I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Bret Michaels

Bret Michaels has a back-page interview with the July issue of Elle Magazine, which has Gwen Stefani on the cover.

Inside he talks about groupies and life on the road, and finishes saying how he literally risks his life for better sex.

ELLE: You've lived with diabetes since you were a kid. How does the disease affect your sex life?

BM: The only time it will ever affect you in bed is if you have extremely low blood sugar and you go into insulin shock, at which point you won't be standing up, let alone performing sex. However, I will sometimes hold off on the insulin, which will jack my blood sugar level up to the low 200 range. It's like how a prizefighter will want to go into the ring with his blood sugar levels high. It gives you the stamina of a bull. So, yes, sometimes I will endanger my own life to pleasure a woman.

I am not necessarily a fan of Mr. Michaels, but I do love Type 1 diabetics. Mr. Michaels has appeared and given interviews for the Diabetes Forecast Magazine. He is well known in the diabetes community. As non-diabetics you really have no knowledge or right to make ignorant comments regarding how a diabetic manages his/her diabetes. He must be doing something right to have lived this long with Type 1 diabetes and having not experienced any complications.

Well I AM diabetic and I could not agree LESS. I can't see how allowing his glucose levels to get to be 200 would make for better sex. Logic tells me that it would just the opposit since high glucose levels tends to make one tired and lethargic.

I'm a Type I diabetic too and I don't think we as diabetics (or anyone else for that matter) should be judging Michaels' by one brief statement. We all know how it is when other people try to tell us how to care for our disease. We don't know every single thing about him or how quickly he can go low during physical activity.

Every diabetic's symptoms of lows and highs are different. There are many people who have diabetes right now and don't know it. Many of them aren't feeling a thing.

I am glad that he spoke about such a personal topic. I think that it could be very helpful for a lot of people. It helps to erase the stigmatization surrounding people who have this disease. If we are critical of those who are famous or notable, then how could we expect that we be treated in a better light?

I am really amazed that HP will post this hateful gibberish from ignorant posters rather than post a comment that has knowledge and merit.

This is so bogus on so many levels I don't know where to start. First at 200 level, there is only danger of long term complications. The amount of sex that he would have to have complications would be off the charts. Second of course you shouldn't have low blood sugar, it doesn't matter what you are doing. I was originally diagnosed in 1989 and admitted with a sugar level of 1100 - granted if it had continued much longer I would have died, but the story is that after stabilization, I have suffered no serous long term complications. It's probably going to happen but not yet. I am much more afraid of low blood sugar. The last serious incident was at the tapas bar friends took me to. I only drank orange juice and there was not enough carbs in the tapas, so after eating I fell over, and was revived by paramedics.

Lastly, sex does not consume that much energy especially not for the 10 minute average of most guys' repertoire. But let's say Bret is a dynamo and a 60 minute man, he should still be fine having his levels at a safe 150. And if he feels the need stop and have a sandwich. BTW, high blood sugar causes lethargy. Eat too much; you fall asleep.

Here's a link to a calorie consumption counter. Compare the amounts of energy consumed by sex with the amounts for other activities.

I am actually stunned by your post. I am a Type I diabetic and I disagree with you. I have a three year old son who is very active. Sometimes I go low just carrying him, the stroller and groceries up and down the stairs in my apartment building (one flight of stairs). So to say that he couldn't go low, isn't for you to say.

Each person is different.

Just for the record.... pancake syrup wrestling blondes who have bad skin and fake boobs...does not contribute to diabetes.

So Einstein here is willing to risk peripheral vascular disease, neurological complications and possible amputation as a result of uncontrolled diabetes to get some action?

My six years of nursing school to get my N.P. license tells me that this probably isn't the smartest thing to do, fellas. We'll be just as happy with a Hershey bar and some cuddling as opposed to waking up next to a dead guy.

I can't say I agree with his lifestyle. Not the rock and roll type here. But from what I can see, he does take good care of his diabetes. He exercises rigorously which for many diabetes works as well as insulin and has residual advantageous effects. I don't think anyone can tell a diabetic that they don't know how to care for their own diabetes. Honestly, diabetics don't live with it because they have a choice. The consequences of not caring for diabetes is way too severe to ignore and the majority of diabetics take it very seriously. Frankly, non-diabetics couldn't take it for a day voluntarily. Basically when a diabetic is diagnosed they are told "do it or die". Not a great deal of fun.
