WICHITA, Kan. — Hundreds of people gathered Saturday to honor slain abortion provider Dr. George Tiller, eulogized by a longtime friend as a passionate and generous man who repeatedly overcame difficult challenges.

Tiller's funeral at College Hill United Methodist Church also drew small groups of protesters. Police and federal marshals provided heavy security.

Tiller, one of the nation's few providers of late-term abortions, was killed by a gunshot last Sunday in the foyer of his own church, Reformation Lutheran, while he was serving as an usher and his wife was singing in the choir. His family had the funeral at the Methodist church to accommodate the large number of mourners.

His son, Maury, said the manner of his father's death resulted in an unimaginable outpouring of love and support for the family.

But he added: "I struggle with the manner he was welcomed into heaven."

Others recalled personal quirks that made him human.

Tiller's daughter, Rebecca, recalled how her father loved "Star Trek," and gave her a framed poster of Trekkie sayings for her apartment, which he promised her would bring her success if she read them each day before going out. Among his favorites were: "Live long and prosper," and, "When you go out to the universe remember, boldly go where no man has gone before."

He also was remembered for his generosity and sense of humor.

"Dear God, get heaven ready, because Mr. Enthusiasm is coming," said Larry Borcherding, of Overland Park, who first met Tiller a half-century ago when both were students at the University of Kansas. "Heaven will never be the same. It will be a better, better place with George in it."

About 700 people filled the church sanctuary and some 200 others watched a closed-circuit television broadcast in another room.

A large portrait of Tiller hung at the front of the sanctuary, and nearby was a wreath of flowers with the words "TRUST WOMEN." Some mourners wore buttons that said "Attitude is Everything."

Tiller's clinic in Wichita was among a few in the U.S. performing third-trimester abortions, and that made it a target of regular protests. Most were peaceful, but his clinic was bombed in 1986, and he was shot in both arms in 1993.

Borcherding recalled that immediately after that 1993 shooting, Tiller kept in close contact with him because Borcherding had lost his job.

"Who had a more boisterous, heartfelt laugh than George Tiller?" Borcherding said. "There are so many stories. I have many, many, many. Let's be sure to share them later."

Scott Roeder, a 51-year-old abortion opponent, was arrested a few hours after the shooting just outside Kansas City. He was charged two days later with the attack at the church, where he had occasionally attended services two months earlier.

About 30 abortion rights supporters lined a sidewalk outside the church Saturday, each holding a white carnation and one with a sign declaring Tiller, his family and his staff as "civil rights heroes." Many wore green or blue T-shirts commemorating Tiller's life, with the National Organization for Women's logo.

Most anti-abortion groups avoided the funeral, having denounced Tiller's shooting. But 17 demonstrators showed up from Westboro Baptist Church, known for picketing soldiers' funerals to present its message that their deaths are God's punishment for Americans' tolerance of homosexuality.

They held signs such as "God sent the shooter" and "Abortion is bloody murder."

Police kept them about 500 feet away from the church, mostly out of sight of people arriving for the funeral, although their shouts and singing could be heard from blocks away.

The Westboro Baptist demonstration drew about a dozen counter-demonstrators, and the two groups shouted insults at each other before the service and tried to drown each other out with singing.

"This has nothing to do with abortion," said Mark Voyles, an Army veteran from Derby who said he was upset about Westboro Baptist's attacks on soldiers.

The service also drew 50 motorcyclists from the American Legion Riders, who honored Tiller's service in the Navy. Their leader, Cregg Hansen, also from Derby, said Tiller's family asked them to be there.

"We don't get involved in politics," Hansen said. "We're here 120 percent for the veterans."

Alright I'm out, got a party to attend, but before I go a reminder to America.

If you are a conservative that doesn't like the rule of law, please feel free to move to Afghanistan or Somalia. They are almost completely devoid of any discernable legal system.

On the other hand here in America we have laws written and approved of, by a set of duly elected representatives. Breaking those laws or attempting to subvert their implementation through violence is t.e.r.r.o.r.ism. Though if white christofascists are doing it we call you pro-life for some strange reason.

Stop breaking the law and leave people who are following it alone!

Then according to your strange definition-all of those black and latino gangs in the inner city would be domestic terrorists too. Why can Dr Tillers killer not be just a plain killer?

The BBC (I believe--the reporter was British) aired a documentary about the Phelps' clan a while back. It is basically a self-contained family unit that has really become a stain in our state. Thankfully some laws have been passed, and an organization of motorcycle riders has been magnificent in keeping them from disrupting services like Dr. Tiller's and those of fall.en soldiers. Just a na.sty bunch. We had the "pleasure" of them paying us a visit a few years ago to protest an editorial in our daily paper about ol' Fred--the old man stayed home. The worst part about these people is, that like the kay-kay-kay, they indoctrinate the very young to continue their lagacy of ha.te.

As awful as late term abortions are, would allowing the mother to die be a better choice?

Babies die in the wo.mb and ki// the mother if not removed. How is it immoral to save her life?

False choice here or straw man argument. If mother is at risk, she is taken to the hospital and the situation is treated. I think you are being melodramatic to serve your point of view. Get the facts please.

Abortion has been around since ancient times. If it's such an evil thing why is there no real statement in the bible that says "abortion is wrong" anywhere? You'd think that if god wrote the bible and abortion is the world's biggest sin that god would see to it to have someone write down a statement that states in no uncertain terms that god hates abortions and that the choice to have one should never be an option.

I realize the verse that god claims to have known us when we were in the womb is often referenced, but that's doesn't address abortion at all. If god doesn't want them god would have had someone write down pointblank that abortion is wrong. So where is this passage? Also, one could look at that verse and see it's related to the idea of god having even the hairs on our head numbered, or put another way: these two verses are trying to say "I'm god and I'm all powerful and all knowing and know everything about you." This would make much more sense since that idea is conveyed more often than not in the bible.

So the question remains and I would like an answer. If abortion has been around since the days of the bible, and the bible is the word of god, and god hates abortion, then why is there no direct statement in the bible designed to tell humanity that abortion is wrong?

Where's the evidence to back up that statement?

Some actual facts (source: www.france24.com)

1. Late-term abortions are legal in Kansas if two independent physicians agree that the mother could suffer irreparable harm by giving birth.

2. He [Dr Tiller} was acquitted in March on charges that he performed 19 illegal abortions in 2003 in a case which his lawyer described as a witch hunt.

3. Tiller was acquitted of having an illegal financial relationship with the doctor who provided the second opinion.

People who murder, advocate murder, encourage murder and/or rationalize murder in the name of God are neither God-like or Christ-like. Instead they are cowards who hide behind religious beliefs they talk about but do not practice and they are guilty of taking their God's name in vain.

The murderer of Dr. Tiller and the killer's twisted fans worship no God that I can recognize:

"A religion true to its nature must also be concerned about man's social conditions. Religion deals with both earth and heaven, both time and eternity. Religion operates not only on the vertical plane but also on the horizontal.

It seeks not only to integrate men with God but to integrate men with men and each man with himself. This means, at bottom, that the Christian gospel is a two-way road. On the one hand, it seeks to change souls of men and thereby unite them with God; on the other hand, it seeks to change the environmental conditions of men so that the soul will have a chance after it is changed.

Any religion that professes to be concerned with the souls of men and is not concerned with the slums that damn them, the economic conditions that strangle them, and the social conditions that cripple them is a dry-as-dust religion. Such a religion is the kind the Marxists like to see - an opiate of the people."

- Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Christian is as Christian does, and these 21st century pharisees need to remember the admonitions from Jesus Himself about *hypocrisy.*

God pity them all, for theirs are willfully lost souls...

Meaning of terrorisum is to strike terror in those who do not beleive the way that you want them to. It is to strike terror in the hearts of people that think differantly than you. It is to strike terror in the hearts of people who dare to live their lives a way that you do not think is right. It is to stop those from doing things that you do not approve of or believe in.

Alquida could take lessons from these so clled right to life. They are TERRORIST no question about it.

What choice means is for a WOMAN to have control of her own body and not the goverment period. This doctor offered hope to women who had none he offered life to women who were at the point of death. What this terrorist did was to murder a father, husband and friend.

This may come off as preachy but I think we are starting to use the name "christian" in a slanderous way.
I am a progressive liberal activist catholic. I approach my religious beliefs like the majority of thinking individuals. When we talk about the Taliban as being Muslims we make sure to state that they are fanatical extremists, because lumping all Muslims together would be well ignorant. The most vocal parts of religious groups tend to be the most insane, they believe in forcing their beliefs on others.
There are many things in the Catholic teachings I find utterly ridiculous and I don't even think twice about incorporating them into my life, but I was raised a Catholic by very liberal parents who probably are at Church right now. My father worked as an attorney for 40 years taking on Big Corporations defending the working class against oppressive regimes of greed. My mother is a 3rd grade school teacher. I am a campaign/community organizer, working for groups such as ACLU, SAVE THE CHILDREN, ENVIRONMENT AMERICA ect...
During the last presidential election I ran a campaign office in N. Carolina for Moveon.org , four other directors in this state were also Catholics. My point being that I almost feal now that I should hide the fact that part of who I am is a Catholic or that I should apologies for this fact. When in fact the "christians" (extremist) have hijacked a whole monotheistic system for political gains

I wish more professed Christians would take an active role in dissuading those who give that faith a bad reputation, but as someone born and raised in a deeply Christian environment, I give myself a certain license to criticize the religion as a whole. Even though I'm no longer Christian in the formal sense, I still speak from inside that cultural sphere, not as someone condemning another culture from outside.

No i agree with you. I find a child like peacefulness in the stories (mythology) of my upbringing. I'm a fourth generation Notre Dame alum (extremely right wing teachings,
but I was fortunate enough to have an ability to spot hypocrisy from an early age. I grew up under the Reagan/Bush times, and my father explained the fundamental difference between the two parties using Robin Hood=Democrats. I believe that we have a moral duty to take care of the most unfortunate of our society, this means to not condemn poverty but to treat it.
I understand that you grew up in a strict Christian enviroment, and I commend you for not throwing the baby out with the bath water.(not a anti-abortion pun, I also have fund raised for Planned Parenthood )

You are not preachy at all and you are absolutely correct. I was accustomed to a very different image of Christianity, growing up. It was the religion of Jesus who cared for the poor and sick, who told his followers to lend the other cheek when slapped on one and who forgave his executioners. But then that image was also outside of the US. Americanized Christianity has a entirely different face.
The Christianity you speak of is the one I am accustomed to and love. I hope and wish more people become Christians like you. :)
