Ryan Howard, of the Philadelphia Phillies, just got the best-ever tour of the White House kitchen garden. White House chef Sam Kass showed Howard around and then started pulling green things out of the ground for the freshest veggie tasting possible.

Howard approved!

Friend of mine recently built a greenhouse, in order to maximise the growing season. Her tomatoes are already growing well, after coming from the greenhouse.

She planted the usual peppers, and herbs; but also opted to try out turnips, leeks, hot peppers, carrots, and some peas.

There is some small fencing for the peas to climb, and her husband also installed an underground watering system; using barrels with rainwater collected from the roof. He did all the landscaping himself.

This is a great system, which is 100% organic. Apart from weeding, it pretty much takes care of itself, and it’s great to know that it’s all fresh, natural produce. She didn’t plant any courgettes, which is unfortunate, because it’s so nice cooked up in a little butter, and herbs. The leeks she has, though, are great in soups.

I think I’ll ask her to try some more fruit next season too, it’s always nice to get free food, straight from the land.

Everyone is saying she probably picked Blue Hill but she sure doesn't have a refined palatte if she is drinking martini's with a meal like that!

What a delightful "commercial" on organic gardening and enjoying healthier food, and how we can't keep taking without giving back.

I was inspired to start an organic garden by the First Lady - now I'm going to look into the bee hive, I love honey. I already compost, sort of, my property is surrounded by a small forest on 3 sides - I just throw scraps into the woods.

Lol, that's right- try to criticize the First Family for keeping a GARDEN. *rolls eyes* I have the same arrangement at my house ( minus bees, too bad) only much smaller. The White House had its own self- sustaining gardens for years- this is a great tradition to get back to and a great tool for teaching young people to be healthier. Repubs are always going on about people being lazy and not taking personal responsibility for themselves or their health. A garden teaches kids the exact opposite- everyone should support this!

Why bother with these rightwing jerks. Ignore them. They have made it their mission to criticize everything the Obama White House does. So you might as well ignore them.

HA, I loved the athlete's reaction to the honey bee hive: "Oh snap, son!"

I got a wonderfully early start on my garden this year. I planted in mid February (out in the west Texas town of El Paso, where I did marry a 1/4 Mexican girl) had everything under little plastic tents and am now enjoying fresh, organic food. This was a great idea and model from the White House.

It is cheap to start a garden. I have one every year at my house. This is not a major expense.
