WASHINGTON — Former first lady Laura Bush says she's pleased that President Barack Obama nominated a woman for the Supreme Court.

"I think she sounds like a winner and a good nominee," Bush said of Sonia Sotomayor, the federal appeals judge Obama picked.

Mrs. Bush said in an interview broadcast Monday on ABC's "Good Morning America" that "as a woman, I'm proud that there might be another woman on the court. I wish her well." She was interviewed in Dallas, where the Bushes moved after their White House tenure.

On another subject, Mrs. Bush said her husband will have no comment on any Obama decisions. He feels that as a former president, "he owes President Obama his silence on issues and there's no reason to second-guess any decisions he makes," Mrs. Bush said.

She says her husband won’t be second-guessing President Obama on this, which can mean only one thing … his Magic 8-Ball is broken.

The country would have been so much better off with Barbara and Laura in charge instead of the Georges!

I have always liked her and her daughters. She has such a gentle touch and somehow anchored her husband in certain areas. Now the Cheneys, THAT IS A WHOLE DIFFERENT STORY.

Lauri, thank you so much for your endorsement, I'm sure it will mean so much to everyone, bless you oh sweet dear. May you never have anything to do with politics in the future so long as you live. You're a much better mouth piece for the endorsement of supreme court judge nominees. Thank you Ms G Dubyah. Did Georgie put you up to this or is an original thought dear?

Expired:
Laura Bush is the wife of a former civil servant, who was previously employed by the people of the United States of America to defend and protect the constitution. (He did a lousy job.)
I can think of no reason why the wife of that former public servant should be accorded any more respect than the wife of "Harry the retired mailman." We are not supposed to have royalty in this democratic republic. Lots of inequities 'round here, tho'.

She may not be the current First Lady, but the title is hers. That's the tradition.
Mr. Carter is still called President Carter. The title is for life. We're all smart enough to know who's who.

You're being sarcastic there, aren't you? I love it when people do that, becasue what you really mean is that she probably has heard about the election, and even read some articles about it, but you're suggesting otherwise. That is really clever and funny. Just really..you know, funny.

"American Wife" by Curtis Sittenfeld is a work of fiction based on true events, but really seems to capture the character and spirit of Laura Bush. I suspect that she would much rather have been almost anywhere else but in the White House. And, it's altogether possible that she is deeply troubled by the course of events over the last decade or so. Perhaps in the months and years to come she will speak her mind more often, free of the constraints of DC and her husband's job.

She knows that her husband was a tool of other interests. Some very Dark interests.

Of course she could never EVER EVER say that aloud.

Her husband, who is a bit dim whited, figured it out only near the end of his Presidency. It was too late. Even if he knew before, he did not have the skills to turn it around.

I bet even Bush "hisself" did not vote for the GOP.

DC,

Potentially you have a lot of information (sarcasm). You're suggesting that Bush II and LBush know that "Dark interests" [whatever that means] controlled the president.

By many standards he was an extremely poor president, using Evil as an excuse is merely another way of turning away responsibility.

I am not a repub, but I would like to see a gentler, saner side of the party just because the people out there spewing hate and fear are really tiresome. I've just stopped watching news for the most part because I am tired of all the craziness. Newt Gringrich is critizing the president's health care plan - who is this man and why should anyone care what he likes or doesn't like. He doesn't make policies.

As a fellow South Bronxite, Judge Sonia Sotomayor’s Supreme Court nomination fills my heart with ecstasy and anticipation. Regardless of one’s beginning or circumstance, the sky can be the limit, with hard work, dedication, and focus. Cardinal Spellman, Princeton, and Yale…can’t do much better than that!

Judge Sotomayor represents the sum of her unique life experiences and, as such, would certainly know better than someone White what it means politically, sociologically, economically, and culturally to grow-up and live life as a Latina in America. Similarly, as a White Southerner, Senator Jeff Sessions (Alabama) represents the sum of his unique experiences and, as such, would certainly know better than a Puerto Rican what it means politically, sociologically, economically, and culturally to grow-up and live as a Caucasian male in America. Differences in ethnicity, cultural heritage, and life experiences does not automatically render someone incapable of being able to objectively assess a particular situation, respond impartially, do the right thing, and offer a fair and unbiased opinion. Because she is Puerto Rican does not mean Judge Sotomayor will behave as an automaton and allow her experiences (good or bad) to subjectively influence how she interprets the law and renders judgments involving Hispanic people. Conversely, just because he hails from a confederate and segregationist stronghold that championed George Wallace, celebrated Bull Conner, and pioneered racist policies specifically designed to brutalized and subjugate Black Americans does not mean Senator Sessions will embrace and seek to advance the racist ideology of his forefathers, behave as a preprogrammed automaton, and allow his deep-south roots and correlated experiences to prejudice or interfere with his ability to make objective, race-neutral decisions. If this is not the case, then both Judge Sotomayor and Senator Sessions should immediately resign.

Carl Rove stated that Judge Sonia Sotomayor lacks the intellectual ability to sit on the Supreme Court. What makes Carl Rove (high school graduate and Bush minion) competent to critique Judge Sotomayor’s intellectual attributes? Let’s review the facts. After graduating valedictorian from New York’s prestigious Cardinal Spellman High School, Judge Sotomayor graduated summa cum laude from Princeton, and later received a law degree from Yale, where she was also elected Editor of the distinguished Yale Law Journal. In comparison, Bush was a legacy admission to Yale and barely graduated with a paltry C average. Historically, why are minority candidates (Thurgood Marshall, Clarence Thomas, and Sonia Sotomayor) nominated to the Supreme Court criticized by White republican pundits as being intellectually incompetent? Even though Judge Alito was affiliated with a racist organization (he denied knowing the group was racist) while at Princeton and had an unremarkable tenure as a Yale law student, not one republican has ever questioned his intellectual ability and racist background.
