they do what they do. It's all guesswork. It could be mere "instinct", or it could be "emotion". What basis do you have for assuming that it is mere instinct? If the brains are similar, and all animals DO have similar brains (because all animals evolved from the same ancestors), then one might suppose that the brains work in the same way. And one of those "same ways" is to motivate behavior by the use of emotion.
