Think Progress:

Appearing on MSNBC in April, RNC Chairman Michael Steele unveiled a strange metaphor to highlight his view of Republican Party regional inclusiveness. Steele asked Mika Brzezinski, Joe Scarborough and Pat Buchanan to pretend they were all wearing hats that said "GOP" and for the purposes of the demonstration, they all hailed from different parts of the country. Steele then explained:

Michael Steele would be "out of step" with the mainstream even if you slapped on a James Brown record and lit his feet on fire

In remarks further clarifying the hat analogy, Steele specified tin foil.

A start to a good analogy.

But I'd replace "hat" with "hood". Pointy and white of course.

If you stand too close to the cross, be careful not to get soot on your robes.

How does a man come to be so desperate to carry water for people who despise him?

Steele talks about the Republican "hat" in GQ.

GQ: You made the comment at the convention about the sea of white faces. And you got a little bit of heat for that.

Steele: I sure did. Look at the room. Thirty-six black folks in the room? What, are you kidding me? Out of 4,000 people? Come on!"

GQ: Why do you think so few nonwhite Americans support the Republican Party right now?

Steele: "Cause we have offered them nothing! And the impression we"ve created is that we don"t give a damn about them or we just outright don"t like them.

GQ: All right, how much is being a black man gonna help you do that?

Steele: I have no idea. Because I still think there"s a degree of racism that exists out there that you still have to confront. You know, folks see me walk in a room, they don"t see the chairman of the Republican Party, they see a black man just walked into the room.

GQ: Well, would you have this job if you were white?

Steele: "would I have this job if I were white? [long pause] The answer to that is I don"t know. I don"t know. That"s a very good question. And it says a lot about, I think, where the party is right now that I can"t answer it."

It's like one of those paper birthday hat cones that are given out freely at a child's birthday party, right, Mr. Steele?...Like the ones that have an elastic band that you position under your chin so that they don't fall off, right? Is that what you mean, Mr. Steele? :)

Steele can only handle a hat. He couldn't find his way out of a tent with a map, flashlight, and a GPS system.
