Kevin Stevenson, a Republican spokesperson from Wisconsin who was booted from his job after criticizing Rush Limbaugh, went on MSNBC Friday to discuss his fall from GOP grace.

"I've been writing commentaries for the "Daily Herald" since October of 2008 for the election. And I wrote a commentary that included Rush Limbaugh, mentioning that we as Republicans need to start coming together," said Stevenson, former spokesman for the Marathon County Republicans. "And it's my opinion that Rush has a very large audience and can be influential, but he is not the leader of the party and he is an entertainer. And he needs to be considered as an entertainer."

Stevenson said the proposal to eliminate his position from a group of county party members "was a surprise to everybody."

"[T]hey didn't like what I said about Rush, and they had tied that into some other things and it basically came up that, well, you're a moderate. Yes, I am a Republican who has moderate views on social issues. And they said, we can't allow that. You can't write for us if you're not with us."

So how does Stevenson feel about the Republican party now? At first he called himself an "invalid Republican," then modified: "I'm an inactive member of the Republican party of Marathon County ... I'm inactive now." But as far as his beliefs, he said, "I am still a Republican.

The Republican Party is inactive, at least when it comes to any new ideas to advance the position of the State of the Union.

You can't be "the party of NO" and expect to be considered active or relevant.

As we used to say in the real world: "Lead, Follow or Get Out of the Way." Any political party that chooses Rush Limbaugh for it's leader is in line with the lemmings. I guess it's not a good idea to stand in front of that tank... or is it just a Hummer.

Got to admire Limbaugh though. He's making $400,000,000 this year in a terrible global economic downturn. P.T. Barnum would be proud. Who would have thought that after over 200 years of free public education, in an age of mass media and internet fact-checking that there would be so many fools remaining to be taken by this intellectually light-weight, illogical, con man. Such is the harvest of ignorance in the land of the free... Will the sad clown with a golden microphone continue to make bank on the backs of the gullible? We'll see...

Do you know, i don't think it is fair to judge all republicans (the party of Abraham Lincoln, remember?) for what the neocons have stood for in the past few years... The southern democrats of the 1930s-1960s were the supporters of american apartheid, far more than the republicans. There are still economic, social and suspicious of big government conservatives who do not deserve to be painted as race haters, or even Rush acolytes. Here in the west (ok, not alaska, which is undeniably western) - there are many progressive republicans who support both social tolerance and fiscal responsibility. Some of my acquaintances and friends who identify as republicans also still believe that conservation is fundamentally a conservative principle as well. America is at its best when we have a healthy debate regarding the fundamental issues of the day... and without republican moderates (or even conservative republicans who haven't been hijacked by the "moral majority" virus).. we are more at risk for exactly the type of excesses and unconstitutional actions we have struggled against in the past 8 years. I for one am worried about the disowning of the rational in the republican party.

I am tired of hearing how some Republicans are different. I am from the South and I would tell every Republican who believes they are different that their party sold their soul to the devil and the devil has came back to get his due.

No longer can they hide and say, Oh that doesn't represent me. Yes it does. Either leave your party, or adimit who the leaders are and stand with them.

If Obama had picked Palin (or the equivalent) I would have gone outside after the VP debate and ripped my sign out of the ground.

This argument doesn't wash anymore.

But the national face of the republican party cannot be assumed to represent all republicans, anymore than some of the spineless and corrupt democratic leadership could have legitimately been assumed to represent me! Many republican moderates are secretly hoping for open primaries precisely to wrest away power from the irrational, medieval wing-nut bigots who have hijacked their party - really! Judging them as all the same misses the whole point (just as assuming that every catholic responded to President Obama speaking at Notre Dame would have missed the tremendous tensions within that church that his engagement triggered). Not all republicans are demons, just as not all democrats are angels... Until the controlling majority of democrats in congress decide to open a serious investigation of torture and other crimes by the previous administration, we are living in a glass house throwing stones.

The GOP is no longer the party of Lincoln. Hasn't been for years. Back then, the repubs stood for a strong central government. They fought for the Union, tokeep it together. Now,they are for states rights, more than the union. Some, like in Texas, advocate succession since they don't like the new administration. Lincoln used war agasint the South as a last resort, not a pre-emptive strike. Lincoln would not be at home in today's GOP. His quote of " a house divided cannot stand" would refer more to today's republican party.
