ft.com:

Apple plans to introduce a cheaper version of its popular iPhone as soon as Monday, in a move that could dramatically increase the company's share of the market for web-surfing devices, people familiar with the initiative said on Thursday.

Analysts said that the company wanted to show off either a $149 phone or a $99 phone, down from the current low end of $199 and still subsidised in exchange for an AT&T communications service contract.

On the Computer, Engadget, Cnet. All the computer geek blogs, most of the people are having a great response to Palm pre. Maybe there in tune with what it can do. On Huffpo, people seem very sceptical. Iphone is a great phone. But it is not the only phone. Palm Pre is sold out where I live. One of my Iphone friends went to see if he would like the Palm Pre. He tried it out. He said it can do exactly the same as Iphone and then some-such as multitasking. Imagine talking to your buddy on the phone and looking for the restaurant or movie at the same time and booking a reservation or buying a ticket, and plus sending a map directions AT THE SAME TIME. The palm was built around the user friendliness.

Everybody knows that the monthly plan is where they getcha, making the unit price more or less irrelevant.

You really should wait for a press release from Apple. Here is a link to their RSS feed images.apple.com/main/rss/hotnews/pr.rss/pr.rss

iPhone Nano rumors have been on the web for a couple of years now. To make it smaller and cheaper they will have to sacrifice something like the WiFi capabilities. Some people may not like the tradeoff.

Now how about an iPhone that works on the T-Mobile network?

It does. Unlock it.

I thought that there was a law that said that companies cannot prohibit you from unlocking phones.

The problem was never so much the price of the phone I feel though it was pricey. The problem is how much the plan cost. The lowest you can get it down to is $70 a month for one person. The data plan is a mandatory $30. You can't simply have a voice plan and just use the features on the iphone. It's all or nothing.

$70 a month?...that's $15 more than my monthly electric bill. Madness!

Turn's out the iPhone didn't revolutionize computing as we know it, but it did set the bar higher for handheld conversation pieces.

Dear Raul Garcia,

Where to begin? The creation of the iPhone has generated massive interest in the computing industry in developing new tools and applications that have made interpersonal and intermachine communications more exciting than they have ever been. There are developer and user conferences where the excitement level is generally high, and where enthusiastic crowds interact in new and creative ways.

Stick to what you know, and stay away from what you don't.

I would love to purchase an IPhone, but only if a different carrier like Verizon, is associated with it.

Absolutely right. I had AT&T right when they bought Cingular, and they went to hell in a hand basket as far as service and coverage went.

Apple could offer me the iPhone for FREE and I would not take it on AT&T's network.

me too! I'd also like to see a more ROBUST i-Phone (for example, the way Panasonic makes "Toughbook" computers, or Casio makes "G-Shock" watches), and (while I'm dreaming out loud) a nice little case that would flip open (lenthwise) to reveal a good, large keyboard.

- but for now (having had a bad run-in with ATT) all I can do is watch teenage gals & middle-age soccer-moms alike run circles around me in the "handset communicator" info age!

I don't mind paying more for an earlier version of the iPhone. Demand was higher, supply was lower, technology was more expensive, etc. What I do object to is AT&T saying they are moving toward variable pricing for data use. I am already paying a graduated, set monthly price for the privilege of unlimited data use. If they begin metering me - I will go back to a traditional cell phone. Bad move for AT&T.

I don't think they are going to scrap the unlimited usage of data, but instead offer a lower price for lighter users. Right now its a one size fit all approach.

The iPhone is great, but AT&T is getting ridiculous in their pricing. They used to give you, with the original iPhone, 200 text messages WITHIN the extra $20 you paid for unlimited data, but now they charge an extra $5 for that same feature and that is in addition to charging $30 extra for the 3G.

All you people wanting iPhones, consider getting one WITHOUT the AT&T contract, even if it costs more. I pay for a two year contract $78 a month, without the text messaging. That comes to a total of $1,872 over the two year period. I used to pay $39.95 a month before the iPhone, or $960 over two years. This Apple/AT&T monopoly is allowing them both to gouge customers.

I would like to pay less for my service for my iPhone, but AT&T is just about as ridiculous in pricing as the cable TV services.

If Apple does offer a $99 or even a $149 iPhone then that could greatly impact sales of the Pre. Not mention that media would leap on the story and pretty much ignore the Pre.

Apple rarely has closeout sales, but it is possible that these price rumors are for the current 8 and 16 GB iPhones.

C'est la vie

Read the article...and the other blogs. And wait until WWDF when it's expected that new phones will be introduced (faster proc.) up to 32MB, and new data plans/pricing *may* be announced.
