The Hollywood Reporter: SHOWBIZ 411:

But the real buzz on Prince is that his much reported hip problems of the past have now turned into need for a double hip replacement.

Unfortunately, thanks to his practice as a Jeohvah's Witness, Prince still refuses surgery. JW's don't believe in blood transfusions.

A close relative of mine just had hip replacement, and the surgery and follow-up is so much more advanced now.

Isn't Michael Jackson also a Jehovah's Witness? Hasn't he had a number of surgeries? (Not being glib--just wondering)
The mis-information in the article makes me leery, and why are we seeing this in HuffPo? About as journalistically ethical and worthwhile as tweets.

In the lowest moment of my life so far, I googled this. I'm awash in self-loathing as a result. But apparently, he USED to be a JW - 20 years ago? Then some Kabbalah, & now Islam. Maybe. I didn't google far, because self-recriminations kicked in.

I am also A Jehovah"s Witness. I believe that many people are misinformed about what, and why we do certain things. We do not store our blood, because despite what hospitals say there could always be a mistake, and you might receive another persons blood. Our way of living as witnesses ,is Bible based , and the Bible says do not give or take blood! However there are volume expanders that can be given to the patient instead. I have had successful major surgery twice using this method. Whatever Prince's reasons are they are finally his own. I hope he resolves the situation because "popping" pain pills are really not a solution! But I have also learned that so much or what you read about people in the public eye, is not even true!

" the Bible says do not give or take blood! " - Could you please point me to the quote that says 'dont give'bood' ? thanks. Where it says ‘don’t take’, it probably means don’t kill.

The ancient Jews were warned not to EAT blood. Most people interpret the passage he mentions in this context . . . that it means not to eat the blood. Kosher meat preparation drains the blood from an animal.

Just curious - when in the days of the bible were there blood transfusions????

I'm not sure there's much point to bringing in a logical question here. I don't know much about the JW's, but I can't help thinking they, too, believe such things as dinosaur pets & a 6000 year old earth. If I'm selling them short for lack of more googling - eh. Consider it revenge for pestering me & leaving those godawful magazines.

There's probably been blood transfusions since slightly after men learned to have battles.

But they probably had no idea about blood types, so unless they figured out by trial and error who were the universal donors (the ones with O-negative), they probably had some success and some failure. So no wonder the Bible says not to -- it is full of semi-informed advice.

In addition to using blood, I recall hearing that the Romans in the time of, er, whenever Romans had that empire thingee going on, they transfused water as well, with sugar mixed in.

"We do not store our blood, because despite what hospitals say there could always be a mistake".

What happened to FAITH?!!!!

You can walk out your front door and get killed or die naturally, but you walk-out on FAITH that God will grant you the day!!! Same thing with storing your own blood.

If that is in the Bible it's probably talking about drinking or eating blood, not blood transfusions. They didn't even have blood transfusions during the bible days....so what are you talking about.
See this is the problem when people are more into religion/rules than spirituality and having a real relationship with God. You should be concerned with putting out good energy into this world..not adhering to a set of old rules that aren't even applicable anymore.

Sounds like he needs surgery to remove his head from his a$$. He's a genius when it comes to music, but it seems to stop there.

When his pain reaches critical mass, he will discover that his religion will accommodate surgery. And yes, he could benefit from an a$$hatectomy.

JWs can store their own blood in advance of any major surgeries. Hospital blood banks do this all the time. The author of this article is not well informed. In Princes case if the hip deteriotates enough he'll get the surgery, or be pushed in wheel chair for the rest of his days.

Unknown: so how to JWs feel about the overuse of perscription pain killers which he must certainly be engaged in if it's gotten to the point of requiring a hip replacement?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:25 PM on 06/09/2009

to be honest I have no idea, what Prince is using or not using. The author of the article was making a huge assumption without being remotely informed.

As we've seen, God approves of massive pain-killers. Just not doing something sensible to maintain your own life. Sometimes, I think God fails a bit in the logic dept.

How come faith healing never works on anything that isn't know to get better on it's own anyway... Has anyone ever spontaneously regrown a limb...or a hip joint.???

I don't think this is about religion as the author ASSUMES. This is more about Prince's ego and self-image. He's been an icon for so long with many abilities, such surgery can ruin one's notion of physical prowess. Athletes understand this. Prince is no different.

Well, I am a woman and I could have told him dancing in 3 inch heels all your life will definitely blow out your hips, not to mention the fact that he really bow-legged, which doesn't help.

Walking around in a walker with two bad hips aint exactly a sign of physical prowess so he better get to it.

Besides, Price has never really been about male standards of masculinity- don’t forget he wears pumps.

What beliefs? When he shows up on stage with his a*s hanging out, I'm sure his religion doesn't condone that. When he has half-naked women gyrating all around him, I'm sure his religion doesn't condone that. I heard Serena Williams make an equally assinine statement about why she doesn't vote.....we don't participate in government, it's against my religion. Your religion also frowns on premarital sex, yet that didn't stop you.

when a religion limits your ability to get needed medical it's absolutely ridiculous, maybe Jehovah will make his hips better

It seems if Prince can wear a$$less pants, he can undergo surgeries to end his pain and make him more functional.

Besides, it's cool being bionic. My hip implants make me bionic, but I try not to feel more superior than others :-)

Actually, the article is wrong. Many Jehovahs Witnesses have successful hip replacement surgery. This procedure does not require a blood transfusion.

If you read the article closely....the author ASSUMES Prince will not have the surgery due to his faith. And he does so without any proof of that assumption.

If Prince chooses not to have the surgery---it is not because of the blood issue.

actually it used to be true that hip replacements required HUGE amounts of blood. But they can now be done in a way that is minimlly invasive and require transfusions much less commonly. But still occasionally.

He should find a good orthopedic surgeon doing the minimally invasive surgery.

I got news for his royal purpleness...when the pain reaches a certain point, he'll be using a high speed limo to get those replacements. Our mother refused to do it until the bones were rubbing together and she couldn't even sleep or think. A month later she couldn't believe she had refused the surgery. Walks great now and no pain.

So we'll see. And as far as blood transfusions, he can use his own by stocking up now.

As an ex-JW....it is not true to say that is is refusing surgery because of blood transfusions. Surgery's happen all the time without blood and quite honestly a lot of surgeries, you don't even need a blood transfusion.

Being a JW you are allowed to seek medical care, however they do not believe in blood transfusions. They are not even supposed to use their own blood, if one stored it...once it leaves the body, it's done.

I'm not a fan of JW-land- but I wish that the news would get their facts straight before blaming the wackiness of Prince = him being a Jehovah's Witness.

Fascinating and to be honest pretty danged dumb of the JW people not to even use your own blood. BUT their belief.
