WASHINGTON — Former first lady Laura Bush says she's pleased that President Barack Obama nominated a woman for the Supreme Court.

"I think she sounds like a winner and a good nominee," Bush said of Sonia Sotomayor, the federal appeals judge Obama picked.

Mrs. Bush said in an interview broadcast Monday on ABC's "Good Morning America" that "as a woman, I'm proud that there might be another woman on the court. I wish her well." She was interviewed in Dallas, where the Bushes moved after their White House tenure.

On another subject, Mrs. Bush said her husband will have no comment on any Obama decisions. He feels that as a former president, "he owes President Obama his silence on issues and there's no reason to second-guess any decisions he makes," Mrs. Bush said.

I'll remember Laura Bush for her words of support for Michelle Obama when she was under pressure for her "For the first time in my adult life ..." . remarks. She was the only one on the right who did . I suspect that the First Lady will not forget that.

Thank you for reminding us of that. I think that Laura Bush is actually very moderate, if she is at all conservative. In fact, I've often considered her to be rather apolitical, who has been pushed to support various measures on the Republican agenda based on her husband's advocacy of those particular items.

I agree 100%. Laura has class and that elusive (to the Republicans) quality: empathy.

Laura Bush makes a complimentary statement about Judge Sotomayor and says her husband will not publicly criticize Obama. Yet some people react by insulting her. Geesh.

If you copy the behavior you denounce on the right, the result is hypocrisy and hypocrisy is the unattractive characteristic for which the majority has the least tolerance. Laura Bush has always stayed out of the gutter and it was unclear whether one of her daughters actually supported Obama. She refused to commit one way or the other.

She will be alright if she watches her step and does not kill herself falling ...thanks Laura, wish you had put the brakes on your husband, but after watching w. movie you had your hands full, but you knew what you were getting into. he point that Bush would do anything to win speaks volumes, and he had the conections to do it..

Mrs. Bush I've always been ambivalent about, especially in spite of some people calling her classy and graceful, however, this is a breath of fresh air coming from a Republican. The GOP echo chamber has said the antithesis of Mrs. Bush's sweet remarks and has denigrated the respectable jurist - Sonia Sotomayor. Nevertheless, what I'm more curious about is if the right wing will be consistent in their line of thinking and rhetoric. Will they call her (L. Bush) a sexist, feminist, playing the gender card and playing identity politics?! Let's look at her words: "as a woman, I'm proud that there might be another woman on the court. I wish her well." I highly doubt they'll be consistent in this regard, given their track record on integrity and dubious character Party traits. Furthermore, I don't think they should call her those roles I mentioned, because I don't believe them to be true or a negative thing, but I'm just seeking some kind consistency in their twisted ideological rhetoric.

Laura was never part of the Republican ideologue mentality.

Are you kidding me?

"never part of the Republican ideologue mentality." but she was certainly complicit. Her tacit approval was evident by the fact she was married to G.W. BUSH who was indeed a major cog in that Ideologue mentality. She is a typical republican stepford wife and her choice of husband is clear whom she shares her views with.

Someone should write a book contrasting the wives of Republican and Democratic presidents. The republicans' are typically vapid while the democrats' are intelligent, strong women.

What is vapid about Laura Bush?! She just made tasteful, gracious comment about the President and his appointee.

If this book is written, it better have lots of pictures, for your sake, or else you may not understand it.

Vapid - lacking liveliness, tang, briskness, or force : flat, dull

example sentence: Laura Bush, a gossipy, vapid woman, obsessed by her own elegance

Well, while our country was in the throes of a major depression with many Americans out of work and out of money, Laura wore about $200,000 in clothes and jewelry strutting down the campaign platform with Cindy McCain who wore about $300,000 of clothes and jewelry. One half of a million dollars for one night. Now do you get vapid and superficial and why this lady is considered, well, phony.

Didn't you just read this article? I found Mrs. Bush's comment as erudite as anything other first ladies have said. I'm at a loss as to your idea of vapid.

I have always liked Mrs. Bush. She was a wonderful first lady. I do not blame her for any decisions her husband and his team made.

She was the wife not the President.

So, in my view, people need to take a breath and stop being so mean and disrespectful.

She has a nasty side too. I remember her trashing Hillary in her book. And treating her sister in la, Sharon like a pariah, once Neil Bush divorced her.

I remember her giving a speech about using libraries and how important they were for the young to become educated in America. She gave the speech as her husband was across the city cutting funding to public libraries. I've thought of her as completely disingenuous since then...

I don't romanticize any human being. I have no idea where Laura Bush stands. She rarely gave her opinion on political matters which is a good thing considering the status of the GOP present day. Sometime ago there was talk of her writing a memoir...I would be interested in reading it. I am also interested in the last painting the Bush's added to the White House before they left office by the painter Jacob Lawrence of 'George Washington Bush' the first American settler with African heritage. That's about it...

Well, I will say it again. I remember Laura Bush giving one interview right after the election in 2000
She came out as a ProChoice advocate.
We never heard another peep out of her until the library speech.

That was a very nice comment, and Laura is spot on. I always thought Laura had more brains than Georgie. Of course, not taking anything away from Laura, compared to George, a rock has a higher intelligence level.

While I wish Laura would have been more vocal in the last 8 years, I understand why she stayed silent. All in all, I think she's very classy in her own right. I hope she's happier now.
