Conan O'Brien Reaches Out To Hispanic Viewers With Telenovela, Noches De Pasion (VIDEO)

Huffington Post   First Posted: 07/10/09 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 02:25 PM ET

Last night, in a stunning display of bravery Conando O'Brien rescued a damsel in distress from an evil group of men with no respect for the laws of god or man. Conando (aka Conan with a mustache) walked into his lady love's restaurant at exactly the right time. She had found herself in trouble when a group of no-goodniks had grabbed her after a night of harassment. Just as her virtue was about to be wrestled from her, Conando came to her defense and, with the help of some omelet pans, defeated the dastardly trio.

Conan's been doing his thing longer than Colbert. They are friends anyway. Friends don't get bent out of shape about this crap.

When does the funny part kick in with Conan? Or is his humor simply his hair style?
12:48 AM on 06/10/2009
Wow, it seems a lot of people think this is a rip-off of whatever Stephen Colbert does. I never watch the Colbert Report, but I know Conan has been doing this since before the Colbert Report even first aired -- unless Colbert did it on the Daily Show or something.

Somewhere on the Daily Show website there are pictures of Colbert, O'Brien and Stewart dancing like fools; and then there are video clips on Colbert's show where they are all together again being silly. They are all apparently good friends. I'm trying to find the link to the picture that moves with them dancing. It's pretty funny.

What was suppose to be funny about that, his mustache, the whites of
his eyes or his mangled Spanish?
02:50 AM on 06/15/2009
All three. Plus the insane level of mellow drama. Plus Andy Richter's even more mangled Spanglish. Plus repeated stock footage of the man falling out of the building. Plus the ridiculous of it all put together.

I dunno... I thought it was pretty good at least.

He looks just like Esteban Colberto, but Colberto is funnier as the sleek presenter con chicas y todo.

esteban? i recognize that name.

Ain't he that mysterious guy who sells blue guitars on QVC?

Not that I watch QVC, of course. I think I must have overheard it in a bar or something...

Colbert's been doing the Esteban Colberto character since December 2006 on his Colbert Report and I believe the Character appeared in a few skits on the Daily Show before the Colbert Report went on the air.

August 2006, actually :)

Conan has been doing Conando for a looooong time. I don't remember exactly when it started, but I'm pretty sure it was before 2006.
12:45 AM on 06/10/2009
You're right, Conan has been doing this since well before 2006.

He's been doing that Conando skit for awhile now. I really like this sketch. I do think that if he's going to speak Spanish, then maybe on the bottom of the screen it should have the English translation during the whole sketch, not just some parts of it. Lots of us don't know the Spanish language.

I don't think the plot's too complicated for you to at least try to figure out yourself what they're saying.
02:48 AM on 06/15/2009
Eh, I dunno. The untranslated stuff is pretty much basic high school school Spanish. For example, "Nosotros tres, tu eres uno" translates into "We are three, you are one." Not too hard.

And, yeah, there's also the fact that you could pretty much follow the plot with the sound off anyway. :-p

Guys, the "Conando" sketch dates back to at least last year, and Conan has made references to his telenovela alterego for years. This is not a ripoff of Esteban Colberto.

Very reminiscent of the Carson days with the set and costumes. I'm thinking he's trying to bring back a little of the old school to the show.

Conan 1st did this skit last year. I dont know when Colberto debuted his but If it was this year he is copying off Conan.

Watching this last night, I was thinking that it's either a homerun for Conan and an instant staple of the show or Conan will have to issue an apology by the end of the week. Love it or hate it.

You never watched Late Night? He's been doing Noches de Pasion for a long time.
02:52 AM on 06/15/2009
Ha ha. yeah. And before that he used to just don the mustache and speak in dramatic Spanish from the desk. It's been fun to watch the bit evolve over the years.

I loved this sketch last night. Conando was too funny. It was almost as good as his Bollywood song number. I wish I could find that clip.
