WICHITA, Kan. — Hundreds of people gathered Saturday to honor slain abortion provider Dr. George Tiller, eulogized by a longtime friend as a passionate and generous man who repeatedly overcame difficult challenges.

Tiller's funeral at College Hill United Methodist Church also drew small groups of protesters. Police and federal marshals provided heavy security.

Tiller, one of the nation's few providers of late-term abortions, was killed by a gunshot last Sunday in the foyer of his own church, Reformation Lutheran, while he was serving as an usher and his wife was singing in the choir. His family had the funeral at the Methodist church to accommodate the large number of mourners.

His son, Maury, said the manner of his father's death resulted in an unimaginable outpouring of love and support for the family.

But he added: "I struggle with the manner he was welcomed into heaven."

Others recalled personal quirks that made him human.

Tiller's daughter, Rebecca, recalled how her father loved "Star Trek," and gave her a framed poster of Trekkie sayings for her apartment, which he promised her would bring her success if she read them each day before going out. Among his favorites were: "Live long and prosper," and, "When you go out to the universe remember, boldly go where no man has gone before."

He also was remembered for his generosity and sense of humor.

"Dear God, get heaven ready, because Mr. Enthusiasm is coming," said Larry Borcherding, of Overland Park, who first met Tiller a half-century ago when both were students at the University of Kansas. "Heaven will never be the same. It will be a better, better place with George in it."

About 700 people filled the church sanctuary and some 200 others watched a closed-circuit television broadcast in another room.

A large portrait of Tiller hung at the front of the sanctuary, and nearby was a wreath of flowers with the words "TRUST WOMEN." Some mourners wore buttons that said "Attitude is Everything."

Tiller's clinic in Wichita was among a few in the U.S. performing third-trimester abortions, and that made it a target of regular protests. Most were peaceful, but his clinic was bombed in 1986, and he was shot in both arms in 1993.

Borcherding recalled that immediately after that 1993 shooting, Tiller kept in close contact with him because Borcherding had lost his job.

"Who had a more boisterous, heartfelt laugh than George Tiller?" Borcherding said. "There are so many stories. I have many, many, many. Let's be sure to share them later."

Scott Roeder, a 51-year-old abortion opponent, was arrested a few hours after the shooting just outside Kansas City. He was charged two days later with the attack at the church, where he had occasionally attended services two months earlier.

About 30 abortion rights supporters lined a sidewalk outside the church Saturday, each holding a white carnation and one with a sign declaring Tiller, his family and his staff as "civil rights heroes." Many wore green or blue T-shirts commemorating Tiller's life, with the National Organization for Women's logo.

Most anti-abortion groups avoided the funeral, having denounced Tiller's shooting. But 17 demonstrators showed up from Westboro Baptist Church, known for picketing soldiers' funerals to present its message that their deaths are God's punishment for Americans' tolerance of homosexuality.

They held signs such as "God sent the shooter" and "Abortion is bloody murder."

Police kept them about 500 feet away from the church, mostly out of sight of people arriving for the funeral, although their shouts and singing could be heard from blocks away.

The Westboro Baptist demonstration drew about a dozen counter-demonstrators, and the two groups shouted insults at each other before the service and tried to drown each other out with singing.

"This has nothing to do with abortion," said Mark Voyles, an Army veteran from Derby who said he was upset about Westboro Baptist's attacks on soldiers.

The service also drew 50 motorcyclists from the American Legion Riders, who honored Tiller's service in the Navy. Their leader, Cregg Hansen, also from Derby, said Tiller's family asked them to be there.

"We don't get involved in politics," Hansen said. "We're here 120 percent for the veterans."

Atheist and mass media aren't destroying religion, it's destroying itself. How effective is a message of love and kindness when those speaking the message are advocating war and violence in it's name. This goes for almost all religions. Is it too much to ask that we all be allowed to live life the way we want as long as it doesn't interfere with rights of another individual? Were we not given the freedom to choose our own path in life. Is there already not a place for those that don't follow God?

God even addresses that act of judging another person in the Bible. Clear as day, not much need for interpretation. Here it is:

Matthew 7

1Do not judge others, then you will not be judged.

2The way you judge others, that is the way you will be judged. How much you give to others is how much will be given to you.

3`Why do you look at the spot of dust in your brother's eye? But you do not see a big stick in your own eye!

No mortal on earth is perfect. So instead of wasting your time judging the faults of others, you should instead work on your own faults

God loves everyone? How do you know? Did you ask him in person? Do you go on AOL and sent him an IM to which he responded? Or are you pulling all that out of your rear?

The fanatical ideology of the anti-abortionists is the same as Taliban and Al-Qaeida members who blow up themselves so they will gain virgins in paradise. The anti-abortionists say they are pro-life, but will gladly take a life if they deem it somehow not worthy of their confirmation. The United States MUST do something about domestic terrorist networks, such as Operation Rescue. They have proven to be a threat to the freedoms of women and their doctors. Therefore, they are a threat to the freedom of all our citizens.

Meanwhile, most of us so-called "anti-abortionists" are against taking of human life, PERIOD. We work quietly helping women who are in crisis pregnancies and can be seen in groups protesting unjust wars (or supporting groups that do so) and are against the death penalty.

The Constitution is a wonderful and marvelous document but if christians were to run it ..it would be worthless. Religion has caused more wars and killings than anything else on earth. Jesus never said or taught you had to be a christian. These nuts believe they are in the army of GOD. If THE CREATOR created the world and everything there in....why does HE need a bunch of nuts and fools to help? I have never seen in the Bible where Jesus begged the people for money. I have never seen where HE said to go out and kill people that disagreed with his teachings. HE taught... Love ye one another as the FATHER in HEAVEN love you. There are enough MINISTERS in the UNITED STATES along to save the world over a trillion times. But all they talk about and want is money. They care less a GOD. To back a person to go out and kill another is not of GOD. But SATAN can be your GOD if you worship him. GOD is in the heart of man not in a gun. May Dr. Tiller rest in PEACE.

I don't want to get into the feelings I get when I think about these church members protesting funerals so I'll leave it to their own God to denounce their behavior.

Matthew 7

1Do not judge others, then you will not be judged.

2The way you judge others, that is the way you will be judged. How much you give to others is how much will be given to you.
.

5You are not true to yourselves! First take the stick out of your own eye. Then you will be able to see to take the dust out of your brother's eye.
.

15`Take care. There are prophets who are not true. They come to you dressed like sheep, but inside they are like wolves, bad animals that kill sheep.

16You will know them by the things they do. People do not pick fruit like grapes from thistles. They do not pick fruit like figs from thorn trees.
.

21`Some people say to me, "Lord, Lord". But not all who say that will go into the kingdom of heaven. Only those who do what my Father in heaven wants, will go in.

22Many people will say to me on that day, "Lord, Lord, did we not speak in your name? Did we not drive bad spirits out of people in your name? Did we not do big works in your name?"

23Then I will say to them, "I never knew you. Go away from me! What you do is very

The pro-lifers always seem to think that those who are pro-choice are trying to persuade every woman who gets pregnant to terminate her pregnancy. It's pro-choice, not pro-abortion. It's about an individual's right to make a choice based on there individual circumstance.

Right wing extremists and fundamentalists are of the same mentality as Taliban extremists. I firmly believe that people like this are a greater threat to America than any Islamic terrorist sect. These people are going to become increasingly violent as it becomes clear to them that the majority of Americans reject their views, meaning they have no hope of enforcing their views via democratic elections. The extremists will resort to violence, as they have done throughout history and as they have started to do in America already. This country is not immune to this type of sedition, look at the Civil War. I don't think anything of that magnitude is on the horizon because they don't have the numbers, but I wouldn't be shocked if we see groups like this committing widespread violence within a few years. We need to be alert against this dangerous threat to innocent lives.

There are large groups of the American Taliban in the Army and the Air Force, and at both academies!

With leaders like Randal Terry that want to violently set a Theocracy in place!

Then he has stated, Pro-choicers, gays, and liberals will be hunted down, tried and executed.

That leaves little to the imagination eh? Quite the man of God.......

That's absolutely accurate. And clear evidence in Wichita 2001 showed that there are no separations between the avowed killers of doctors and the self-styled "peaceful" protesters since they were all hugging and high-fiving one another during that hot July week. They are tied up with all the other extremists who hate America. Tim McVeigh and his crowd are also this crowd. They are a continuum, not a separate set of groups. They have convinced themselves that the government and therefore other people like themselves, are 'stealing their freedom' - when that means they have to have auto licenses and act like the rest of us. Well, American Taliban - take your rage elsewhere. We've had ENOUGH. You are the dregs of the earth, the losers of all time through your own doing, and you have killed enough people. Go away if you don't like America because the rest of us have work to do to reclaim it from your Good Buddy, George W. Who'd screw you over in a heartbeat, but you're too stupid to know it. Bah!

Except that the people who wrote the Constitution were deists and have, in many of their writings, emphasize the importance of keeping your God out of our government. Quite ironically, just as they were the forefathers of our country, they are also the forefathers of current day atheists.

I am struggling with one specific aspect of abortion (I am Pro-choice) intellectually for the longest time. My curiosity is academic and not ideological. Assume one knows that the baby will be born genetically defective, and will not be able to sustain itself upon birth (special needs children and such). If one does not intervene by modern medical technology, that baby would expire in due course as per natural selection (call it God's will if you're religious). But upon such intervention, one can prolong such a defective babies life which then must be considered in a sense against the Almighty's plan for that newborn. Medical intervention to prolong a defective baby's life is a man made invention, so is abortion. Then my question is this: What is the point in bringing a defective baby to this world? Luckily, a couple has many years to make new attempts to produce an offspring which is healthy. If not, they can adopt. I know this is a very politically incorrect subject to discuss but I think it should be dealt with.

Your argument is logical, esp. if you are an "elder" (any woman 35 or older) who has only a couple shots at a healthy child. I wish more people understood that an estimated (by scientists and Docs, not the religious right) 2/3 of fertilized eggs abort themselves, sometimes a woman can tell and most of the time she can't. Sometimes they implant and survive a few days/weeks. These were defective in some way, or were rejected by the woman's body. I hardly think even the biggest nut can come up with an excuse for these "self-abortions". Are they suicides? Thats ridiculous as they are tiny balls of cells with no consciousness. Sometimes they are healthy enough to keep the woman's body from rejecting them, as in spina bifita. People do need to trust women on these issues. We evolved to do this, after all.

Village Voice: Not only did the pro-life Joe Scarborough launch his political career by defeating a pro-choice Republican to win a Florida congressional seat in 1994, the then 29-year-old insurance attorney debuted in local newspapers in 1993 as the pro bono attorney for the Pensacola man convicted of the first murder of an abortion doctor killer, Michael Griffin.

I wonder if anyone on this site has watched a woman die in childbirth, I have. As a surgical RN I witnessed a horrible death of a mother of two toddlers , because she and her husband chose not to have a third trimester abortion, her choice. She convulsed and had servere seizures and stroked out before the c-csection could be performed and died shortly after. The bouncing baby, that was a (in laymans terms) a brain-stem baby with the abilities to eat and s@@t was delivered. This baby was deformed and the family(husband) refused to look or try and touch him, the touch would not have done much good since his nerve endings were exposed and each touch caused an outcry(scream) of pain stimulus. He lived in a nursing home for 3 yrs, each diaper change, each feeding session, causing pain and torture, The family never visiting once. Was it worth the mothers live? Was it worth the loss of a mother for the other children??? In my mind no.

"God sent the shooter" and "Abortion is bloody murder." makes sense only to those that need desparately to see a head doctor. Troubling that they see zero wrong with the person responsible for the fu.ne.ral today.

I can understand the sentiment "Abortion is bloody murder" even if I don't agree with it. But "God sent the shooter" just exemplifies a religious group which fundementally misunderstands the book they supposedly lives their lives by. Well, misunderstands may be too generous because we all know that most religious people have not read the 'good book' from front to back. It is just too long and too dry for many people to bother investing the time. Bad but smart religious leaders know this so they scew their vision of the bible any which way they like knowing that they are opreaching to a bunch of sheep whom are highly unlikely to debate what they hear for lack of havign the proper information. They are willfully ignorant and love it.
