WICHITA, Kan. — Hundreds of people gathered Saturday to honor slain abortion provider Dr. George Tiller, eulogized by a longtime friend as a passionate and generous man who repeatedly overcame difficult challenges.

Tiller's funeral at College Hill United Methodist Church also drew small groups of protesters. Police and federal marshals provided heavy security.

Tiller, one of the nation's few providers of late-term abortions, was killed by a gunshot last Sunday in the foyer of his own church, Reformation Lutheran, while he was serving as an usher and his wife was singing in the choir. His family had the funeral at the Methodist church to accommodate the large number of mourners.

His son, Maury, said the manner of his father's death resulted in an unimaginable outpouring of love and support for the family.

But he added: "I struggle with the manner he was welcomed into heaven."

Others recalled personal quirks that made him human.

Tiller's daughter, Rebecca, recalled how her father loved "Star Trek," and gave her a framed poster of Trekkie sayings for her apartment, which he promised her would bring her success if she read them each day before going out. Among his favorites were: "Live long and prosper," and, "When you go out to the universe remember, boldly go where no man has gone before."

He also was remembered for his generosity and sense of humor.

"Dear God, get heaven ready, because Mr. Enthusiasm is coming," said Larry Borcherding, of Overland Park, who first met Tiller a half-century ago when both were students at the University of Kansas. "Heaven will never be the same. It will be a better, better place with George in it."

About 700 people filled the church sanctuary and some 200 others watched a closed-circuit television broadcast in another room.

A large portrait of Tiller hung at the front of the sanctuary, and nearby was a wreath of flowers with the words "TRUST WOMEN." Some mourners wore buttons that said "Attitude is Everything."

Tiller's clinic in Wichita was among a few in the U.S. performing third-trimester abortions, and that made it a target of regular protests. Most were peaceful, but his clinic was bombed in 1986, and he was shot in both arms in 1993.

Borcherding recalled that immediately after that 1993 shooting, Tiller kept in close contact with him because Borcherding had lost his job.

"Who had a more boisterous, heartfelt laugh than George Tiller?" Borcherding said. "There are so many stories. I have many, many, many. Let's be sure to share them later."

Scott Roeder, a 51-year-old abortion opponent, was arrested a few hours after the shooting just outside Kansas City. He was charged two days later with the attack at the church, where he had occasionally attended services two months earlier.

About 30 abortion rights supporters lined a sidewalk outside the church Saturday, each holding a white carnation and one with a sign declaring Tiller, his family and his staff as "civil rights heroes." Many wore green or blue T-shirts commemorating Tiller's life, with the National Organization for Women's logo.

Most anti-abortion groups avoided the funeral, having denounced Tiller's shooting. But 17 demonstrators showed up from Westboro Baptist Church, known for picketing soldiers' funerals to present its message that their deaths are God's punishment for Americans' tolerance of homosexuality.

They held signs such as "God sent the shooter" and "Abortion is bloody murder."

Police kept them about 500 feet away from the church, mostly out of sight of people arriving for the funeral, although their shouts and singing could be heard from blocks away.

The Westboro Baptist demonstration drew about a dozen counter-demonstrators, and the two groups shouted insults at each other before the service and tried to drown each other out with singing.

"This has nothing to do with abortion," said Mark Voyles, an Army veteran from Derby who said he was upset about Westboro Baptist's attacks on soldiers.

The service also drew 50 motorcyclists from the American Legion Riders, who honored Tiller's service in the Navy. Their leader, Cregg Hansen, also from Derby, said Tiller's family asked them to be there.

"We don't get involved in politics," Hansen said. "We're here 120 percent for the veterans."

How can the likes of Savage, Hannity, Beck and (especially) RUSHBO not be held accountable in crimes going on like these? The government should hold them ALL responsible for adding FUEL to the fire that exists in America today.

Agreed. These characters scrape the bottom for the worst of human emotions, all to enrich themselves. Division, hatred, bloodshed and mayhem are their stock in trade. The first amendment only goes so far. These charlatans are deliberately formenting an atmosphere that could lead to untold bloodshed and unspeakable tragedy in America. They need to be stopped before events spin out of control.

Oddly, Hypocrisy Rooted in High Morals

"Morally upstanding people are the do-gooders of society, right? Actually, a new study finds that a sense of moral superiority can lead to unethical acts, such as c.heating. In fact, some of the best do-gooders can become the worst c.heats."

Dearie me...

As there are many FΟX defenders, and that this was specifically requested again:

I saw a FΟX viewer
As he came up from the sεwer
I asked, "what are you doing down there?"
With some hesitation
He said of his nation
"It's where cοnservatίve holdouts have their lair."

"You must be famὶshed, I will take you in."
Nervοusly he backed away with brοwn tοothed grin.
"You have nothing to fear but fear itself"
Words which twitched his ears like those of an elf

So I thought I'd quote a Bίble verse
Which clearly made matters worse
But he lacked convictiοn to do himself hαrm
For I could see feαr in his eyes should he have bought the farm

How does one reach a viewer of FΟX?
Such an infectiοus disease as bad as The Pοx
Before I could give it any more thought
I saw any efforts were all for naυght

For fearing humanity not thinking he'd sυrvive
Back into the sεwer did that strange creature dive
So back to my home as I walked thαt last block
All the time prαying, "let there be Ηell for Rυpert Mυrdoch."

1. Westboro Baptist Church is not a real church. It is a cult run by Fred Phelps for the express purpose of making a name for Fred Phelps. A former member of the "church" has said Phelps is addicted to anger and acting in a provocative manner.

2. Westboro Baptist Church is so extreme, it has been denounced by mainstream Baptists, fined by local governments, sued, and banned outright in the UK.

3. The membership of the "church" consists almost entirely of Phelps' extended family. His family consists almost entirely of crooked lawyers.

4. Phelps was once a civil rights lawyer. It is theorized that he is a provocateur and that his antics were actually designed to discredit the far right. I don't know if this is true, but I like to think so.

From Wiki

(Westboro Baptist Church) also picketed revivals sponsored by evangelist Billy Graham, with the claim that he would burn in H*ll for failing to propagate the "God Hates F*gs" doctrine. In October 2004 the group protested Graham's mass meetings, calling the 85-year-old preacher a "H*ll-bound false prophet".

1. Westboro is every bit as much a real church as the church of Scientology, which the USA seems to think is legit. Their legal acumen and the church facade are 2 things they have in common.

2. Don't forget the Phelps's were turned away at the Canadian border when they went to spread their message after some guy decapitated a fellow bus rider on a trans-continental trip. And, they have the distinction of being the only right wingers (as far as I know) who were too wacky for Faux News, who turned Fred's mike off.

3. One or two of Fred's kids escaped the cult. Their lawyerly ways are their strength. Fred has been disbarred, but the clan learned from that. They know exactly how far to go in their free-speech tirades, and if you dare assault them, you'll be contributing heavily to their funds.

4. If Phelps is a provocateur, then he is a most cruel one. They trot their hate-monger-in-training kids out to their "performances." They insist their kids not take part in any profane activities in school (Halloween parties, etc.), so they sit out in the hallways by themselves.

It wasn't a witch hunt the guy was performing 9th month abortions, and for the clueless he was never acquitted of performing late term abortions. He was acquitted of having an improper financial arrangement.

From france4.com:

"He was acquitted in March on charges that he performed 19 illegal abortions in 2003 in a case which his lawyer described as a witch hunt."

Had these not been late-term abortions, he would not have even been charged!

The protests are des.pica.ble. But did this doctor show compassion for those children that were viable and a.borted? I am not agreeing with the e.xtre.mists who think he got what he deserved. Ki-lling is wrong unless it's self defense. But I do think this should be an opportunity to have an honest discussion about "late term" ab-ortions. There is a reason why this Dr was one of only three in this country willing to perform it. Let's put that in perspective, over 99% of doctors that perform abo.rtion.s believe that what this doctor was doing was wrong (or im.mo.ral).

We are not talking about children in the Middle East, I indeed have compassion for them and I never stated what my religion is. You sound like you dislike Christians, that's your prerogative but I didn't refer to religion. You don't have to be religious to have a sense of right and wrong. The extremists are clearly wrong, the procedure of late term abrtns except in rare cases seems immoral to me and I am actually 100% in support of abortion rights.

If late term abortion is so acceptable why aren't other doctors rushing out to perform it? Clearly there is a lot of money in it?

Again, I'm not an apologist for these ex.tre.mists, his mu.rd.er was wrong and so are the protests. The procedure is co.ntroversial and I think there are a lot of people who otherwise support a.bo.rtion that have an issue with it.

We need to have an honest discussion about late term abortions. It will not come from the protesters with their obscene signs and faux-blood stained dolls.
You have no evidence that the late term abortions performed by Dr. Tiller were of viable fetuses. Nor do you have reason to criticize his compassion for the parents who chose to end a pregnancy that carried to term would have produced a malformed infant unable to develop into a sensate being. You have no evidence of how many parents or women who came to him and were counseled to carry the fetus to term.
You have no valid source for your statement that over 99% of doctors that perform abbortions believe that what this doctor was doing was wrong or immoral.

It has been WIDELY reported that this Dr is onbe of only three doctors in the country willing to perform this procedure. Otherwise you make very valid points concerning a variety of possibly legitimate situations that might call for this procedure. I'm not one of these hard liners that knows all of the answers on this. I know enough that I have concerns about this procedure and not ab ortion in general.

Please read the stories of women and families who had to go to Dr. Tiller,

http://parenting.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/06/04/patients-remember-dr-tiller/

These were not decisions made because, "I just don't feel like being pregnant anymore", these were heart breaking decisions that I pray that no one else in the world has to make. You're right Dr. Tiller was only three in the county willing to perform this procedure, not only is this a difficult procedure but based on the reactions of a lot of unhinged people, any person willing to perform this procedue is now risking their lives.
