I Like ItI Don’t Like It

AP: WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama pleaded for action on his health care agenda, using his weekly radio and Internet address to focus on his domestic priority even while traveling overseas.

"It's time to deliver," Obama said Saturday.

His remarks were timed to gatherings in living rooms and coffee shops around the country by tens of thousands of people to discuss health care. The weekend events, organized by his campaign, were intended to try to build a groundswell of support for congressional action.

"If we do nothing, everyone's health care will be put in jeopardy," Obama said.

"Fixing what's wrong with our health care system is no longer a luxury we hope to achieve _ it's a necessity we cannot postpone any longer," said the president, who attended D-Day ceremonies in France on Saturday.

The first bill containing language to put in place his health care goals has begun circulating on Capitol Hill. Draft legislation from the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee would require employers to cover their employees or pay a penalty, and would guarantee coverage for all.

That parallels Obama's goals of lowering costs, ensuring choice, and providing coverage to some 50 million uninsured Americans.

Obama articulated those goals again in his radio address and in a videotaped message prepared for supporters at the community meetings.

Story continues below

"Any health care reform must be built around fundamental reforms that lower costs, improve quality and coverage and also protect consumer choice," Obama said in the radio address.

He said he supports a plan that would not add to the budget deficit, touching on a major issue that remains unresolved little more than a week away from the first scheduled votes in Senate committees.

Congress still hasn't figured out how to pay for a health overhaul that could cost $1.2 trillion to $1.5 trillion or even more over a decade. Obama has put forward some ideas, including cuts to Medicare and Medicaid. Others he's suggested, including limiting some tax deductions rich people can take, have already gotten shot down on Capitol Hill.

And despite Obama's stated preference for a bipartisan solution, that's looking hard to achieve.

Although he didn't mention the issue in his radio address, Obama supports a new public insurance plan that would give all Americans the opportunity of getting government-sponsored care.

Private insurers are adamantly opposed, fearing they'd be driven out of business, as are most Republicans. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell spoke in the Senate almost every day this past week against the concept and reiterated the point in an interview with radio reporters Friday.

"The key to a bipartisan bill is to not have a government plan in the bill, no matter what it's called," said McConnell, R-Ky. "When I say no government plan, I mean no government plan. Not something described some other way, not something that gets us to the same place by indirection. No government plan."

Obama barely mentioned such opposition in his address.

"When you bring together disparate groups with differing views, there will be lively debate. And that's a debate I welcome," the president said. "But what we can't welcome is reform that just invests more money in the status quo _ reform that throws good money after bad habits."

I urge everyone who wishes to see substantive health care reform to write the representatives in Congress. If we push for single-payer, at the very least we can get a viable public option.

We need to start the negotiation from a position on the extreme of or even more than what we expect. Anything less and the end result will be that much less.

Agreed. And should you also be a health care provider, we welcome you to look into and support Physicians for a National Health Program.

We have come full cycle on this issue. The only clear thing is that the insurance companies can not be trusted and deserve no place at the table regarding health care reform.

And the trust thing will be the insurance companies undoing.
I will feel no remorse when parasites like a lot of insurance companies are, are put out of business. The money we spend for their overhead & profit will benefit our country in more productive ways.

I remember President Obama after taking office, saying The business world was going to realize America was going to do business differantly.

I thought he meant business would be ran to HELP the American People.

Could he have meant , that with him Big Business would become evern more OUR Rulers , than with Bush ? Well he was truthing, It will be different.

I fear WE liberals are becomeing like Fox News was with Bush. Following like sheep as "our GUY leads us to the slaughter.

The business world is not a homogenous collective. It is a collection of disparate actors. Most business owners are small business owners who want their costs reduced. I take issue with your characterization. Individuals and businesses usually look out for their bottom lines. I have not seen anything to show that Obama is making them our rulers. Or that we are like sheep. There is much more discourse on this subject, including dozens of meetings in my city today, on heatth care put together by the successor to Obama's campaigm organzation

Going to the Health Care meeting next week. Do you honestly believe an Insurance company , owned and controled by International Investors cares a whit about an USA Citizen, over their Bottem line and the profit to their stockholders.
The bottem line is the only thing improtant to a business.

And Yes When International Investors lose their collective A$$eS and Wall Street Melts Down, and the losses are passed on to me and the middle class.
After they paid THE (not our !) Congressmen , then Yes we are being ruled. Poorly Rulled!

Well olmossy - you are certainly right. Obama shows us every day who he is, but nobody on the left will accept it. He shows disdain whenever he can for this country, he flouts the rule of law, doing whatever he wants to do, no matter what the law, or the constitution, or the bill of rights says. And he keeps spending, spending, spending all our futures away.

Yeah I'm put out with President Obama at the moment. But remember Just MY LONE disent is more than any Republicans ever said in Eight Years, about the War Criminal Bush, who lied this country into war, who threw away 4000 young lives . all so his Rebublican pals could get billions in No bid contracts. Then after Bankrupting this country gives his Bankster buddies 700Billion dollars as a parting gift. And bills it to the American People.
Remind us again Gary how much GW loved US.

Obama should use the process of reconciliation on this one. Not suggesting it should be used in every case (have to humor the petty republicans who are out of power), but on HealthCare -- oh yeah. Republicans, and some errant Democrats will never sign on to single payor because of the very issue everyone has been talking about -- it would under cut the funds they receive each year from these companies for their reelection campaigns and PACS.

Next to the Banks, the Health Insurance Companies own Congress. It's sad, really.

I don't understand the Republican opposition to single-payer health care. They say that a tax cut will increase jobs. Wouldn't eliminating the cost of health care from employers do it just as well?

The added benefit would be a healthy and more productive citizenry.

Does their opposition mean they do not wish to see a healthy America? Or does it mean they don't wish to remove a great burden from the backs of business?

Are you kidding?? First of all, all those who have often supported abortion rights on this website; that you should have control over your own body - kiss that goodbye when when we get socialized medicine. This is one more power play for Obama - and it will be the ultimate power. Power to have a say over every part of your life, power to tell you which medical procedures you can or can't have, power to keep older people from having medical procedures because they're old and they think it costs too much.

And D-V-H - where do you think the money for this kind of program comes from? Do you think the federal government has a job at Burger King or something to pay for this?

Where do you get this nonsense? Every other major industrialized country has "socialized" medicine and guess what ...they also have abortion for those who choose it, choice of doctors and other freedoms that we're still arguing over like a bunch of cavemen.

Private insurance doesn't pay for abortion, so your argument is fallacious.

I prefer to have a government body, where I have a vote, administer health care insurance.

I know that I have no say in what procedures my private insurance company will cover. Even if it is covered under my insurance there are still times that they arbitrarily decide to deny claims.

As far as costs, they overwhelming benefit of having a population with access to preventative care will reduce the overall cost of America's health care. The current for-profit nature of health insurance combined with provider's incentive to order unnecessary procedures in order to make a larger profit have driven us to the edge of financial ruin.

Tell me, Garybot, do YOU have insurance? Is it provided by your employer, and are your copays great for you? What happens when/if you lose your job?

Do you have private insurance? Do you appreciate that, on average, our premiums go up about 8% per year? Do you have kids just out of college who are paying about $200 per month, but when something happens, like a broken arm, they find that their insurance covers but a portion of that, leading to major debt for a beginner in the work force?

Or do you qualify for Medicare, which ensures that, during your last year of life, should you be ill, the greatest percentage of health care dollars will go toward expensive and nonsensical procedures because that's where hospitals are able to recoup their losses? And do you have Medicare supplemental insurance, which for anything good will run you almost $200 per month?

I don't quite understand where your tirades about "the boogiemen" and control comes from. But then again, I don't watch O'Reilly, Rush, Hannity, ad nauseum.

When oh When has the government ever administered anything on a large scale without incredible waste, redundancy and incompetence.

Do you really want the government telling you what procedure you can and cannot have?

Do you really want your choice of HCP taken from you?

America's HC system is NOT broken!! We are all suffering because of millions of Ilegals who come here to for health care... EVERYONE who get sick and wants it, gets Health care here in the US. NO ONE GETS TURNED AWAY.

Look around .. open your eyes... there are millions of Americans who want new cars instead of budgeting for health care. These are CHOICES that are made. Just like the idiot skier who goes into a clearly marked avalanch zone for the thrill... risk takers or the motorcyclist not wearing a helmet.
There is a reason socialized medicine is falling apart in other countries where its been tried.... it premise is simply wrong.. because of the few.. the many must suffer!

As far as removing a burden from business.. HOW DO YOU THING WE'LL PAY FOR THIS???
Vaule Added Tax (VAT), hidden fees on everthing and anything and these taxes will be REGRESSIVE... HITTING THE POOREST THE HARDEST.

After hearing different members of Congress calling the internet the internets, tubes, ethernet and other assorted wrong things, I've come to the conclusion that we are NOT electing the best and the brightest.

It seems they don't realize we are becoming better informed than they are on the issues.
From now on lets make it a point, if we write or phone our elected *representatives* lets have the numbers of dollars on hand given to them by the companies on the other side of the issue.
Let's surprise them with facts, something they seem to think we don't know.

After reading Robert Reich's blog post http://robertreich.blogspot.com//), I'm very depressed that we are going to get stuck with a "compromise" that merely pays lip service to the idea of a public option, never mind a true public plan. This will delay any real reform for years. Can you imagine? A proposal that the public option wouldn't kick in unless insurance companies fail to bring down costs and expand coverage? And just who, pray, is going to define those terms?

We need to tell the Congress that we aren't stupid enough to be snowed by lip service. They paid attention on the first bailout bill, so bombard 'em with mail and calls.

When allegedly sympathetic Democrats say "Can't get single payer through", what they're talking about is Obama's refusal to use the reconciliation process. His refusal to use the reconciliation process is about Obama's own political agenda, for his own political success, having nothing to do with getting the people's business done.

To be perfectly candid, the best thing for Democratic and Independent voters would be to use the reconciliation process for everything that Republicans are blocking. Obama's trying to build a center-to-right party, not populist, but corporate-friendly, without having to deal with the evangelical Christians or the base groups within the Democratic Party (women's rights, pro-choice, civil libertarians, gay rights, etc.). There's nothing visionary or statesman-like in that. And it's certainly not Of The People, By The People, And For The People.

A recent study says 1.5 million business and personal bankruptcies have been filed in the last 6 months. Another study says 60% of those filing bankruptcies have done so because of catastrophic medical bills. The number of bankruptcies filed in countries having a single payer/universal healthcare system such as Canada, France, Sweden, Great Britain, and yes, even Cuba? Zero!

The real reason we are getting this half assed healthcareless reform, our elected officals from top to bottom are in bed with the enemy of single payer!

Doesn't anyone else find it ironic that every time anyone talks about single payer there is a mention of a tax increase to cover the cost or that the cost would be in the trillions when we just spent, without blinking and eye, a trillion to bail out the rich, wallstreet, the economic thugs of banking, or 3 trillion on a trumped up war in iraq and Afghanistan. How about the cost of the Starwars defense shield that doesn't work? Or the new 1.5 million dollar drones that are killing people around the world and making more enemies for us?

This government reminds me of a dysfunctional family who buys everything it wants but can't find the money to buy what it needs, like healthcare for the People!

A change to single payer would actually get rid of a hidden tax. The jobs of people working in what is called the health insurance industry are not real. They are a form of welfare funded by what amounts to a tax on people using healthcare services, sanctioned by Congress in a way that avoids passing the money through the Treasury.
