I Like ItI Don’t Like It

AP: WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama pleaded for action on his health care agenda, using his weekly radio and Internet address to focus on his domestic priority even while traveling overseas.

"It's time to deliver," Obama said Saturday.

His remarks were timed to gatherings in living rooms and coffee shops around the country by tens of thousands of people to discuss health care. The weekend events, organized by his campaign, were intended to try to build a groundswell of support for congressional action.

"If we do nothing, everyone's health care will be put in jeopardy," Obama said.

"Fixing what's wrong with our health care system is no longer a luxury we hope to achieve _ it's a necessity we cannot postpone any longer," said the president, who attended D-Day ceremonies in France on Saturday.

The first bill containing language to put in place his health care goals has begun circulating on Capitol Hill. Draft legislation from the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee would require employers to cover their employees or pay a penalty, and would guarantee coverage for all.

That parallels Obama's goals of lowering costs, ensuring choice, and providing coverage to some 50 million uninsured Americans.

Obama articulated those goals again in his radio address and in a videotaped message prepared for supporters at the community meetings.

"Any health care reform must be built around fundamental reforms that lower costs, improve quality and coverage and also protect consumer choice," Obama said in the radio address.

He said he supports a plan that would not add to the budget deficit, touching on a major issue that remains unresolved little more than a week away from the first scheduled votes in Senate committees.

Congress still hasn't figured out how to pay for a health overhaul that could cost $1.2 trillion to $1.5 trillion or even more over a decade. Obama has put forward some ideas, including cuts to Medicare and Medicaid. Others he's suggested, including limiting some tax deductions rich people can take, have already gotten shot down on Capitol Hill.

And despite Obama's stated preference for a bipartisan solution, that's looking hard to achieve.

Although he didn't mention the issue in his radio address, Obama supports a new public insurance plan that would give all Americans the opportunity of getting government-sponsored care.

Private insurers are adamantly opposed, fearing they'd be driven out of business, as are most Republicans. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell spoke in the Senate almost every day this past week against the concept and reiterated the point in an interview with radio reporters Friday.

"The key to a bipartisan bill is to not have a government plan in the bill, no matter what it's called," said McConnell, R-Ky. "When I say no government plan, I mean no government plan. Not something described some other way, not something that gets us to the same place by indirection. No government plan."

Obama barely mentioned such opposition in his address.

"When you bring together disparate groups with differing views, there will be lively debate. And that's a debate I welcome," the president said. "But what we can't welcome is reform that just invests more money in the status quo _ reform that throws good money after bad habits."

I've noticed a theme today on cable news and progressive talk radio. Nearly all DEMOCRAT guests are parroting a talking point that goes something like this: "We can't afford a public option, you won't like it when we raise your taxes to pay for it, we're not letting you have a public option FOR YOUR OWN GOOD" The big question: Is this propaganda coming from the White House? Is the death of public option a done deal?

The sick, sorry fact is that when pubic option is shot down this summer in favor of a "Romney Care" private insurer only program, it will not be the fault of the Republicans but of our own Democratic senators. I' m 54 years old, a lifetime Democrat, and I'm all-too-familiar with how our party works. When our Dem legislators reverse their campaign positions and we call them out on their betrayal, they sneer at us and say, "What are you gonna do, voter? Where are you gonna go? Are you gonna vote Republican? You'll be back at election time." And like good little abused spouses, we come back. Why is it so hard for members of our party to just come out and say it: Senators like Max Baucus are ON THE TAKE, and spit in the faces of loyal liberal Democrats.

A lot of people are very much aware of everything you mention. One problem is that the PEOPLE in the Democrat party tend to have progressive ideas or in general want what is best for society in general. The POLITICIANS in the Democrat party are not progressive (with a few exceptions) and are corrupted once in office by lobbyists, campaign contributions, etc. I would say that campaign finance reform would take care of some of the problems but I don't think you could even get enough of them to vote FOR that reform because at some level they probably like the feeling of power received by virtue of their position. About the only thing we can do is keep voting out Congressional incumbents who don't vote in the best interests of "we the people" until they start getting the message OR we start another party with representatives who will listen vote for us.

If you want to have decent health care, humanitarian policies, Doctors who care about helping people, and not rip you off. Dont live in America. We will never have universal health care. America is run by big business. And its sickening to watch this whole display of futility. The whole world is shocked by the lack of compassion and apathy in relation to this, in this country. Even 3rd world countries. Hell Even Argentina has better health care then USA. Its just a rip off to get sick in the US. Dont get sick here.

I'm sure they will. And while the people of America are dying of some disease that doctors either refuse to diagnose or refuse to treat them for because it doesn't bring the hospitals money, I will live to be 100 in a land where if you need help, you can get it no matter how poor you are. I can't live in a country where the first thing that crosses my mind when I get sick is "can I pay for this" we are all people and should help one another. When you get sick, you should think about getting better, not whether or not your own species is going to help you or cast you out.

There was an interesting article in our Sunday Denver Post regarding Canada's health care system:
http://www.commondreams.org/view/2009/06/07-0

Once again, why do some people protest so much about a universal health care program for the US? I'm sick of all this greed here. We all need to stand up and insist on a country wide program. It just makes sense.

Are you really that selfish? .
Maybe you should do a little bit of research.
The United States pays more for healthcare than any other country in the world
and the rest of the world has universal healthcare. It would actually be cheaper for you and you would be helping other people. I'm seriously sure that your family is lovely, but we all have families too and they are lovely as well. I care about yours, I think that it is only fair, you should care about mine. (Especially if it is saving you money)

Yes, by all means. Let us look at the STELLAR examples of Medicare and Medicaid, who are already on a path to fiscal insolvency.

It is time to have a debate. Talk about how to control soaring medical costs. Universal health care is not free health care. How do we pay for this.....how do we ration health care. Obama needs to be honest and tell the public not everyone can get everything thing they want. If you want universal health care for all , then every one must have less.

Totally not true. Please watch SICKO by Michael Moore. It's explained very well.

And if having less means not having to file bankruptcy to care for my sick child, then so be it.

This country is Effed Up in regards to the Insurance Companies and the Health Care plans for All people.

I'll happily pay more taxes to have EVERYONE in this country get the best care possible, whenever, and however it's needed.

Cuba has better care then us!!!

You've got to get off the Michael Moore bandwagon. I've seen the film. Moore is a lefty ideologue with plenty of criticism and little knowledge of what he's talking about. He skims the surface of the subject and proposes easy fixes to complicated problems that have no easy fixes. He points to other healthcare systems (like France and Cuba) and makes them look good by ignoring their problems and making false statements about how they work ("Health care in Britain is free!" - this is a lie). Moore's solution to every problem is socialism, and he hates the free market. He's a populist filmmaker, not a problem solver, and he's made millions off gullible moviegoers.

I will like to see all in the USA pay 30% out of pocket cost like France.

"In France, up to 70 per cent of the cost of all treatment is covered by French social security [Securite Sociale, or Secu], with the rest paid directly by the patient."

I would like to see all paying a 20% tax for the French style insurance.

"Secu itself is funded by national insurance payments amounting to about 20 per cent of any worker's salary, deducted at source."

I would also like to see everyone needing to buy supplement insurance, like the French.

"But Secu may not pay much towards some therapies so, like almost everybody in France, the Courbets have private health insurance [called a mutuelle] to cover the difference. It explains why almost every family in France has a mutuelle."

I am going to enjoy listening to the whiners complain that a 20% tax and the need to then buy more insurance isn't the change they expected.

"The patient has ZERO costs in France. "

Wrong! The patient pays up front for healthcare in france (along with employer), and is only covered for some things so much buy additional insurance for the rest.

There is no true single-payer system on this planet.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:39 PM on 06/09/2009

Where in the world did you get your facts? If this is your opinion that is one thing but to make a quote that the patient has ZERO costs in France is just plain wrong. NOTHING IS FREE ANYWHERE. If France is so wonderful and you will pay nothing for health care why don't you move there and stop complaining the the United States of America.

ok, put 3 options on a ballot...
something GOP
Single Payer only
and something in between
then hold a national referendum & let the voters decide since we'll be paying for it.
We're paying for a war and a wall street bailout,
something this important to every single citizen
should not be left in the hands of a congress who will sell us out to the highest bidder.

If you read the following story of a young woman with Crohn's disease then I have no doubt that it will either confirm your convictions on the US needing universal healthcare or at least open your mind to it. Nobody should ever have to go through her struggles in a country that is capable of so much more...

while this story is tragic I do not see why another person should be forced to pay for her medical treatment. At the end of the letter there is a link so that if someone wants to freely give their money to help this woman and her family they can on a voluntary basis. Why should force be introduced to this?

It's Time To Deliver.... a single payer, non profit, health care system.... private health insurance providers and HMOs etc can still provide an extended range of service.... but they should be left OUT of the non profit, sinlge payer system... nothing else will work... if all employers are forced to provide health insurance then many of us will be out of jobs... we are walking a thin line as it is.

The french would be rioting in the streets.... and we meekly go about our lives hoping for better... it won't happen.
I am so tired of our "representatives" - whom we elect - who also have top notch health care - and who also get damn good retirement benefits - our representatives continue to do the bidding of insurance companies to the detriment of their country... is that traitorous?? they deliberately harm their electors, their constituents, the public of the country they are supposed to be helping...
the french would be rioting... and we call them wimpy.. hmmmm

In a poll taken last year, 65% of Americans support universal healthcare.

http://www.grahamazon.com/over/2008/01/poll-shows-majority-support-single-payer/

65%. That's nearly 3/4ths of the entire country.

Also, more than half of doctors favor universal healthcare: http://www.reuters.com/article/healthNews/idUSN3143203520080331

Almost 60%.

The American people want this. It's time for politicians to listen to the will of the people. There are two things holding us back: corruption of the insurance industry, and the archaic and abhorrent values of the far right.

In my book, it's safe to ignore both. Nothing changes the fact that the majority of Americans want this. And it isn't a small majority either. This is what America wants.

The rest of the world knows healthcare is a right. So do most Americans. This is basic morality here. We shouldn't let corporations and a small number of conservatives prevent what the majority of us want and what the majority of the world already has.

It's time for government to stop ignoring the will of the people and to do its job and fulfill its ethical responsibility by providing universal health care.

Nice points.

The First Amendment guarantees each of us the Freedom of Speech.

But only a lot of money can guarantee that we will be heard.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:07 AM on 06/08/2009

It's not as simple as that. As long as you demonize and dismiss opposing arguments from the right, you put on blinders and risk making a big costly mistake that could bankrupt this country (more than it already is).

All countries are experiencing healthcare cost increases, and the ones with universal coverage (like Canada, France, Taiwan, etc...) all have serious issues with availability, wait times, lack of modern technology, doctor shortages. In short, there's no proof that universal coverage is even possible.

So this debate needs to consist of real numbers and good estimates, not idealistic, uninformed, Michael Moore pie in the sky fantasies about perfect healthcare. This is not an easy problem and the "single-payer" mantra is just slogan.
