House Democrats are insisting on hearings before they even consider signing onto the Senate's move to suppress detainee photographs, House Financial Services Committee chair Barney Frank (D-Mass.) said Monday night.

The Lieberman-Graham amendment, which would empower the Pentagon to block the photos for up to three years without review, has sharply curtailed House support for the congressional war supplemental, as has a $108 billion line of credit for the International Monetary Fund. The Huffington Post confirmed Monday night that Lieberman-Graham had been removed from the bill in conference. Antiwar Democrats who oppose the IMF funding can compromise on that issue, Frank said, but Lieberman-Graham, which would supersede the Freedom of Information Act, is different.

"I believe it would be possible to get people to switch. I'll switch, others will switch. But not if that FOIA thing is in there," he said. "This is a bill that nobody's had a chance to debate."

The detainee photos bill sailed through the Senate appropriations process with a simple voice vote just before the Memorial Day recess. Frank deemed hypocritical those Senate Republicans who complain that the Democratic majority has flouted typical approval processes.

"I'd like to hear the case why they think it's a problem, I'd like to hear from some opponents," he said regarding the potential release of detainee photos. "This has got nothing to do with the Appropriations budget. The IMF does. The IMF's spending. Whatever happened to procedural regularity?"

Sens. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said in a joint statement late Monday morning that they would take any steps possible to pass the detainee photos bill, and Graham said Monday night that he and his fellow senator remain committed to that scorched-earth policy.

"People can't believe that this is a reality, a possible reality that the detainee photos amendment will be taken out of the bill," Graham said, shortly before The Huffington Post confirmed that it was. He and Lieberman are not just open, but determined to vote against the war supplemental without the photos amendment, he said, "and I think we'll carry a lot of people with us."

Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) said he agrees with Graham's contention that the photo bill has broad support in the Senate, and that he would be willing to keep voting with Graham and Lieberman until the photo bill becomes law. He did, however, add that he supports the IMF funding and will weigh those priorities closely. "Let's just see what kind of support there is before we make those decisions," Nelson said.

"To me, it's a life and death bill," Graham said, after confirming that a filibuster is on the table. He said the White House has not only been supportive, but hands-on in the crafting of the FOIA exemption. "They had us write the language," he said. "They've been very, very helpful."

News Flash. All th.ose who are pushing for the prosecution of George W Bush for War Crimes better not hold your breath. George Bush never did anything illegal. The invasion of Afghanistan had international support and Iraq can be justified on several different grounds, the least of which is the UN resolution passed and the end of the first Gulf War as well as the blessing from Congress. You happen to be a small majority on the far left, representing about 5% of the country. The majority of the country wants to move on. You guys have an obsession with everything Bush. Joe Liebermann is looking out for our troops while you all are consumed with the past. Senator Liebermann wants to prevent American deaths, what a novel idea. Stop with the "prosecute Bush and Cheney" talk. ITS NEVER GOING TO HAPPEN

Anybody who wants these photos to be released ought to be ashamed of themselves. Even Barack Obama said that these photos will further anti-American sentiment throughout the Middle East and furthermore, we will not gain any knowledge that we don't already have. Generals on the ground in Iraq and Afghanistan said that the release of these photos will most certainly result in the deaths of American soldiers. The far left in this country have gone mad. They actually WANT AMERICAN SOLDIERS TO DIE. They have conspired against "Bush's war" from day one. John Murtha called our troops "cold blooded murderers" (that was before they were cleared of all charges in court). John Murtha, Nancy Pelosi and the ACLU want our troops to die and America to lose in both Iraq and Afghanistan. Why? Because if America wins these wars and a stable Iraq and Afghanistan emerge then they will have been spouting nothing but lies and hate for our country for the last 8 years. Don't be fooled, they want Americans to die and they want us to lose these wars. Why else would they push for the release of photos that will directly lead to American deaths.

HUGE issue being ignored is the fact that Bills need not have a "classification and consistency."
A bill can be submitted that basically says:
"This bill shall provide $X-million for a school in Kentucky, and $1-billion for testing the effects of rum on French-Canadian descendants in Santa Clara County, California and water pistols are now considered WMD's."

They can throw any unrelated junk in a bill and then the WHOLE BILL passes or fails based on fragments and priorities. This is NOT RIGHT. It is a huge game and it is costing money, moral integrity and faith in government. When will this stop? The so-called "line-item veto" is only a half-A$$ measure.
Why does the population tolerate this?

If the 15% of us (which is 30% of his base) who are truly liberal turn our backs on Obama now he would take action. He can't make it without us. His entire agenda would be flat on it's face if he lost even 15% of us. I know this sounds dangerous in its potential effect, but understand that Obama is responding to pressures from the right wing because their is so little counter pressure from his own support. He is protecting Bush from prosecution because of threats from right wing nuts like Lieberman. He is already compromising health coverage because of pressure from the insurance industry. If we DON'T threaten to remove support he will continue until there is nothing left to fight for. These debates are fleeting. Timing is everything. Pressuring Obama works. If it works for the right wing and it won't for us, we have already lost anyway. Call the white house everyday. Call your senators and let them know you will work against their re-election if they don't demand accountability. But most importantly, write your best, short and punctual letter to the editor to the nearest large city newspaper. If they don't print the first one, send another. They reach an audience that isn't hanging out on the Huffington Post and the politicians know it well. If letters creep in that reflect lost democratic support over this issue they will respond. It works.

Thank you for these great suggestions! If we all work together, we can get justice. The MSM itself said the only reason we haven't gotten it yet is there's no "political will," so let's make there be one!

The only thing I would add is to make sure everyone also include AG Eric Holder directly in their advocacy, because it is truly in his hands to act on this. Even if the president wanted to, he couldn't move forward without the action of the Attorney General, so it's most important that we convince him this is the biggest crime on his list, and he should deal with it first.

You are right. And, (if) after they DO respond and take action on this it would be important to immediately jump back in. Public visible declarations of support. So that they see responding had the dividend of support.

The “Detainee Photographic Records Protection Act of 2009″ amendment allows the president to legally ignore any court-mandated Freedom of Information Act release of “any photograph that was taken between September 11, 2001 and January 22, 2009 relating to the treatment of individuals engaged, captured, or detained after September 11, 2001, by the Armed Forces of the United States in operations outside of the United States.”

WTF!?!

From 9/11/01 to 1/22/09 ???????

Now I really want to see those photographs and the dates they were taken.

The psych profile tells you exactly what is in them, as do accounts from people who have seen them.

Homo-erotic torture, torture rapes, torture mur.ders, and torture rape kiddie porn. Now in a normal criminal case photos of this nature are no released to the public, but prosecutors fight hard, and nearly always win, in making sure the jury gets to see them.

As big a collective hard-on as the right supposedly has over ANYTHING to do with kids, you would THINK they would want some JUSTICE for the suspected perps in the photos...we have all heard that there are photos of women, men and CHILDREN BEING RAPED. So where is their outrage NOW?? As far as Liberman goes, does this REALLY suprise anybody??

This is an interesting development. Lieberman is doing what he always does, siding with the republicans. You know they say that the Leopard doesn't change his spots, so we shouldn't be surprised at this. Ironically, this is probably one case where Obama is happy about Lieberman's lack of loyalty to the democrats. Obama doesn't want the photographs released either. Isn't there a saying that goes something like "Politics makes strange bedfellows."

Why did not Nixon think of this?

"It shall not be a crime for a Republican Incumbent to order the burglarizing of the opposition's national HQ"?

Simple as that!

Nixon brought Cheney and Rumsfeld to Washington. Cheney's goal in office was to improve on Nixon's ability to commit crimes, and get away with it this time.

Too bad Nixon didn't think of saying that revealing the Watergate crimes would cause somebody to kill American troops. What a useful all-purpose excuse for covering up evil they have there.

Then, it was no photos of the flag-draped coffins. Now, it's no photos of war torture.

It would be awful if Americans were made aware of the ugly reality of war. They might get busy and try to stop it! Republicans like Graham and Lieberman couldn't have that.

Put a uniform on him... And this is how Republicans say they "protected" us.

Wait until these perps come back and move into American neighborhoods... Serial torture sexcriminals may slow down, but they rarely stop completely on their own.

Republicans are protecting, and covering up for them.

These are great links but I don't think this approach is going to help raising awareness for prosecution, because that's asking people to accept too much at once.

Just let's focus on the fact that children were even IN these prisons in the first place, before we lay down speculations on the motives for putting them there. In the United States we've always held it self-evident that if we arrest parents with children in the house, child services officers come and take the children to a safe, healthy environment to await the return of their parents.

Instead, apparently because these children were brown, they were swept up with their parents and kept in the prisons with them! Lay down the links on that and let it sink in for people, and they'll come to these darker realizations on their own, that something like that doesn't happen by oversight, it takes a twisted mind to order it.

We already know the GOP exploits children in America...

And as far as law enforcement proceedures, pedo-strip search Alito set the policy for young American girls years ago. Get them isolated, and get their clothes off.
