WASHINGTON — CIA Director Leon Panetta told a federal judge Monday that releasing documents about the agency's terror interrogations would gravely damage national security.

Panetta sent a 24-page missive to New York federal judge Alvin Hellerstein, arguing that release of agency cables describing tough interrogation methods used on al-Qaida suspects would tell the enemy far too much about U.S. counterterrorism work.

The CIA director filed the papers in a lawsuit brought by the American Civil Liberties Union. The suit has already led to the unveiling of Bush administration legal memos authorizing harsh methods _ among them waterboarding, a type of simulated drowning, and slamming suspects into walls _ and a fight over releasing long-secret photos of abused detainees.

"I have determined that the disclosure of intelligence about al-Qaida reasonably could be expected to result in exceptionally grave damage to the national security by informing our enemies of what we knew about them, and when, and in some instances, how we obtained the intelligence," Panetta wrote.

Panetta acknowledges in the court papers that the CIA destroyed 92 videotapes of detainee interrogations that took place in 2002. Officials have previously said that a dozen of those tapes showed the so-called "enhanced interrogation techniques," which critics call torture. The destruction of the videotapes has spurred a criminal investigation into why they were destroyed.

The tapes _ and the interrogations _ are also an issue in the ACLU's lawsuit.

The CIA is fighting efforts to force release of the documents, including dozens of agency cables. The cables, Panetta said, describe in detail the methods used on terror suspects, the information gleaned from them and what U.S. officials still did not know at the time the suspects were being questioned.

The CIA last month denied a request by former Vice President Dick Cheney to declassify secret memos that detail whether valuable intelligence was gained from the use of the harsh interrogation techniques. Cheney said the documents show that the tactics prevented terrorist attacks and saved lives, contrary to the Obama administration's criticism of the Bush-era policies.

President Barack Obama also said last month he would try to block the court-ordered release of photos showing U.S. troops abusing prisoners, reversing his position out of concern the pictures would "further inflame anti-American opinion" and endanger U.S. forces in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Since when did tro//s become children?

Like the waning days of WWII Germany... When you get down to 20% party ID, you have to exploit the youth.

Also, Republicans profile as suffering from arrested emotional development. Hence their tendencies with children.

What kind of "greater risk" could there be than death or horrible injuries? The torture that our own troops face every day, extended tours, crappy equipment, dangerous living quarters. bushie, cheney and the rest of the criminal cabal lied to endanger our troops and do not give a damn about them. They even voted down more money for the VA while talking out of the other side of their mouths about "supporting the troops." The criminals that are the republican party are reprehensible and so are the people who support them.

What if Cheney isn't lying about the intel gethered from "enhanced interrogations" of several captured high-value terrorists? What if that information actually proved instrumental in disrupting active terror plots and saved hundreds or even thousands of American lives as Cheney claims happened and that certain CIA memos summarize? What would that mean for Obama and the Democrats who oppose the use of these coercive methods for any reason in any circumstance?

Simple ... it would mean had Obama been President back then many innocent Americans would now be dead. Better hide those memos!

Exactly, and why is it that when another nation, say Saudi Arabia or Egypt engage in these practices it is torture clear and simple and to be condemned, but when an administration in this country does it, it is a topic open for debate, and something that has only been done by us just this once. How naive do they think Americans are?

You honestly don't believe that waterboarding is the extent of the Saudi and Egyptian interrogation programs do you?

Whether they release the papers or not, I think it's pretty safe to say that Americans basicly know that torture was committed in their names. So it would not surprise us to find out that thats what the papers reveal.

Kathleen Wells: Elaborate on why you believe there is no difference between the Obama Administration and the Bush Administration?

Congressmen Ron Paul: In style, they are different. The tone is different and I think there is a benefit to that. But his policies don't change. Ultimately, policies win out. The strong statements against Iran are still there. And, right now, going through our committee (the Congressional International Relations Committee/the Foreign Affairs Committee), stronger sanctions will be put on Iran - just looking for another fight. And we have taken the position we will not allow them to proceed on any nucl ear testing, even if it is within the law and even if it is done peacefully. We are not going to permit that. So no, that position hasn't changed.

Like I said before, the war is not winding down in Iraq. The violence is increasing. And war is expanding into Afghanistan, sending more troops there. And now we are taking on Pakistan. And, actually, the whole Pakistan thing is just a reflection of a very, very flawed foreign policy of ours. Because we chase the Tal iban around and some go into Pakistan and we urge the public government there to do this and that, we are just working very hard to have another war in Pakistan.

Ron Paul is right

Kathleen Wells: So, you do believe that we were committing torture in our interrogations in Guantanamo?

Congressman Ron Paul: I don't think the pictures I've seen were fictitious - the ones that were released a year or two ago. And, obviously, there are some more pictures of torture that they draw more attention to because they refuse to release them, which means that it must be a true indictment of what they were doing.

This whole issue raises a good policy point. During times of national crisis, what is the decision making apparatus that leads us to euphemisms like "enhanced interrogation techniques" to begin with?

Of all the questions that should have been asked by the neo-conmen behind closed doors at the outset of their policy disasters, the first one should have been:

"What will be the ramifications of this information if it ever gets out?"

If you know that something you're about to undertake is something you'll want to be kept a secret, then don't do it. Pure and simple. If you're afraid that someday - any day - the truth will come out, then that should be a clue telling you what you're about to undertake is a wrong policy and you should abandon it. If Obama/Biden run their terms in office using this simple guideline, we won't be faced with nationally embarrassing issues like this in the future. The idea is not to fight and defeat the entire planet. That war can't be won. The mission is to stop cultivating enemies like we don't have enough, because in the end, that's the only thing that will keep America safe.
