It is sad when the debate is about if we got actionable intelligence from waterboarding instead of if it is morally / legally right. If the people in favor of the former administration's policies can steer the debate in that direction, someone will suggest we use it to catch criminals or prevent crimes here in the U.S. That is the sad direction we are headed in.
Isn't the Times of London owned by news corp? Is this going too be on Fox next.
I don't remember the exact quote but Harry Truman said something to the effect that if the president of the US acts in a certain way then that empowers every America to act that same way.
I am positive most redneck sheriff's departments and big city police departments(Chicago comes to mind) have entertained if not acted on the idea of waterboarding.
"If the president acts in a certain way, then that empowers every American to act that same way."
Now see, I try to point that same thing out to my British girlfriend every time she yells at me for leaving stains on her dress, but she just doesn't get it.
Did I not say that it would start being used against CIVILIANS?
I should have laid a large wager in Vegas.
If I had, I'd be rich now.
Enjoy your worldwide police state, idiots.
This is what happens when people don't pour into the streets in opposition.
This is what happens when a government, ANY government, or an administration, attempts to LEGALIZE that which is illegal.
This is what happens when the Dick Cheney's of the world CONTROL the terms of the debate.
No one will ever prevent torture from being used on occasion, not a president nor a congress nor the administration, but once such entitities are permitted to argue that such a practice is legal and OKAY, it is guaranteed that it will be used on ordinary citizens by law enforcement on a whim.
The truth totally sucks.
and wait for the supporters of torture start with
(we didnt think they meant us)
unbeleivable hey
Exactly. The highest standard of law and treatment should be exercised on the most despised and disadvantaged because the lowest standard tends to rise and engulf all.
will start?
you are joking if you think it hasnt already.
dont forget usa legal advice says its legal
"...[S]enior policing officials are most alarmed by the claim that officers ... used the controversial CIA interrogation technique to simulate drowning."
This British article illustrates yet another problem with the Bush camp's use of the technique: Waterboarding is now indelibly associated with this country.
Police in America have used torture- they did this before the 1960s and the Miranda case. There have been incidents since: ever heard of Abner Louima? What's more serious is if it was widely used and tolerated or even if it was implicitly allowed by police command.
Sadly people forget. I remember seeing a PBS program on the supreme court. Talking about how Miranda rights came in to being. Pictures after pictures of prisoners who were beat to a pulp to confess to crimes they didn't commit. Different torture same results.
Obama 's grandfather was tortured by the British in Kenya, so if you're thinking this is a gotcha moment, think again.
This is yet one more example of the corruption that has flourished within the law enforcement communities worldwide since the war on drugs began.
Some people allegedly had brought some Cannabis sativa into Britain. Six cops allegedly set them up, stole some of their property, and then tortured them.
The war on drugs has been a license to steal for the local cops everywhere. This phony war, which is just a pretense with which to steal property from poor and working class people, must end.
Others have commented on the paramilitarization of the local police, to which I might add, if you don't like the idea of being tasered, just wait. The cops are begging for Ak-47s to be in their cars now. Check out some of the cop blogs on the internet.
the biggest dealers of drugs in australia are the police
When waterboarding is outlawed, only outlaws will waterboard.
Actually, we agree on this. Waterboarding is in fact outlawed and those that ordered it are indeed outlaws.
But is it torture if a Brit does it?
Cake or death?
