Laura Bush: Sotomayor "Sounds Like A Winner"

WASHINGTON — Former first lady Laura Bush says she's pleased that President Barack Obama nominated a woman for the Supreme Court.

"I think she sounds like a winner and a good nominee," Bush said of Sonia Sotomayor, the federal appeals judge Obama picked.

Mrs. Bush said in an interview broadcast Monday on ABC's "Good Morning America" that "as a woman, I'm proud that there might be another woman on the court. I wish her well." She was interviewed in Dallas, where the Bushes moved after their White House tenure.

On another subject, Mrs. Bush said her husband will have no comment on any Obama decisions. He feels that as a former president, "he owes President Obama his silence on issues and there's no reason to second-guess any decisions he makes," Mrs. Bush said.

I don't blame the Bush administration for their knee-jerk reaction over the attacks of 9/11 - all hell broke loose that day and caught them with their "pants down." But, going into Iraq and making the case for it on all of the new shows was a huge mistake.

The sad part is that Cheney won't let it go and just fade into obscurity, and now he has his daughter lying as well.

I guess people want to give Laura a pass, but she is married to the worst president of modern times, an AWOL soldiers, and the grandson of a Nazi war financier money launderer. Prescott Bush did hang with other Nazi war money financiers and money launderers. Little Boy Bush was and is a war criminal, and the nation's biggest loser, therefore, anyone, ANYONE Laura speaks of has to be better than that escaped criminal husband of hers. I do believe it would be best for Laura if she would shut up, but no, she is on the lecture circuit. GMAB! As if she has anything of interest to say. She is no different than Tony Soprano's wife, Carmela.

I didn't hold Pat Nixon responsible for her husband, or Lady Bird Johnson for hers. This decline into personal villification of First Ladies is a sad aspect of our society.

I assume that, since you believe it appropriate to criticize Mrs. Bush's appearance, you also find it appropriate when people make disparaging comments about Michelle Obama's appearance. Or, for that matter, your appearance, or that of your friends and family.

Come on, people - can't we all try to be a bit better than this?!

She is the wife of a former Failed co-president to Cheney and yet you refer to her as Mrs, Bush and First Lady, but FLOTUS is referred to as Michelle. Wow, go figure. No respect.

I for one often refer to Michelle by her first name because I feel a connection and affection for her that I have not felt for other First Ladies. I suspect that's true for a lot of people, and something to which she would not take offense.

Agreed. Many of us feel a connection with Michelle, as well as affection for a truly likable, down-to-earth first lady. Mrs. Bush always seemed aloof and above-it-all; I always respected her, but never felt anything near affection for her or a connection with her.

I pondered this as well... is it disrepectful to refer to Mrs. Obama as Michelle? Her down-to-earth personality and style seem to ressonate with being called Michelle, except in more formal circles. Laura Bush on the other hand has a more matronly style. She never seemed very happy in the White House, as if being held captive - even when I watched the Christmas at the White House specials.

She's from a different era, and I am glad to see her pleased with the Sotomayor nomination. Especially since she references it from a woman's point of view.

I don't think Michelle OR Barack have a problem with people referring to them by their first names.
It makes them comfortable and welcoming.
I've always usually referred to the POTUS's and FLOTUS's by their first and/or last names.

It would be fascinating to find out what Laura Bush really thinks about everything that is going on with the Republicans. George kept her on a tight leash for a long time, but now that they are just normal citizens living in luxury in Dallas, Laura can speak freely.
