Conan Goofs, Cracks Joke About Obama Event That Hasn't Happened Yet (VIDEO)

Conan O'Brien is only in his second week hosting the Tonight Show and he's already getting ahead of himself.

On Tuesday's show, O'Brien cracked the following joke: "Earlier today, President Obama spoke at a town hall meeting in Green Bay Wisconsin. Half of the Wisconsin crowd had never seen an African-American and the other half had never seen a skinny person."

Just one problem: President Obama won't be in Green Bay until Thursday.

Reporting on the joke mix-up, the LA Times noted, "Minutes before the show's airtime in the East tonight, the show's LA writers, asked for comment, were scrambling to determine what if anything to do. Clipping out the snafu is one possibility. Watch and see how they handle it."

the joke obviously didn't need the actual event to have taken place. this is so common in late-night talk shows, why is this newsworthy. especially considering they tape in the afternoon and many times they talk about what happened 'earlier that night', most stuff like this your average person doesn't notice.
the only difference here is that they got the day wrong and people noticed.

Now, the hard work starts: they have to write a better joke, making fun of the original mistake, and they have to air it tonight.

... and they'll do it. And it'll be wildly, crazy-funny.

We should be starting a betting pool, on how it plays out. Will Andy insist on vetting the jokes, to make sure that they are timely? Will they have the writers-on-staff, in a dungeon being whipped? Will Conan do the monologue in mime, so that he doesn't say anything that would upset the time stream? Will they invent a time-travel device and deliver yesterday's jokes, today?

I betcha. They cannot help, but use such a silly and fun situation for every bit of comedy they can.

Not only does NBC try to steer the news, on their NBC News, they try to steer the news in their funny section network comics section. Rather than reacting to a news story, they are already thinking about how to craft the news before it even takes place. Where do they think they are, in Disneyland?

The writer's of the Tonight show messed up by making a joke about an event that hasn't happened yet. They will continue this trend tonight when Conan will tell jokes about going to the gym, kissing a girl, and moving out of his mother's basement.

he of course could have said.. president obama WILL speak at a town hall tomorrow.. but who cares really? didnt impact the joke. good joke. funny how people here think its an obama joke though.. its definitely slamming green bay, not the president.

also it appears that no one that watches tv knows anything about it. you can give craig ferguson the spot, for god's sake, its a different network and he has a contract. also DAVE owns craig's show. ever watch the credits? WORLDWIDE PANTS? duh?
