George Tiller Clinic Closes

WICHITA, Kan. — George Tiller's slaying has accomplished what anti-abortion activists had tried to do for decades: The doors to his Kansas clinic will shut forever. The announcement Tuesday from Tiller's family was a tainted victory for the nation's anti-abortion movement. For years, it made Tiller the focus of protests, legislation and legal attacks.

His death reignited a public debate over some abortion opponents' tactics and left many wondering how it will transform the abortion battleground.

Now that Tiller and his clinic are gone, the epicenter of the anti-abortion movement is less clear. Kansas has long been a lightning rod in the hot-button social issue _ and in 2002, the leader of the anti-abortion group Operation Rescue even moved his organization to the city to wage an aggressive campaign. With the clinic's doors closed, the movement loses one of its key protest symbols.

"Part of what is a tragedy about this is that violence has achieved its objective," said Nancy Northup, president of Center for Reproductive Rights. "There is a concerted, ongoing effort at harassment and restriction with an aim to make doctors leave the field."

Operations at Women's Health Care Services Inc. were suspended following Tiller's death last month. In a statement released by his attorneys, Tiller's family said relatives had chosen to honor him with charitable activities instead of reopening the clinic.

"We are proud of the service and courage shown by our husband and father and know that women's health care needs have been met because of his dedication and service," the family said in the statement. They did not elaborate on their reasoning to close.

Tiller, who had said women with access to prenatal testing needed options in case those tests uncovered severe fetal abnormalities, was shot to death May 31 while serving as an usher at his Lutheran church. Prosecutors have charged abortion opponent Scott Roeder, 51, with first-degree murder and aggravated assault in Tiller's death.

For now, Operation Rescue has no plans to leave Wichita and the group's leader, Troy Newman, called the family's decision to close the clinic "bittersweet." He said his group wants to close abortion clinics but, "I want to see them close through peaceful, legal nonviolent means."

Story continues below

Tiller's clinic had long served as a rally point for abortion opponents. Most protests were peaceful, but his clinic was bombed in 1986 and he was shot in both arms in 1993. In 1991, a 45-day "Summer of Mercy" campaign organized by Operation Rescue drew thousands of abortion opponents to Wichita and there were more than 2,700 arrests.

Tiller's clinic was one of a handful of clinics across the country that perform third-term abortions. Kansas state law allows abortions on viable fetuses after the 21st week only if carrying the pregnancy to term would endanger the mother's life or cause a "substantial and irreversible impairment" of a major bodily function. Courts have interpreted a "major bodily function" to include mental health.

Colorado doctor Warren Hern, Tiller's longtime friend who also performs late-term abortions, called the closing an "outrage." He said he knows that for the rest of his life, he will be a target of the anti-abortion movement.

"How much can you resist this kind of violence?" he said. "What doctor, what reasonable doctor would work there? Where does it stop?"

At least one doctor, LeRoy Carhart, had expressed an interest in reopening Tiller's clinic. Following the family's decision to shut it down, the Nebraska doctor said he wouldn't abandon his effort to make sure third-term abortions are available but did not elaborate on his plans.

"I completely understand and sympathize with this decision," he said in a statement. "I am currently exploring every option to be able to continue to make second and early medically indicated third trimester abortions available."

Reaction to the clinic's closing ranged from sympathy from abortion rights supporters to relief from some anti-abortion groups. Planned Parenthood Federation of America saod the decision to close was difficult for the Tiller family, while Randall Terry, who founded Operation Rescue before a falling-out with the organization, said "good riddance" when he heard about the closing.

"If his replacement was going to continue to kill late-term children, the protests would continue, the investigations would continue, the indictments would continue," said Terry, who stopped using the Operation Rescue name following numerous lawsuits in 1990. He said history would remember Tiller's clinic as it remembers Auschwitz and other Nazi concentration camps.

Others were more subdued. Mary Kay Culp, executive director of Kansans for Life, said it was "really tragic" to have violence close the clinic when the state's medical board was pursuing a complaint that could have cost Tiller his license.

The complaint before the State Board of Healing Arts, which licenses and regulates doctors in Kansas, alleged Tiller violated a state law that required him to obtain a second opinion from an independent physician, and it accused him of engaging in unprofessional or dishonorable conduct. A board spokeswoman has said since the shooting the case probably will be closed.

Said Newman in an e-mail: "Operation Rescue was just two months away from getting Tiller's medical license revoked, and that would have accomplished the same goal."

Why are all these white, male talking heads on t,v allowed to fuel the h@te-speech?
Why are they allowed to freely say lies like -

"women are k//ling innocent babies"...
"doctors are ki//ling the unborn children"

Why are the talking heads allowed to freely suggest that women are volunteering themselves up to
have babies k/lled?
They say much of the same h0 r-ible speech that you can read on thru these threads....freely.

Last I checked NO ONE has been convicted of anything.
Where are all these millions of female mass m0rderers?
Shouldn't women be tried first in court before stating that we are "taking life".
And if we are such..barbaric...m0rdering...women that make these ev/l crimes against
babies...how can we even be allowed to VOTE?
How can anyone trust the choices from millions of female baby k/l ers?...
Women seem to be brainwashed..incapable...weak...k/l lers in the eyes of all these "newsies".

This is outrageous!
This h@te speech continues on everyday...and it's acceptable..especially with Joe Sc.bough.
ENOUGH!

Well I guess those women who are irresponsible enough to have fetuses with congenital defects like, oh, missing brains, will just have to live with their choice and carry their mistake with them for a few more weeks. (sarcasm OFF for the nuance impaired, though anti-choicers can't exactly be credited for their skills at understanding nuance, no matter how elementary it gets...)

.08% of all abortions are late term. As in "less than 1/10th of 1 percent". I'm not real good at math but that doesn't seem like very much.

It's bad enough painting women who seek abortions as irresponsible fun-lovin' wenches who were just too lazy to buy a condom. The miniscule percentage who neede late-term abortions are not there because of some sort of character defect. "Dang giant bump I just noticed! I should pay my bar tab and then head off to see Dr. Tiller".

The problem with most abortion "foes" is
a) they are morally inconsistent hypocrites
b) they are not actually interested in solving the problem (see A, above).

It's all part of the mean & bitter new form of Christianity promulgated by the right wingers to distract their base from real problems like, oh say, having lost their job with one of those big responsible automakers who would take in all the unwanted babies if they weren't too busy making insults to the planet like H2's. "What would Jesus do, if he were a dick?"

My earlier comment to this effect was never published, so here goes again. I used to call myself pro-choice. I used a lot of the same excuses that many of you do as to why abortion should continue unabated, while claiming to be "personally opposed". I thought abortion should be safe, legal and rare. Then I realized the irony. How can a procedure that deliberately takes the life of a human being ever be called "safe"? How is it dignified to kill your own offspring? How "rare" is a procedure that has taken more lives than all US war American fatalities combined? Abortion, whether you want to face this fact or not, is America's holocaust. As a woman, I find it shameful that this is the best some expect of us when faced with difficult pregnancies. Roe v Wade is the law of the land. I cannot and would not interfere with anyone's "right" to an abortion, but I cannot stand by silently while this tragedy continues to the tune of 50,000,000 and counting. If even a fraction of those are for dysgenetics, there is a genetic crisis in this country of gigantic proportions that is being ignored. But of course that's not the case and the lies, the deceptions and the tragedy continues. Sad

The statistics on genetic problems are widely available - 1 in 800 Down Syndrome, 1 in 150,000 anencephalic, etc., etc. The only way in which a person could be misinformed on these is to refuse to look at the facts. Is abortion a horrible thing? Sure, even for the person who choses the procedure it's usually awful. However the way our society is structured right now penalizes women for having children, provides very little protection for women, deliberately withholds and discourages those services which would make it easier for women to rear their children, and then acts astonished when women say they have to end their pregnancies.

Do you really want to do something instead of just 'standing by silently'? How about making efforts to include all pregnant women under government medical insurance? Fully funding Head Start for all children who qualify? How about all-year school to cut down on the daycare problem? Severe penalties for domestic violence directed towards pregnant women or when children are present in the home? There are lots of things that could be done to cut down on the number of abortions, things which would be 'for the children', but nobody seems to be interested in doing them.

Yeah, we're so selfish. We want public programs and social services that protect children, make sure they have health care, food, education, etc. We oppose unjust wars where children are killed and maimed or left without mothers or fathers. We support medical research that can cure diseases and save lives. You're right--we're monsters! (major eye roll)

I always found it odd that babies are "innocent" right up until the moment they are born. Then they immediately become sinners who need to be saved and baptized of their sins.

Look, lets get real here. Nobody's going to outright condone Dr. Tillers mur.der, yet many anti-choicers see this clinic closing as a good thing. I'd like to bring up a few things. First of all, this clinic provided all family-planning services, including birth control, pre-natal care and cancer screenings. This is a shame its going to be harder for women in Kansas to get these services. Second, most people want to see abortions reduced, not just anti-choicers. We can work together towards reduction.
I know, some of you will say "I don't want reduction, I want none!" Ok, but how do you get there? Overturn Roe v Wade, and the states still get to decide. South Dakota, a red state, had a chance to put a ban on abortion, and it didn't pass! If a red state didn't ban abortion, why do you think any will? All it will do is cost a lot of money and cause a lot of fighting.
Reduction is all we can work on, and that takes cooperation. Are you with me conservatives?

I agree with you-and I certainly would like to see a reduction but are you sure that your sisters who agree with abortion are willing to discuss that any abortions shouldn't be allowed-or do you really believe that free birth control and education will really reduce abortion by a large amount-because I don't.

There are two ways to reduce abortion - to not allow some or to reduce demand. Quite a few years ago the State of Alaska put into place a new program of State health insurance called Denali KidCare which covered pregnant women and poor children. In the next 12 months the abortion rate in the State dropped by ONE-THIRD. Women had been having abortions because they were CHEAPER than paying for an obstetrician and hospital delivery. No woman should ever have to choose abortion because she can't afford to have a baby.

HeyConservativeNick!

Here is a quote from a woman like the ones dr. GT helped.

--------On November 11, 2005, I elected to have [a] CVS test. . . . Then, the test results came in. . . . We knew chromosome 14 was incompatible with life, and chromosome 22 could mean Cat Eye Syndrome. Both my husband and I wanted the baby very much, and neither one of us was willing to terminate the pregnancy on a “maybe.” . . .
I had the amnio on 12/26/05, and the results came in on Jan. 13, 2006. It confirmed without doubt – she had Cat Eye Syndrome tetrasomy in every cell of her body. The last 3 sonograms showed . . . our baby’s kidneys were beginning to malfunction. . . .We made this decision because we loved our daughter so much. We didn’t want her to suffer the definite and the untold problems she was sure to endure, if she even made it. We made the best decision we could with the information we had. We fought for her. We wanted her. But we didn’t want to condem[n] her to [a] life of agony. -------------------------------

Few things in life is as simple as rushseanbill-o would like you to think.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 07:52 PM on 06/09/2009

What had you decide to do the testing for cats eye syndrome? Is there this syndrome in your family or husbands? Some information shows this to be familial. You were taking a chance on perhaps this baby lucked out and didn't have cats eye? The best way to prevent inherited chromosomal abnormalities is to not have natural children, as even if there isn't an obvious appearance to cats eye the chromosomes don't change, this abnormality continues on down the "line". Just wondering.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:48 PM on 06/09/2009

HeyFank6007, this syndrome is familial, meaning that it is inherited through the parents, one or both. There are varying degrees in severity of this syndrome, but me thinks the parents were hoping this didn't show up, and the end result sounds like one that may have been planned should this child have this syndrome. The only way to not have this happen is that the carrier not procreate. Why else would you be tested for cat's eye unless it runs in the family?

You must not be aware of why many women have abortions. There are many. A lot are medical, many are financial. Until all unadopted children are adopted your moral outrage is hollow.

"It is estimated that about 15 to 20% of known pregnancies will end in miscarriage. This statistic is often received with surprise and shock, equally because of its high prevalence as well as how little it is acknowledged and talked about openly."
http://www.birth.com.au/Miscarriage/About-miscarriage-reasons.aspx
What does this statistic say about what God thinks about the unborn? The Bible says in Ezekiel {37:5} Thus saith the Lord GOD unto
these bones; Behold, I will cause breath to enter into you,
and ye shall live:

We are not alive until we breath, or in today's modern medical reality, life could be considered to be when we are viable outside the womb. Your rush to condemn those that are trying to make the best of life is extremely unforgiving.

When was the last time an abortion clinic was protested against in a poor urban neighborhood?

BTW, women also received ob/gyn care including pre-natal care and pap tests at this clinic. So you'll likely see more ovarian and cervical cancer and fewer healthy births in this region as well. So go celebrate that too--this also is on your hands.

Making abortions illegal would be more effective
**********************
Making abortion illegal would not reduce the overall number of abortions. But it would INCREASE the number of dead women(with their fetuses) through botched illegal procedures.

It was a national tragedy, the number of young and poor women dying for the simple reason that they had no say over what happens to their bodies. Also even when many women survived the back alley abortion, many were scarred, making it impossible for them to ever conceive again.

Apparently the aim is just to have babies, irregardless of the consequences. There is an epidemic of children waiting for adoption, yet religious fanatics demand that their interpretation of when life begins be sacrosanct and add to the already overwhelming problem.

I'm not a great writer, but some of the GOPers and Republicans that won't acknowledge Tiller's assassination as terrorism bugs the hell out of me. The Christian terrorist that killed Dr. Tiller couldn't get what he wanted politically (end to abortion) so he killed an abortion provider. Now the clinic will close and future abortion providers (providing a legal service by the way) may not open another clinic in the area. Thus their political agenda is achieved, at least locally.

Now the Muslim terrorist that killed the recruiter couldn't get what he wanted(a worldwide caliphate and/or revenge against soldiers in Iraq) so he kills some unarmed recruiters.

The difference that GOPers don't understand is that Dr. Tiller, like the recruiters, were killed not in a jealous rage, a drug deal gone bad, a robbery or any other criminal act. No, they were assassinated in order to send a political message and/or to elicit political change outside the correct and just channels.

Go to http://www.history.navy.mil/library/guides/terrorism.htm as to what constitutes terrorism
"the United States Code, Section 2656f(d). That statute contains the following definitions:
The term "terrorism" means premeditated, politically motivated violence perpetrated against noncombatant (1) targets by subnational groups or clandestine agents, usually intended to influence an audience.
(1) For purposes of this definition, the term "noncombatant" is interpreted to include, in addition to civilians, military personnel who at the time of the incident are unarmed and/or not on duty.

Plain and simple - using violence and intimidation to achieve religious and/or political aims is the textbook definition of terrorism.

the domestic terrorists of the right must be so proud. they won a huge victory here. once again, they claim to be 'pro-life" as they advocate for a human being (father, husband, and son) to be murdered in his place of worship.

they should all be arrested for inciting domestic violence and attempting to change the law via murder, violence, and terrorism.

shame on the religious right.
