Diabetic Bret Michaels: I Hold Off Insulin For Better Sex

Bret Michaels has a back-page interview with the July issue of Elle Magazine, which has Gwen Stefani on the cover.

Inside he talks about groupies and life on the road, and finishes saying how he literally risks his life for better sex.

ELLE: You've lived with diabetes since you were a kid. How does the disease affect your sex life?

BM: The only time it will ever affect you in bed is if you have extremely low blood sugar and you go into insulin shock, at which point you won't be standing up, let alone performing sex. However, I will sometimes hold off on the insulin, which will jack my blood sugar level up to the low 200 range. It's like how a prizefighter will want to go into the ring with his blood sugar levels high. It gives you the stamina of a bull. So, yes, sometimes I will endanger my own life to pleasure a woman.

After reading the comments here I am thoroughly disgusted. As a Type I myself, I am not about to judge him on what is best for HIM to do. Everyone's treatment is different.

And for those who aren't, you need to get a little compassion. The fact that he speaks about his disease doesn't mean you get to abuse it. Perhaps you think it's okay to make fun or judge disabled people or those who have epilepsy or autism? Do you tell them the best way to handle their disease?

We need people like him who are willing to talk about their disease without being judged.

It was a really dumb comment. And it concerns me, especially for newly diagnosed diabetics. While I don't think it's fair to scare people, it's not helpfull to anyone to think that a high blood sugar (and on purpose, no less) is not problematic.

They asked him a question, he answered it. Do I take medical advice from celebrities...no. I don't think that young children and newly diagnosed diabetics do either. I do think that many diabetics like to see the different lives that are being lived with diabetes, i.e. swimmers, football players, news casters, etc. I think that is healthy.

And I WILL NOT say that what he is doing is dumb. I don't know him, I don't know his insulin needs and I don't know how quickly he burns sugar.

There should be no problem if he allows his glucose level to reach into the 200's for a little while, as long as his long-term average is below 140. I question his assertion that allowing it to that level improves his performance.

I'm a vascular surgery nurse, and I often deal with patients who think it's "no big deal" to let their blood glucose peak. Sadly, they are usually in for an arterial bypass or an amputation.
It might be hard to read; but it's true.

The people you are seeing are those who have "sustained" high glucose levels. It can happen to those even with good control, but that is not the norm.
