He didn't being her anything? (Just JOKING!!!)

Seriously, incrdibly moving--and to bring politics into this is pretty vile. If you can't just take in this sweet moment without interjecting political negativity, regardless of the side you're on, you've got to step back and think about that.

How many times have we seen this scene played out on TV?
Four? Five?
It was touching the first time. Now it's obviously done for camera face-time.

This is quite touching. Especially being the daughter of someone who has been active duty military for 21 years. My dad actually came home from a deployment the day of my prom, and surprised me as I was at dinner with my date before prom. My reaction was quite similar, though I was a junior in high school.

The last one had me crying halfway through. What class the Canadians show toward their war dead. And as for the second video, if I could write what I truly feel, you all would never see it.

Yeah, can't wait until Hallmark makes a commercial out of them, or maybe some bank or stockbroker firm.

Or maybe we can save them up and use them for the next war.

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't President Obama just approve sending more troops to Afghanistan?

I guess what I'm saying is that being separated from one another is part and parcel of belonging to a military family. It's terribly hard on these families. I doubt most military families would say that somehow, it was easier being separated when Presidents Kennedy and Johnson (two presidents who were on our side of the aisle) sent soldiers to Vietnam.

I'm thrilled this little girl's daddy was able to come home safe.

Look:

We have to destroy Osama bin-Laden. We must. We have to destroy the bogey man the Republicans kept in front of us for 7 years.

Not catching Osama bin-Laden was part of the Bush Junta strategy ... they needed him alive to keep Americans scared. September 11 attacks? Who cares? Let's go against Iraq before the economic sanctions are lifted!

You missed the point. Knee-jerk conservatives claim to be all for the troops, but they aren't. It's empty rhetoric. In the end they're mostly all flag-huggers who get off on other people's loved ones going off to fight. And when something like this comes up, they make fun of it, because they are too immature to handle it.

You must not know your history...

-John F. Kennedy (D) escalated our involvement in the Vietnam:
Over 8 million servicemen and women had served. EIGHT MILLION. Over 58,000 were killed and nearly 2,000 missing.

-Woodrow Wilson (D) declared war on Germany and marked our entrance into World War I:
The USA suffered nearly 117,000 casualties.

-Franklin D. Roosevelt (D) declared war on Japan after Japan bombed Pearl Harbor:
The US suffered nearly 417,000 casualties in World War II.

-Harry S. Truman (D) led the United States into a proxy war against Communist ideals (Soviet Union) via North Korea:
The USA lost approximately 390,000 service members in the Korean conflict.

-William Jefferson Clinton (D) appointed use of the US military to stop the bloodshed in Yugoslavia which was brokered by NATO. Supposedly there was genocide taking place in Yugoslavia, which was found to be untrue after the war had ended. The USA was never attacked and none of its interests were in jeopardy.

The same special interests own the Republicans and Democrats... It's the same garbage.

World War I - Woodrow Wilson - Democrat
World War II - FDR - Democrat
Korean War - Truman - Democrat
Bay of Pigs - Kennedy - Democrat
Vietnam War - LBJ - Democrat
Grenada - Reagan - Republican
Persian Gulf War - Bush - Republican
Bosnia and Herzegovina - Clinton - Democrat
War on Terror - Bush - Republican

So 6 to 3, Democrats are the WINNERS!!!

However, two wrongs don't make a right. The Republicans are just as wrong and immoral as the Democrats, but don't be fooled into believing that the Democrats are the "Peace" party...

I cannot even believe you throw WW1 and 2 into the same list as the "war on terror." Wow. And Bosnia and Herzegovina??! Those were small police actions. This is specifically about Iraq. We should have never gone into that mess, but we were all lied to by people expected to hold higher standards because the presidency of the U.S. is SUPPOSED to imply trust.

Let us not even consider the fact that the parties change so much in 20 years to be nearly unrecognizable. According to your list there, throw in War of 1812, war with mexico in the 19th century, the Civil War, any other time troops were ever used even if there were no casualties.

I can't help but think of how traumatic it would be to be separated from my two little girls for a year, and I also can't help but think of all the children who will never see their mommies or daddies again because of this ill-conceived, Imperialist adventure.

Bring the all home . . . NOW. Have them come back with Stephen Colbert at the end of next week.

I find these "surprises" cruel beyond words. Having first-hand experience (on multiple occasions) in welcoming home a member of the military ~and watching that member's children do the same~ I can tell you the reunion is deeply, deeply, deeply emotional and about as personal as it can get. The thoughts, love, joy, and sheer relief swirling around, are incredible...they should be fully protected and fully respected. Filming for distribution these reunions is voyeurism at its worst.

Film a kid being surprised with a puppy on their birthday, film a spouse being surprised with a new car, film a marriage proposal at Yankee stadium, film just about anything you want and put it on the 'net and/or airwaves, but for heaven's sake, quit intruding into something as personal, as heart-wrenching, and as intimate, as a (specific/single) military family reuniting. It exploits and dishonors the service member and their family members...and trashes the respect due both in recognition of the service and sacrifice they've all made.

Turning a private moment of reunion into a mass-distribution vehicle so others can "ooo" and "ahhh" over the reaction(s) of that moment, is cruel and uncalled for. There is *nothing* "cute" about 'ambushing' a military spouse or child in this manner. It stinks.

When these are put up on youtube or other public sites voluntarily or when they inform and invite media -- talk to the families as you are preaching to the wrong choir.

You obviously know nothing about film strategy. The only one surprised was the little girl. Everything else was set up. Why else would there be cameras already present in the room? Notice also that what appears to be the girl's mother and younger sibling entered with the returning soldier. No, this was not a total surprise, except for the little girl, and I doubt seriously she was worried about being filmed.

You may have your opinion, you are entitled to it. For myself, after an 8-year blackout of any images or video of anything that humanizes the troops and the war, I am grateful for images like these. It validates what we all know to be true and what some families have experienced firsthand. It pierces whatever callousness people may have about the war. Specifically, the neocons who hold themselves above military service (no one in the Bush administration save the generals who conducted the war has any kind of military record. You can judge for yourself if GW's reserve time qualifies.) but have no problem with "surges".

As for the Afghanistan deployment, if GW had followed he true course of tracking down Bin Laden, a) there's a better chance the war would be over by now and b) there is also a better chance less lives would have lost on both the civilian and military sides.

Just my 2 cents.

In my part of the country, these 'ambushes' have been aired for well over 6 years ~ 'ambushes' of both military children and spouses.

For the neo-cons, it affirms that all is hunky-dory...daddy, mommy, son, daughter, brother, sister, husband, wife, boyfriend, girlfriend, go to war and come home just fine.

For those who see for what it is the travesty of what Bush led the nation into in the first place, these 'ambushes' do nothing to erase the fact of the thousands dead; they merely divert with a feel-good: “aw, someone came home alive, isn't that nice.”

Filming for distribution a military child or spouse at the moment of a reunion with the service member is cruel; it exploits their emotions at a most vulnerable time.

Quit trying to fancy it up to excuse it. It is NOT cute and it is NOT anything *other than* exploitative ... no matter *who* is “in on it.”

Try putting yourself in the shoes of the person 'ambushed' - doesn't feel so good to have your rawest emotions gawked at by thousands, if not millions, of complete strangers, does it?
Think on it a bit...
