Clinton: Obama Has Passed '3AM' Test (VIDEO)

First Posted: 07/08/09 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 02:25 PM ET

It's been fifteen months since Hillary Clinton charged that Barack Obama lacked the chops to handle a crisis phone call at 3 A.M. And the two have gone from bitter electoral rivals to partners in foreign policy.

On Sunday, Clinton revisited that defining attack affirming that Obama could answer that early morning call.

"Absolutely," the Secretary of State told ABC's "This Week." "And, you know, the president in his public actions and demeanor, and certainly in private with me and with the national security team, has been strong, thoughtful, decisive. I think he is doing a terrific job."

In what was her first Sunday morning interview since heading to Foggy Bottom, Clinton expressed gratitude for the post she held and the president with whom she worked. "It's an honor to serve with him," she said of Obama.

The segment also showed the former New York Senator to be meticulously detailed in her approach to some of the more vexing foreign policy issues she confronts. On Sunday morning, no issue was more glaring than that of the Palestinian-Israel conflict. Asked about Israeli concerns over the relatively hard-line approach the Obama administration is taking to settlement activity in the West Bank, Clinton framed her answer as a dose of tough love and political realism.

"We were very close [to a peace deal] in 2000," she said. "And it's heartbreaking to see where we are today. And we can't just stand by and expect time to work its magic. So that means, as the president said in his speech, and as he has said on several other occasions prior to it, that we have to do our very best to reassure Israel, to demonstrate our commitment to Israel's security, that the bonds we have are unshakeable and durable. But we do have a view about Israel's security. We see historical, demographic, political, technological trends that are very troubling as to Israel's future. At the same time, there is a legitimate aspiration of the Palestinian people that needs to be addressed."

Clinton went on to dismiss reports -- advanced primarily by Israel's government -- that an implicit agreement had been made with the Bush administration to allow for "natural growth" inside current settlements. And she largely side-stepped questions as to whether Obama's hard-line approach would bring down Benjamin Netanyahu's young government.

But Clinton made clear that the United State's support for Israel was secure. Asked what would happen should Iran strike the Jewish state, she replied, "There would be retaliation."

"And I think part of what is clear is we want to avoid a Middle East arms race which leads to nuclear weapons being in the possession of other countries in the Middle East," Clinton added. "And we want to make clear that there are consequences and costs. Now, let me just put it this way. If Iran is seeking security, if they believe -- and you know, you have to put yourself into the shoes of the other party when you negotiate -- if they believe that the United States might attack them the way that we did attack Iraq, for example --"

Stephanopoulos interrupted: "Before they attack, as a first strike."

"That's right," Clinton replied, "as a first strike. Or, they might have some other enemies that would do that to them. Part of what we have to make clear to the Iranians is that their pursuit of nuclear weapons will actually trigger greater insecurity."

Well, since this comment has been scrubbed, I'm reposting it and renewing its challenge.

How about a deal? Now that Hillary has spoken, the "he's only been in office for 5 months" defense needs to go away. If no deal, then Hillie Borden's comments need to be marginalized yet again. What say you?

The most generous politician ever.....Madame Hillary R. Clinton.
Her story will be written in history..

By the way, the haters , do not bother to write because I will not respond !

what is missing is the acknowlegement that in the US there is going to be a sort of civil war between the christian right nutcases on one hand and the zionists and the rest of us who what to see justice for the Palestinians . . . make no mistake we will have to fight hard to make sure Obama's words become a reality . .. .for far too long the US has censored any news that is anti-israel . . the mantra for far too long has been remember the holocaust . . . without looking at what the israelis have been doing with our weapons and money . . . the boogey man is us . . not the Muslim countries in the Middle East

What have the Palestinians in Gaza been doing with US dollars sent to them? I dont suppose that they are to be held accountable. Only Israel. They only used their dollars to dig tunnels and hid arms to attack Israel.

There is a big difference(billions) between what the Israelis get and what the Palistinians get. The Israelies used it for building walls, making settlements and buldozing Palistinian lands to build them. When the Palistinians fight for what they lost the Israelies cry foul and bring up the holocaust. The Israelis have lost all credibility when the world finally saw what was happening there. The only way they can get it back is if they give back their land and treat them the way they wanted to be treated when they came there enmass after WWII. Simple as that.

Hello mensch. This will be probably lost in the clutter of the many comments on this post. My point is that Hillary ran a fierce Democratic primary and according to many reports, she locked in at least 17 million votes to crack the glass ceiling along the way. Great result, but her politics were old and tired. Bill became bitter and ruthless after Ted and Caroline Kennedy gave their critical endorsements to Obama early in 2008. Hillary talked about landing under fire in a war zone, but it just wasn't true. Obama seriously respected Hillary's political history and candinancy for first female president. He offered her the job of Secretary of State. Hillary accepted, and she's doing good things so far.

I just came up with a brilliant solution for peace in the middle east.

Nobody attack anybody.

Subterfuge speaks to a great truth. Now that's funny. I would also recommend a couple of other things for peace in the Middle East.
1 Israel has a right to exist.
2. Arabs in Palestine have a sovereign right to their own homeland. They have children too.
3. Multi-national oil companies surrender control of geo-politics and short-term financial profits.
4. Halliburton / KBR / Blackwater corporate-oil storm-troopers should face international law.
5. Iran has a right to exist, and a right to develop a peaceful civilian nuclear energy system in full
compliance with UN safeguards, unlike the secret Israeli nuclear weapons program.
6. Iraq is a terrible on going disaster. Innocent civilian men, women and children are still being
killed and wounded every day. So too are US service men and women. This has to stop.

So when was the 3AM call scenario? And what MAJOR decision was made? is it suppose to be a reference to North Korea? Israel? He gave a speech and suddenly the world changed? Still looks the same to me, next month Hezbollah will launch a rocket... Israel will fire back. North Korea will fire more rockets and test more nukes and ignore the UN and US condemning it. I'm sure there will be another attack in Pakistan or India or god knows where else.

Nothing in the world changed (or will from his speeches) Yet like lemmings everyone lines up here and chants about what a great job he did with that 3AM call (because Hillary said so) but no one is stopping to wonder if he really did anything? Sheeple
12:12 AM on 06/08/2009
So maybe there was never an actual 3AM moment, but we all knew Hillary would have to recant that attack at some time or another. As for your ironically timed presumption that "Nothing in the world changed (or will from his speeches)", you may want to peruse the article in the scrollbar at the top of the page titled "Evidence Suggests Obama's Speech Already Undercutting Extremists".

I've learned not to expect much information or reason from those who call large swaths of the public "lemmings" or "sheeple".

Can you think of something constructive to contribute?

I really can't tell if Clinton is doing a good
job or not. President O, has helped her so much
by the way in which he has challenged each nation
to love and help one another, until I can't see anything
she has done, except visit some foreign countries.
He has passed the 3am test, but I knew he would
that is why I voted for him.

Obama supporter here. I never have liked the Clintons, specifically because of their effect on the overall party infrastructure when they were in charge. That said, I have full confidence in Secretary Clinton's overwhelming knowledge and capability to execute her job. In fairness to her, the President usually do the visible things. Secretary Clinton's & the State Department's successes are the Obama Administration's successes. Just because she doesn't hold the press conference and make the announcement does not mean that she wasn't behind the success.

It helps to have a President who is respected, thoughtful, knowledgable and considered to have integrity. It helps to have a Secretary of State who is smart, good with people, articulate, assertive, and loyal to her President. They work well together. They are just down right good together and they like each other, too, as well as each respects the other.

Clinton is doing well. Obama has an outstanding foreign policy/relations team behind him. Biden has made numerous trips overseas already (including the latest Lebanon and the Balkans) more than was expected, and he will stay active in that respect as it's his strength. And don't forget all that Mitchell is contributing contributing; he's also getting high marks. We have a lot going on in several countries and Obama needs all his experience at on board.

Neither have I, especially after miserable 8 years of suffocating wars, financial crisis, and embarrassing foreign policies. I am very proud of these two, not only are they great leaders, but also for their unrivaled patriotism. I can imagine how it must have been very difficult for both them to put the primaries differences aside for the sake the of country they both passionately love.

3am test- President Obama won presidency at 10:18pm Nov. 4, 2009

3am test - President Obama fights the party of no and gets passed the 787 billion stimulus package

3am test - Somalian pirates - kept his cool and allowed the gra no US causalities

3 am test - N Korea fires missles, President Obama doesn't threaten war he listens, watches and forms a plan with his national security staff.

3am test - For once, a US president says no to Israel

These are all tests for a new president.
09:55 PM on 06/07/2009
only a liberal would call "somalian pirates" a 3am test- more like a hickup

n korea - and the plan is? silence is usually the response of someone who does not know what to do (ie GW when he found out about 911 at the elementary school)

If he said what his plan is wouldn't he also be telling N Korea what the plan is? Then you would be saying what? Tell us all what you would say about him telling N Korea what the plan is. Go ahead tell us.

Wasn't if your great leader Rush, who blabbed every day how great of a test that pirate threat was, and how liberal Obama couldn't handle it. That was before Obama handled it. A day later Rush broadcasted that Obama had innocent Arab teens assassinated. Repub spin machine at its best.

Excellent point!

It seems that some would only consider it valid if it happened at exactly 3:00 AM.

The live picture of Pres O and SOS Clint was very powerful. I think this role for her is far better than VP and she is more useful. I for one am happy with the pick.

It's quite strategic too....every contender is in his cabinet so if he fails they all go down together.
