NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Handguns will soon be allowed in bars and restaurants in Tennessee under a new law passed by state legislators who voted to override the governor's veto.

The legislation that takes effect July 14 retains an existing ban on consuming alcohol while carrying a handgun, and restaurant owners can still opt to ban weapons from their establishments.

Thirty-seven other states have similar laws.

The state Senate voted 21-9 on Thursday against Democratic Gov. Phil Bredesen's veto, a day after the House also voted 69-27 to override.

They overrode critics, including Bredesen, who said it's a bad idea to have guns and alcohol in close proximity.

Democratic Sen. Doug Jackson, the main sponsor of the bill, said state Safety Department records show handgun permit holders in Tennessee are responsible.

Of the roughly 218,000 handgun permit holders in Tennessee, 278 had their permits revoked last year, records show. Since 2005, state records shows nearly 1,200 people have lost their permits.

Revocations are issued for felony convictions, while permits can be suspended for pending criminal charges or for court orders of protection.

Sen. Andy Berke, D-Chattanooga, was the only senator to speak against overriding the veto Thursday.

"I believe that we should follow the governor and rethink what we have done," he said.

The law, which was supported by the National Rifle Association, has been successful in other states, its chief lobbyist said.

"Of those 37 states, not one state has attempted to repeal or amend those statutes because they've been successful," Chris Cox said.

Bredesen spokeswoman Lydia Lenker said after Wednesday's House vote that the Democratic governor expected an override when he vetoed the legislation last week.

Following Thursday's Senate vote, Bredesen, who is a gun owner and hunter, reiterated his stance to reporters.

"I still think I'm right," he said. "I still think that guns in bars is a very bad idea. It's an invitation to a disaster."

Yeah, this is going to end well...booze and guns because fights never break out in bars and people are always very reasonable in these establishments...GREAT idea... Kind of ironic that the state where to Scopes trial took place is providing proof of Darwin's theories.

"Tennesseans have figured out a way to do away with bar room brawls."

Yes, and turn them into barroom slaughters instead....

Can't wait for the public service ads: "Sure you've picked your designated driver, but have you picked the designated shooter?"

Sounds like another brilliant Rushpublicant idea.

Provide people with the means to immediately and violently resolve issues (gun in pocket).
Place these people in an environment in which the impediments to using such deadly force is chemically removed.

Does the law state that shooting gays, negroes and atheists is OK?

Because there's no better combination than deadly force and drunks.

Not that I agree with this... but this is for restaurants, not just bars. Reading is fundamental.

BTW... you would be surprised of how many little old ladies are packing heat in their purse... in NY!

It still doesn't make it right.
Last thing I would want is someone packing heat at a local TGIF that my family goes to. A b a d situation.

Little old ladies packing heat? Sounds like fear has quite a strong hold on little white haired old ladies. WHITE being the operative word. Just sayin.

Yes, we can safely predict an increase in foot, leg and groin shootings in Tennessee.

I like this idea and I think we should encourage Kansas, Alaska, the Carolinas and several other states to adopt this law.

In just a few years all these states will turn solidly Democratic due to the accelerated attrition rate among drunken, red-neck, gun-toting, fearful Rushpublicants.

Bama boy here...I couldn't agree with you more. There are many good people here but we are constantly being out voiced by the loud mouth republican/southern baptists. Believe me. I love the idea!

I can relate--I lived in that state most of my life. My sister & her husband, who live in down south in Washington county, elected to attend a different church after letting it be known that they voted for Obama. They'd been attending that southern baptist church for two decades, yet they still got so much grief from their fellow southern baptists that they felt it wasn't worthwhile to continue there.

I don't know if you're familiar with that part of the state, but Washington county as a whole is considered by most as a pretty wild, backwoods area, so I can just imagine that most of the people I know there would fully support any legislation that extends gun rights [although they are so removed from any significant metropolis that they carry guns anywhere they want anyway].

Yeah, am I reading this right? Guns are allowed in bars, but you can't consume alcohol while carrying a firearm. I have this feeling of vertigo.

Wow! Mix a depressant like alcohol, country music (enough to drive anyone to mayhem), FIX news on the box, unemployment, and guns. What a brilliant concept. And it's working in other states? What do they mean by working? Good way to support Darwin's theory of evolution through natural selection, though. Little did these bible-thumping NRA zombies realize that they'd be supporting godless secular science.
And here's another thought - when those drunk, gun-toting patrons get pulled over for DUI, who's going to protect the law officer from an armed and drunk belligerent?

Good Point. I bet if you went and asked the law inforcement officers what they thought about this, the Governor would have pie on his face.

But I agree with the Darwinism point, we certainly need to cull the heard of ingorance in Tennessee.

Maybe this is another way they hope to increase the prison population. It makes me wonder how much the NRA supporters have invested in Prison Services.
