Gordon Brown "Obama Beach" Gaffe: British PM Misspeaks At D-Day Ceremony (VIDEO)

Huffington Post:

Maybe the stress is getting to him. British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, who spent Friday pushing back against calls for his resignation, made a somewhat embarrassing mistake while speaking Saturday during the ceremonies honoring the 65th anniversary of D-Day at Omaha Beach In France.

As Brown spoke somberly about the US and Britain's cooperation during the invasion of Normandy he said, "Next to Obama Beach, we join President Obama in paying particular tribute to the spectacular bravery of American soldiers who gave their lives."

The phonetically similar words nearly tripped up Brown again before he seemed to become aware of his mistake and say the name correctly.

I was looking through CSPAN and I found this..

PENDING -- U.K. Prime Minister Gordon Brown Resigns

This amid the British pound dramatically falling in value as well as a series of ministers stepping down from his government.

Nothing from others news agencies though. Do not know how accurate this is.

Thanks for the link Quincey. Interesting. It looks like one of those situations where the news website publishers pre-emptively write the headline and story, but they don't provide a direct menu or link to that story on their website. however, they mistakenly keep the story in a published state instead of unpublished.

The web crawler/spider/search engine on the website, as well as Google, still index the story/page and make it accessible to the outside world.

A similar thing happened when in 2003 CNN website unwittingly published several pages of obituaries. The pages included tributes to Fidel Castro, Dick Cheney, Nelson Mandela, Bob Hope, Gerald Ford, Pope John Paul II, and Ronald Reagan.

Or maybe the C-SPAN website is like the newspaper in that programme Early Edition. Remember that? The one with the guy who mysteriously receives the Chicago Sun-Times paper the day before it's published.

No big deal. He did correct himself.

To be honest he is under a lot of stress right now. Some of his cabinet members have deserted him, dissed him, and some in his party are challenging his leadership, telling him to leave.

Poor bloke, because he does seem like a decent person.

Such a small slip of the tongue. It was a most excellent speech that the PM gave.

Much ado about nothing.

Too late, a few hours ago I was on another site and the republicans on the site brought up this story and said that Obama made Brown say "Obama beach"
12:16 AM on 06/08/2009
Ha! No surprise! They are so pitiful!

With Gordon Brown's low approval ratings in the UK, the resignations of his cabinet ministers, the losses for his party in the recent UK local elections, the probable losses in the EU elections, and the many calls for him to resign from persons within his own party, he is probably comparing his unpopularity to that of President Obama's huge popularity and wishing he could trade places.

Gordon Brown has "Obama on the Brain" ................. ergo the slip of the tongue between Omaha and Obama

Meh....honest mistake. No big deal.
08:50 PM on 06/06/2009
Too funny! Perhaps, it shows the respect and reverence these other leaders have for this president.
10:22 PM on 06/06/2009
Do you think it's funny to the hundreds of thousands who lost family members on Omaha beach keeping Britain from falling to Hiltler?
