I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Pawlenty Governor

Having previously attested to the belief that Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty has real potential to take on a leadership role in the GOP, I'm naturally chagrinned to see TPaw out in public, doing things that make me look foolish for saying so. Via Hotline On Call comes the news that Pawlenty recently addressed the College Republicans National Convention, and offered up a metaphor that he maybe should have thought through a little better:

Opening his remarks with a reference to NBC's "Inside the Obama White House" special, Pawlenty told the gathering of about 200 students, "I haven't seen something that staged since that half-naked Austrian fell onto the face of Eminem at the MTV music awards."

"Eminem was mad," he continued, to laughter and applause. "And so, just like Eminem getting dumped on, we've got to kind of regroup. We've got to continue to fight. And we've got some things worth fighting for."

In the first place, Pawlenty seems to be unaware that Eminem was not genuinely "mad," but that the stunt was "all rehearsed, right down to Eminem's mock disgust." Beyond that, how far does Pawlenty want the College Republicans to do in "regrouping," Eminem style? Does he want them to spit insulting rhymes at Sarah Palin? Threaten their spouses with bodily harm? Sue their mothers? Naturally, if this leads the College Republicans to do a duet with Elton John, I'll be the first to suggest that such a pairing would, indeed, make for an enchanting night of song.

Anyway, I am going to infer from his dislike of the Bruno/Eminem stunt that Pawlenty is not bullish on the Tea Party movement.

Would college Republicans have been watching MTV music awards, let alone even know who Eminem is?

Off topic but I must confess to having a little Conservitiveness in me, even after all these years. I find Cohen's "cringe comedy" repulsive. There, I said that out loud.

Timmy P's repulsive too.

Republicans do have an @ss in their face, but it's their own @ss. I don't know how they got contorted that way, but as long as they are there, how about pulling some ideas out of that orifice.

The entire premise that the GOP needs to "regroup" is built on the false premise that just retooling, or looking different actually means you are different. The entire movement of now President Obama and the Democrats was a real change, not something made up as the GOP wants to do. For change to be real, it has to happen naturally, it can't be forced. The only way the GOP will really change is when someone new and refreshing, with original ideas and the ability to bring people in to his or her way of thinking makes their way to the head of the party. If you look at the Democrats, Obama naturally became the leader of the party. When people think Democrats, they think Obama. When people think GOP, they think Rush Limbaugh, Newt Gingrich, George Bush, same place same thing. No "plan" will create the natural change they are looking for. This is their dilemma.

Ummm... so does that mean republicans are just pretending to be mad, too. Bye, Bye Gov.

In an attempt to relate to his audience, he came off just as left field as Hillary Clinton's House of Representatives being run like a plantation.

Lack of authenticity is becoming the GOP trademark. And, yeah, the plantation remark was pretty silly.
