NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Handguns will soon be allowed in bars and restaurants in Tennessee under a new law passed by state legislators who voted to override the governor's veto.

The legislation that takes effect July 14 retains an existing ban on consuming alcohol while carrying a handgun, and restaurant owners can still opt to ban weapons from their establishments.

Thirty-seven other states have similar laws.

The state Senate voted 21-9 on Thursday against Democratic Gov. Phil Bredesen's veto, a day after the House also voted 69-27 to override.

They overrode critics, including Bredesen, who said it's a bad idea to have guns and alcohol in close proximity.

Democratic Sen. Doug Jackson, the main sponsor of the bill, said state Safety Department records show handgun permit holders in Tennessee are responsible.

Of the roughly 218,000 handgun permit holders in Tennessee, 278 had their permits revoked last year, records show. Since 2005, state records shows nearly 1,200 people have lost their permits.

Revocations are issued for felony convictions, while permits can be suspended for pending criminal charges or for court orders of protection.

Story continues below

Sen. Andy Berke, D-Chattanooga, was the only senator to speak against overriding the veto Thursday.

"I believe that we should follow the governor and rethink what we have done," he said.

The law, which was supported by the National Rifle Association, has been successful in other states, its chief lobbyist said.

"Of those 37 states, not one state has attempted to repeal or amend those statutes because they've been successful," Chris Cox said.

Bredesen spokeswoman Lydia Lenker said after Wednesday's House vote that the Democratic governor expected an override when he vetoed the legislation last week.

Following Thursday's Senate vote, Bredesen, who is a gun owner and hunter, reiterated his stance to reporters.

"I still think I'm right," he said. "I still think that guns in bars is a very bad idea. It's an invitation to a disaster."

Hmmm...maybe they should also allow bars at firing ranges. Nothing like taking a break for a cold one or three and a couple of shots of Jager between squeezing off rounds of live ammo with (or maybe at after one too many) your fellow enthusiasts. I'm pretty sure the Second Amendment protects our right to shoot drunk. Probably that commie fascist Obama would be against it, though. In fact, I heard he's secretly FOR Prohibition because he's a Muslim. Hey! Now he's trying to take away our guns...and our booze!

If I can't take my gun with me when I get drunk, the terrorists have already won.

If you learn anything from watching old Westerns, it's that guns are NECESSARY in bars... it keeps the poker players honest.

Nice..mixing alcohol and firearms, such a great idea; no doubt what the dopes in the GOP think is good policy for their party!

I've seen enough bar fights to know how stupid this idea is. But I'm also for population reduction (especially dumb, gun-toting, alcoholic rednecks). I'm torn on this one. All I can recommend is for intelligent people to stay away from bars in Tennessee. Maybe with this law we can clean up the gene pool a little bit. I forsee another round of Darwin awards.

Check it out -

MOST states will NOT allow guns (with or without a CCW permit) in any establishments that SELL AND CONSUME LIQUOR.

Just what TN needs - a bunch of rednecks carrying deadly weapons drinking alcohol and arguing about a pool game while smoking a cigarette. Paints a sick picture in your mind, doesn't it ?

So IF this were happening in NYC , people would be safer, because the Northern people are so much more sophisticated and genteel ?

I am trying to imagine what a Police Officer will be thinking every time he goes to a bar fight, Knowing that half of the people in the bar may be LEGALY armed, Unless while sitting with their friends they decided " what the heck, one drink won't hurt anything , aw just one more " .
So now when the culprits are arrested, and you hear the usual mutterings mouthings from the crowd about how innocent their friend is , You know he may have a gun in his pocket. What a nightmare.

The only thing saving thing that I see is the Business can prohibit any customer from being armed.
Most of the Malls and a lot of businesses in Fla. simply put "NO FIREARMS" signs. Which means if you are not a cop, Do not bring in a gun.

I once told the story of a Police Chief in a Cafe being robbed , NOT starting a gunfight in a crowded room. Happy Ending.
Now imagine what happens when half the patrons are armed,, and possibly intoxicated.

Reminds me of that Family Guy episode where Brian got a free pistol for buying a bottle of liquor, as mandated by "Texas State Law".
Still, If i understand this law correctly, I believe you can either have the handgun in a bar or drink in the bar, not both. I'd prefer the drink myself; what kind of an empty person goes around flashing their glock around the bar just because it's legal?

I'm not up to date on Texas law. But in the past Texas had some of the most restrictive laws on whiskey by the drink ( no whisky over the bar ) and carrying of firearms. It was like when they were cleaning up the Wild West they Really cleaned Up.

As you say they in Tn. can legaly carry a gun, if they don't drink. But there is GOING to be trouble at a bar.
Now you have armed citizens, even if still sober, having to decide IF/when to get involved in a bar fight. What if you arearmed but not drinkin , but you see someone else pull out a gun and look toward your friend. As you move to protect him, you see someone else pulling out a gun.
To me it is like allowing matches and lighters in the Blasting Powder room.
