I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Here's a great media feud for your Wednesday in June! In one corner, MSNBC's Starbucks-sponsored glee club, Morning Joe, and in the other corner, place-where-the-kids-get-their-news-these-days The Daily Show. See, it goes like this: Jon Stewart, as is his wont, made fun of the recent Morning Joe/Starbucks co-branding. And then Joe Scarborough got mad, because obviously their big show of Starbucks-loving was an over-the-top joke, of epic Del Closian dimensions, and surely there was someone at The Daily Show who could discern this. But Stewart and his writers chose to make sarcastic fun of Morning Joe again. It's almost as if the lesson here is that maybe if you go out of your way to set up jokes for professional comedy writers, they will hand you your ass, with humor!

Anyway, Joe Scarborough was on the air today "speaking out" on this again, because he's angry at Jon Stewart. Or maybe he's not! Maybe this is one big joke, and if you take it seriously, you're the big dumb jerk with no sense of humor! Who knows? There's an art to having it both ways, I guess. And, hey, for all I know, maybe this "feud" is all one big fake out like the Bruno-Eminem gag from the MTV Movie Awards. Maybe everybody on both shows planned for Jon and Joe to be taint-to-face at this very moment, for comedy. I know this makes me want to buy Starbucks coffee like it was going out of style, which it surely is, because of the recession.

Anyway, here's a video of Joe Scarborough calling Jon Stewart a "very, very, angry guy" with a "Napoleonic complex." Because he's short! Like Napoleon! The joke just works on so many levels. Truly, this is an evenly matched battle of wits.

Yeah do some news instead of wasting time trying to pretend to be "cool"

Yeah, Joe trying to play off the selling-out-to-Starbucks issue as a sarcastic joke is like Palin claiming it was a joke when she said she didn't know what a vice president did. Trying to have it both ways, indeed. If you say something stupid, or that deserves ridicule, Jon will make fun of you for it. Retrospectively claiming, “it was a joke” doesn’t fool anyone and it makes you look even worse.

Joe makes things worse for himself by going on about how Jon's an angry guy. From what page of the standard insult-response playbook did he find that? There is nothing to indicate that Jon Stewart is an angry person - that's just a blind, baseless, childish, swing-in-the-dark insult. It reminds me of a debate between Pastor Rick Warren and outspoken non-believer Sam Harris, where Rick claimed that he never met an atheist who wasn't angry - as if "angry" is some tragic, demeaning character flaw. Sam’s cool, level-headed (decidedly non-angry) response: “Well, let me be the first.”

Everyone gets angry sometimes. And one thing Jon gets angry about is dishonest, biased, irresponsible news coverage / reporting. While I’m a little disappointed that Jon didn’t fire back at Joe after the ridiculous Napoleon complex comment, I also respect Jon for not stooping even lower and dragging the whole thing into the mud – although that would have given them something to talk about on Joe’s “stunningly superficial” show.

Saw Stewart's response tonight. Was surprised by its lameness. He must not really have 100 writers working for him.

as far as i'm concerned, if stewart had any type of abnormal psychology it would be a split personality; the first being the amusingly, ascerbic, sarcastic, flippant, genuinely funny guy that makes me laugh as he mocks the world, the second being the no-nonsense, well prepared, speaking truth to power, go for the jugular, straight shooting journalist who-goes-where-others-dare-not-tread. if this indeed is the case, it merits a big ol' shrug from me. why:? because both personalities serve a useful purpose and he's superb in both roles however crazy they may be.
you can't argue with success through honesty.
if scarborough really believes that stewart is nuts, it must both puzzle him and burn his cheese greatly that jon, seemingly without effort, performs as a journalist/interviewer at such a higher level than scarborough himself.
perhaps if scarborough asked nicely, jon might give him a few pointers.

Joe doesn't need to ask anyone, guess you didn't hear him on Hardball this week -- he's going to be President! He's smarter than everyone!

Whatev. Jon's talented, smart, and funny. I'd way rather watch Stewart rant about ANYTHNG rather than watch him at all.

His "show" is a commercial for his book. With an endorsement from Starbucks! Disgusting.

Absolutely correct. Scarborough has lately been running an informercial for his new book and woe be to any guest that contradicts his RNC talking points.

Project much, Starbuck Joe??

I loved the fake "world-weary, whats-this-guys-problem?" affectation too. Keep it up. The Daily Show will OWN YOU. Just like Starbucks does.

Well the Daily Show didn't "own" anyone tonight. His response was feeble.

I thought he responded with precisely the level of seriousness the complaint deserved--that is, not much. And John Oliver's Duke of Wellington was a hoot.

The Daily Show does not revolve around "owning" anything. Remember that Cramer deal? Stewart promised to stick to comedy, Cramer promised to stick to informing people on the stock market. Only one stuck to his word. That being Stewart and Cramer still rehashes it. NBC needs to fire a few guys. Joe and Jim would be perfect at looking for new jobs.

Joe is just angry because Jon and his audience see him for the conservative mole he is. MSNBC should get rid of him.
