I can't help but think of the kid watching this reunion who's own parent came home in a box. My thoughts and prayers are with them everytime one of these happy reunions is shown. I lost a cousin in Vietnam, and the sound of his mother's sobs echoes in my ears still. Perhaps the reporters could make a brief comment in praise of the ones who didn't return to of tears of joy before showing the clips.

Bring them all home, please. There are lots of little girls an boys that need their Mommies and Daddy's home with them.

We see very few of these "surprise" events...but it should give us insight into the damage these long tours do to children. I can imagine the lonliness of a child who has bonded with a Daddy or Mommy and then have them snatched away. (I don't even want to think about those who parent won't return). We need to pay attention to these children.

as a VA psychologist, i can only hope that powerful moments of healing and bonding like this are taking place 10,000 times over in the next month with returning vets and their children old enough to realize and anguish over the peril their moms and dads are under when deployed.... a reciprocal healing....

Why does it have to be in front of a camera? I would prefer to see my father the moment his feet hit the ground, not several hours later in a contrived 'gotcha' moment.

I can appreciate what you're saying and it depends on the family. I do think however that moments like these remind us the human element and in showing it, we can appreciate the cost of war.

Who says Dad didn't surprise Mom earlier, that you just didn't see?

Tabloid TV...I mean the Today Show finally did a story worthwhile.

"Am I the only person who's kind of tired of all the exploitation of kids for emotional response on TV?"

In this case, it's not exploitation, but a newsworthy demonstration of the effect on children who's parents are sent into conflict, then thankfully coming home alive and well.

Well, it's back to the bathroom to reapply my eye make-up. These clips NEVER get old. I am very happy for his safe return and for his family. God bless their family.

The countless crying kids reunited with parents from the war, OctoMom, Jon and Kate and their 5 year-old meal tickets...

Yes you are.
I don't care about J&K or octomom but this is the one of human faces of the war.
You probably supported the war 100%. And I'll wager you're anti choice.

Um no... I'm very anti-war and very pro-choice. Oh and gay. And married to my husband for 17 years. I think that putting kids on TV to entertain us is kinda creepy unless they're actually actors and dancers and WANT to be on TV.

yup, you're the only person indeed. to a more decent, sensitive person, octomom, kate and that guy, cannot be compared to these soldiers being united with their children after a year or two of separation, absolutely, positively, night and day comparison. these soldiers did not ask to be separated from their families. nor did their children from their soldier parents.

i'd suggest you stop watching the faux news channel and the rushos and newties. before i forget, the bohners of your party.

No, you are not. It is a cruel "gotcha" moment. It is so contrived. Everyone knows the father is home except the little girl. The camera crews, the mother and the school all know before the little girl. It is a cruel surprise.

This was a joyous surprise. A "cruel surprise" would be carrying her beloved dad into the classroom in a flag-draped coffin.

Tenich, you're the type of person who majors in social work and demands that children like this be taken away from their cruel parents for playing such a cruel joke. Please, get a life.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:16 PM on 06/05/2009

Yes, it was a surprise for this little girl. It was probably kept a surprise for a very good reason, planes get delayed. Which would be more cruel, a surprise at school or being told her father was coming home one day only to have his plane delayed 2 days by storms?

to try to compare this to a mentally disturbed woman and a dissolving marriage playing out on TV for cash is the one of the most obscene and plain old STU.PID things I have seen for a while.

Why? We're watching a child who didn't agree to be the "feel good" story of the day on the Today Show. She was set up to have a big reaction without her knowing about it and us not knowing what the reaction would be.

I think it's kinda smarmy.

Did she at least see the video and decide to allow it to be broadcast? Sign a waiver? Did she really understand that she'll now have that video of a moment (that should be private) trucked out on TV for years as some "feel good" piece about the war?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:44 PM on 06/05/2009

These kind of videos are really touching...it is very difficult for the kids to have their parents away for such extended periods and you can see the raw emotion on their faces...I am so glad she is able to spend some much needed time with her Dad.

This is the one and only beautiful moment(s) of this war! Thank you so much for giving your Daddy to protect so many people in such difficult times. We know you miss him, and let us hope all you children having to go through this loneliness with fear can go forward in happiness.
