NEW YORK — "American Idol" runner-up Adam Lambert has landed the cover of Rolling Stone magazine, where he talks about sex, drugs and his "Idol" experiences. The 27-year-old singer from San Diego acknowledges in an interview that he's gay, and says it shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone. "I'm proud of my sexuality," he says. "I embrace it. It's just another part of me."

Lambert says he was inspired to audition for the Fox network singing competition after having a "psychedelic experience" at the Burning Man festival in Nevada. There, he says, he experimented with "certain funguses."

"I knew that it was my only shot to be taken seriously in the recording industry, because it's fast and broad," he says of "Idol."

Lambert emerged as an early front-runner and judge favorite, thanks in part to his soaring vocal range.

When he moved into the show's Bel-Air mansion with the other finalists, he roomed with Kris Allen, who won the "Idol" title over Lambert last month.

"I was like, `Oh, (bleep), they put me with the cute guy,'" Lambert says. "Distracting! He's the one guy that I found attractive in the whole group on the show: nice, nonchalant, pretty and totally my type _ except that he has a wife. I mean, he's open-minded and liberal, but he's definitely 100 percent straight."

According to Rolling Stone, Lambert was open about his sexuality backstage at "Idol." In March, photos surfaced online of Lambert kissing his ex-boyfriend.

"Going into `Idol,' I assumed, `OK, people are going to talk,'" he says. "I mean, I've been living in Los Angeles for eight years as a gay man, I've been at clubs making out with somebody in the corner. But photographic evidence? Didn't count on that. Wasn't ready for that."

He says he worried that a public announcement would overshadow his singing, so he decided not to respond and largely kept his personal life under wraps on the show.

"I'm an entertainer, and who I am and what I do in my personal life is a separate thing," he says. "It shouldn't matter. Except it does. It's really confusing."

Lambert says he isn't interested in being the poster child for gay rights. "I'm trying to be a singer, not a civil-rights leader."

He also reveals that he began smoking pot and tried Ecstasy for the first time while performing in a European production of "Hair" in his early twenties.

"I've finally checked in to my self-worth for the first time in my life, and the fact that it has coincided with `Idol' is so sweet," he says. "I mean, I still have moments where I think, `Oh, my skin is terrible, and I'm a little fat, I should really go to the gym more.' But for the most part, when I look in the mirror now, I finally see someone who can do something cool."

You're right.

That same totally unoriginal observation has been posted more than a hundred times on this single thread today. And each person posting it seems to think he or she has broken new satirical ground.

Very tired.

Congratulations! You are the 1000th person on this thread to bemoan the sarcastic references about the obviousness of Lambert's gayness. How completely unoriginal, but you get points for humorlessness.

This was a huge issue to Bill O'Reilly. Lambert shouldn't have to announce he's gay and he's proud but frankly there's a part of the nation that's still not ready. Lambert is not the problem.

The geniuses here who like this moderately talented non-artist are the same people who buy Fall Out Boy CDs and think they're edgy and who blather inanities like 'Oh! You're such a rock star!'

There are many signs that our civilization is washed up and finished, but the fact that this new generation has not an ounce of rebellion or originality in it, is the most obvious one to me. I'm 45 now, shouldn't this generation be shocking me w/ their music by now? Someone tell Trent Reznor to turn off the lights when he leaves cuz he's the last rock star as far as I'm concerned.

All these phony rock stars out there make me sick.

Hey Duck, I could'nt agree with you more about the wannabes in this world, but FOB is talented, they just have to teach their lyricist, Pete Wentz to shut the 'f' up and play bass. I am your age and I dig almost anything, but I refuse to have anyone try to shove garbage like 'American Idol' down my throat. I have never liked that show and what it demands of it's participants. (Want a good laugh? Download the 'contract ' all contestants are to sign BEFORE they audtition. It's a HOOT!) And as long as Disney promotes the illusion of purity with all of it's child performers, parents will spend butt loads of cash on their kids choice or 'music'. Come let's be honest; even if they were promoted as adults, the Jonas Bros suck.

I sometimes long for the days of hard core punk and when Patti Smith would command the stage with her poetry and the Talking Heads were the best band at CBGB's. But music will go through it's trends and it's up to the consumer to listen to something else. By the way, Trent may be the last rock star, and that's all fine and good, but Joe Strummer was a god and Green Day for intents and purposes are okay, but they're the poor man's Clash.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 06:30 PM on 06/09/2009

FOB is talented, but not edgy. Green Day is just so-so, the music sounds kinda tame...punk should sound like it's on the verge of completely falling apart. Can't hold a candle to the Pistols, and Ramones or even Dead Kennedys. Last decade we had NIN's Downward Spiral, Nirvana's Nevermind, Janes Addiction's Nothings Shocking...this decade we've got Pink proclaiming she's still a rock star. It's over people.

Zofmo, taste? We're talking rock n roll ... thanx for making my point GrandPa. Enjoy your Plain White Ts CD.

Who cares if he's gay we all knew that allready the pics of him kissing guys are all over the net, he is what he is at least he doesnt denie it, he seems to be comfortable in his skin and thats alone is a gift that few have, he is trully gifted and most people wont hold him being gay against him http://movies09.com/adam-lambert-admits-the-obvious-%e2%80%9ci%e2%80%99m-gay%e2%80%9d.php if they do, then there the ones with the problem

Maybe homophobia would stop if gay people quit acting like homosexuality was so special and unique that it required public pronouncement. It's no big deal!!!!!!!!!!!!

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 05:26 PM on 06/09/2009

Homophobia wiill stop when people stop acting out of fear, and stop blaming the victims of their fear.

Excuse me? You really don't know much about Gay History, do you? Gay Pride which is celebrated in June commemorates the Stonewall riots in NYC. These riots steamed from society forcing gays to live underground and illegally.

Now, today we are being targeted by religious groups that say we deserve AIDS. Do you think that this is the time to stop being proud of who you are?

What about Black History? Are you proud of who you are and what it took to get you where you are today?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 05:58 PM on 06/09/2009

You don't, but so many people do. They care enough to do shows about it on Faux News. They care enough to vote against the "gay guy." They write about how "America isn't ready for a gay Idol."

Homophobia would stop if people would stop giving time/energy to hatred and intolerance!

Is speaking out for equal rights wrong?

Maybe if they were treated like equals, they wouldn't need to speak out.

And BTW HE WAS ASKED! - You think he should lie? You think because he answered he is Broadcasting?

You must be a homophobe or you would not be making up these false excuses to attack the topic being discussed.

Agreed totally. I have friends who are gay and happy with who they are.
They do not find it necessary to " go public " and impose there sexuality
on others. We are who we are and must respect each other at all times,
but first we must respect ourselves.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 05:46 PM on 06/09/2009

No one is imposing their sexuality on you. If you feel that way then you are GAY. Straight people don't have to impose their sexuality on people, because the media already does. How many straight relationships do you see on TV? In the movies? How many gay ones do you see?

Structural Violence. Look it up you uneducated dorks!
