National Review Perplexingly Depicts Sotomayor As Asian

Good gravy, have you all seen the cover that the good people from the Journal of Lowered Expectations known as the National Review have put together? Courtesy of Talking Points Memo's Brian Beutler, BEHOLD!

Yes. It seems that the National Review has confused their ethnic stereotypes, or their religions, or maybe they just wanted some sort of two-fer, because their "Wise Latina" cover story presents Sotomayor as an Asian, in some sort of Buddhist pose.

Anyway, the good news is this will surely provide a excellent P.R. opportunity to Puerto Rico's little talked-about Buddhist community.

Puerto Rico is an island of mixed cultures. It was inhabited by the Taino natives when Christopher Columbus "discovered" it in 1493. The Spanish colonized it and after almost destroying the entire Taino population (they took the women as wives) brought in slaves from West Africa. So the Puerto Rican people have the blood of the indigenous people of the Caribbean, Europeans (Spanish, Dutch, French to name of few), and also West Africa. According to the Bering Strait theory all the native cultures in the Americas originated from Asia. I don' t think Sonia Sotomayor is the least bit insulted by this depiction of her as "The Wise Latina".

Where did you learn that Puerto Ricans are all "mixed?" A great number of them are whiter than Paris Hilton. The island is extremely color conscious.

I usually enjoy Jason's columns, but I think he's missing the point here. Anyone who is caricatured as Buddha would be portrayed as Asian. For example, if it were Obama, he would have the exaggerated slanted eyes. If it were Hillary, she would have them. If it were Newt, he would have them. And so on, and so on. And in this instance, Sotomayer has them. I'm certainly not defending NR. They could very well have meant this to be insulting, but I fail to see how this picture is as an ethnic stereotype.

So, here's a thought why bother using a caricature at all - why not just have a picture of Sotomayor as is and then the story. Oh, yeah I forgot, if you do that then you might not have enough people curious about the picture to pick up the magazine. Yeah, that's what they were teaching in journalism school use an offensive picture of someone to get your story across. I must have missed class that day.
